Next-Gen PlayStation System Will Launch In 2018, Analyst Predicts

I suppose they will want something to compete with Scorpio, depending on how that will do. I feel that people are going to get sick of trying to upgrade every other year.

This is flat out bs. Sony is trying to kill some of the buzz around Scorpio so they are letting stupid stories like this fly they did the same thing when the Xbox360 came out. The PS4 pro hasn't been out even a year Sony also has the new PS4 slim ,Sony VR ...and now PS5 is coming out ...LMFAO that would highly retarded when games like last of us 2 ,god of war and many other Sony PS4 games won't be out till late 2018 if not late 2019 maybe even 2020

There's absolutely no way I'm going to immediately buy a PS5 when I had just bought myself the PS4 Pro not too long ago, & that was because I haven't owned a PS4 at all.

If there's another system that I'm going to buy in the near future, it's gonna be the Nintendo Switch. I'm already planning to go full PC gaming after PS4 Pro, anyway & not having to deal with anymore Xbox or PlayStation consoles.

Sony will likely reveal the PS5 in 2018, but I think a Fall/Holiday 2019 launch is more likely. I don't think they're too worried about Scorpio as it's basically going to be a more powerful version of the same system they've been beating in sales since 2013. Even IF Scorpio is wildly successful, it's still an Xbox One and as of right now Xbox One is about 30 million behind PS4/PS4 Pro in system sales. The Xbox brand has suffered irreparable damage this generation and just bringing out another, more powerful box (that'll likely cost $500 US) won't be enough for most gamers. They need to seriously step up their exclusive game library for a lot of gamers to take the plunge. I think Sony are aware of this also and aren't going to cut their potential PS4 sales a year short out of any fear of the Scorpio.

At first I thought this was insane but, then I realize that releasing the ps5 in 2018 wouldn't be that crazy, It actually makes sense. Think about it, the Scorpio is coming out later this year and will be the most powerful console on the market. PlayStation could release a counterpart ps4 to the Scorpio but, by then a lot of people would have bought the Scorpio. If they release a beast ps5 (completely ahead of this gen) in 2018 they know it will throw xbox off and impact their sales drastically. It will force xbox to come out with their next gen console themselves and that will take at least 2 years to make. It would put sony ahead in the console wars and be a massive blow to an xbox team that is geared to fix their past mistakes, have a legit chance to be number 1 and go big and next gen(they will take the lessons learned from the early xbox one mistakes and will know that this is their chance to make it right). This would also make sense because they can make a more powerful system to help their VR out and give it a better platform for developers and players. Sony knows players want a new console and see the success Nintendo is having shows how much players want a new console, not all of the players want new consoles but, a good amount do. I personally hope they don't release a ps5 or xbox next until 2020. But considering all of this, It would be in Sony's best interest to go this route, It would guarantee them great sales. All in all 2019 would probably be the best year to release it because it would be 6 years after the ps4 came out and most gamers would want a new console and people who bought the ps4 pro would have it by that time for 3 years and would have got their worth out of it.

2018.... not a chance

If Sony does this next year, I want all Pro buyers to switch over to Scorpio for their main gaming console! Pro being given basically 2 year lifespan as top PS is rip off to ALL Pro buyers! Unreasonable for Sony to expect people to pay 400 for Pro then another 400-500 just 2 years later for another system. That;s dropping a grand just on hardware, nevermind if you've bought into PSVR! And Sony can't be trusted for their PS5 to support PS4 games...

Hence forth, this rumored console shall be code named "trinity"...

Hopefully Sony sticks with the PS4 Pro. I can't really see the need for another system as there really aren't any exclusive built just for the Pro. We haven't really seen what the system is capable of yet. I think the Scorpio will be in the same boat when it comes out. I own PS4 Pro and intend on owning whatever MS calls the Xbox Scorpio when it's released. I can't see either of the two having a short life span when their true potential won't be reached as long as the orginal PS4 and X1 have to be supported aswell. It would be stupid for either to drop their original install base they already have just to promote new hardware. Programmers are finally getting their graphic engines optimized properly for this gen of consoles. It will be awhile before they are ready to leap even farther. It will be interesting to see what developers can really do with both consoles once they get a chance but I think the PS4 and X1 will both be around for awhile.

Seems legit. Sony has to respond to Scorpio. Whether it's with a new console with updated hardware or a serious price drop on the PS4 Pro. Whatever it is, count me in.
