Next GTA code-named Rush, set in LA?

Working off actor resumes, Superannuation spots casting calls for eclectic cast of characters on "interactive project" from Rockstar.

Source: The Twitter feed of expert Internet sleuth Superannuation.

What we heard: Up until recently, the Grand Theft Auto franchise was publisher Take-Two Interactive's main moneymaker. Since then, Take-Two has begun to expand its top-flight portfolio with the likes of Red Dead Redemption and BioShock 2. However, the franchise that continues to command the most attention remains GTA.

Nearly three years removed from the top-rated release of GTAIV, and it's possible that the first tidbits of GTAV info have been puzzled out by Superannuation. The posts began in late February, when the Internet sleuth discovered an actor's resume with a since-deleted reference to motion-capture work on Grand Theft Auto V. This motion-capture find, he said, led him to further investigation into motion-capture casting calls for Rockstar's go-to casting studio Telsey & Company.

GTA may be returning to Los Santos.
GTA may be returning to Los Santos.

"Among the projects listed in the casting call was an 'interactive project' called 'Rush,' which featured characters that fit with the few details I heard about GTA5; outlandish characters, weed, gangsters, & celebrities fit the profile for a contemporary LA-set GTA game," Superannuation tweeted.

The casting call in question, which commenced on December 6, sought actors to do motion capture and voice work for eight "additional principal characters" on the interactive project. The personalities have a decidedly Rockstar feel, with stock characters such as the "annoying, wise cracking, highly successful FBI agent" mixed with absurd personalities such as the "Welsh monk / cult leader / yoga teacher - 50, very lithe, very into exploring your personal tension through gripping massage."

Other characters referenced in the listing include a "weed evangelist"; a "swinger, mellow Californian divorcee" who is "ugly but comfortable with self"; and a "publicist for an actress known as America's newest sweetheart…who just so happens to love animals, orphans, drugs and sex."

Superannuation also secured a direct link between "Rush" and Rockstar Games, again courtesy of a self-promotional actor. On September 9, professional wrestler and aspiring actor Robert Esparza tweeted, "Got body scanned for my role in the video game 'Rush', coming out on Rockstar Games."

Should Rockstar choose to set GTAV on the West Coast, it wouldn't be a first for the franchise. The highly regarded GTA: San Andreas featured Los Angeles and San Francisco-inspired cities, complete with their surrounding boroughs. Of course, it wouldn't be the first time that Rockstar has returned to a locale, as GTAIV and GTAIII both took place on the mean streets of Liberty City, which bears more than a passing resemblance to New York.

The official word: Rockstar had not responded to a request for comment as of press time.

Bogus or Not Bogus?: A very tentative not bogus. What seems clear, at least, is that Rockstar is prepping some project under the name "Rush" and that the project will have an eclectic cast of characters that mesh with the GTA universe. Unfortunately, Take-Two has not even announced GTAV yet, so it may be some time before the industry gets an official look at the title.

Man screw GTAV or Rush or whatever; Rockstar should just do an HD remake of San Andreas with trophies or achievements and full blown multiplayer. And plus if they did make an HD remake; it would have to be priced less than 60 bucks because San Andreas originally was an oldschool game (PS2 & Xbox); so the starting price would probably be 30 bucks. which is good for us. I just don't know why Rockstar doesn't wanna do it because nowadays many game companies made HD Remakes. They were HD remakes of God of War 1 & 2 and all 3 Sly games for PS3 and even those prince of persia of games; hell they're even making an HD remake of Halo 1 & 2 combined called Halo Combat Anniversary. So why the hell they don't make an HD remake of San Andreas?

@danielcanas7 If they called them by their real-life names, then they would have to make it geographically perfect. Otherwise you would hear fan-boys moaning about authenticity and such, if they didn't match it up exactly the same. Plus it's the GTA UNIVERSE, so it's Rockstar's version of the US.

Why do they always chage the cities' names: Los Angeles becomes Los Santos, New York is Liberty City? It bothers me. Don't you think it's annoying?

@ondemande17 thnx bro i agree with you and yes i played SA multiplayer it was amazing. when a new game is released it has to be better than the old one so i hope i'm right. If they're gonna make this game like sanandrease its gonna be cool but my point of view is that if GTA V was in a new country with a better story and the same features both of us mentioned its gonna be a big hit world wide, i mean who can imagine that in GTA V you can fully tune your car this would be amazing. I have always loved GTA games and i hope GTA V is better than GTA IV.

@Badboy2008s totally agree mate, I mean, what are you possibly can do with GTA IV once you finished the story? Sure, the internet cafe and the interactive mobile phone is interesting, but I find SA features a lot more fun, your main character is a lot more costumizable, you can improve your skills, you can mod your cars, fight your rival gangs, and lot more and did you by any chance play SA multiplayer on PC ? there's a lot of people who still play this game, not to mention it's a 2005 game GTA SA features + GTA IV physics & graphics = masterpiece (GTA V?)

I hope that the "GTAV" game, when it is release for the PC. Won't have the problems GTAIV did. Even lower end machines should be able to run the game on the lowest settings. That's what made GTAIV for the PC a big failure.

@sabas10 I DO have a midrange-system. It's an i5 with a GTS450, both overclocked, well-cooled and all that. But, I'm being honest, GTAIV just doesn't run very well, even at lower settings. While many other games that aren't older run great. I can't help that it's like this. I never ever run anything extra in the background that I don't need. My drives are always defragmented. It runs by the way, but it's just jerky or "stuttery" a lot of times and it has this weird "top framerate" of about 54 FPS, what's THAT about?... And please, don't talk to me like I'm some GTA-fanboy, because I don't even LIKE San Andreas much... I do like GTAIV a lot though, just too bad the performance is weird. And definitely not a 10 for a lot of reasons...

GTA V needs to be in Vice City or the state of San Andreas once more. GTA V- less realistic BS, more fun, content, customization, and every feature from GTA:Vice City, as well as GTA:San Andreas. No need to repeat the mistakes of GTA IV dividing the fans, give the people a better GTA like the last epic GTA, GTA:San Andreas.

I wanna give you my point of view GTA games are amazing i love them all but recently the games are getting boring i mean GTA Sanandrease was the best game ever b/c you could do almost anything in this game. GTAIV was good but it had the lack of some things like driving planes, trains, you cant even buy new houses and you don't have a garage come on this is not like GTA producers they used to be better. You cant modify your vehicle anymore i mean the only reason i loved sanandrease b/c i could tune my cars almost like need for speed and thats amazing and i'm pretty sure that every1 likes it this way and please can you put a few things like tuning your engine and other car parts i swear to you if you do it like this almost everyperson is gonna buy it. And please try not to do it in the same location as your old games try to find a bigger and more beautiful country. LA is great i like it there but when you do it in other beautiful countries ppl will want to buy this game. one last thing can any1 tell me when whats the GTAV release date and thnx.

why not a gta game based in the uk again? unlike the 60s version from gta2 but an up to date version with the english, welsh irish and scots fighting it out over the normal type gta stories. i just think why does a game need to be based in america all or most of the time? it would work in plenty other countrys!

@DamageIncM GTAIV is known about it's unstable performances on the PC. It works for many as a charm, for others as a pretty hard task, and for others it runs like crap. I can tell you that if you cant run this, you do not have a midrange system ór there may be something wrong during installation. What I do know is that disabling graphics-control programs and closing not-needed tasks always helps. Except some bugs GTA IV works very smooth if your PC can run it. And believe me, it isnt hard. There are no issues on the consoles, except a few glitches wich actually sometimes are positive. So now it isnt the creator's task to make sure you can run their product after their product is completely finished. And Rockstar really did patch, improve and support this game. Its done now and when you cant run it, go back to SA and cry about why you bought it.

@sabas10 What the F?! Use the interwebz and find out that GTAIV is know to be a terrible port. I might have a midrange system, but I just got this thing and it's CURRENT technology, AFTER the time GTAIV was a new release. I have a PS3, but I want to play this game on the PC. Besides, the performance cripples at times on the console-versions I've seen in GameSpots own videos. As far as I've seen, apparently I have better performance than most PC-gamers claim to have, so perhaps I'm lucky. Still, it doesn't really work that great, definitely not optimized and just NOT good performance-wise. So don't just say I'm complaining because you THINK I would just have a crappy PC, while I'm only looking at the facts. My system, which is a high-midrange system, with technologies after the time the game was released, overclocked, cooled and maintained well, should be able to run this game excellently, but can't because of the game's terrible performance. What can I do about it? Not much except for trying some known tweaks. What can the creators do about it? Put the money they spent on the thing into making it work better perhaps?

The best by far was Vice City. Just needs a few mountains and trees in the background. The missions, the heroes and the OST were in my opinion the very best of the series. San Andreas was too complex for the PS2 and as a result the graphics were really poor. So I'd like a new Vice City with a "Fly the Coop revisited" multiplayer, that would be almost perfect.

I think a Britain based game needs to happen. Both GTA and Driver were invented in Britain. Glasgow, Manchester, Liverpool, London, Belfast would all make great locations. I also think a carribean setting would be good. Imagine a Jamaica based game with tropical weather and being able to explore all the little shacks and villages and jungle, and being able to swim and catch fish in the clear ocean. Only problem is that you would be sick of patwaan, weed references, and dancehall, reggae after about 3 hours.

Just 3 things I want: Customization F*CKING PLANES! (9/11 is a whole decade ago, so please don't censor the game again!) And ofcourse all bad-ass things from SA, such as those FIB's, the Army, tanks, Area 52, etc. I also have a feeling there will be a DLC wich turn Los Santos in the Zombie Apocalypse...Very strong feeling...And I like it.

@DamageIncM What the hell are you talking about? GTAIV was one of the most beautiful and best performing games Ive ever seen. The graphics are also really realistic. Maybe you just have a stack of junk instead of a gamer-PC, but that doesn't mean you can just go negative about a game your PC cant run. Go buy a PS3 or Xbox360, or upgrade your PC properly, and you will see yourself that GTAIV is a real pearl under the games.

Pff, well I just hope the game will look better or at least PERFORM better than GTAIV. I guess it's a bit of a trademark in these games to kinda look "simplistic" with block textures and other things rough around the edges. Sure, there is motion-capture, but, even though this game has great characters, it didn't really show. The motion-capturing came across a lot better in 'Uncharted', where it's just amazing. Plus, in GTAIV it doesn't help that the graphics aren't great. But even if you could see it as a "stylistic approach", the performance proved abominable, for consoles and even on faster PCs. I find this unacceptable because it means the product you bought doesn't function completely and it takes away from the game. Not to mention the "perfect 10" it got here... doesn't make sense at all... but anyway. Next time they should also port the game to PC better. Or even better, just base it on PC and port it to consoles for a change. That would probably make for an actual amazing GTA-game. I was only impressed by GTA2, then it was amazing to see GTAIII become actual 3D, and then also a great progression to Vice City, and there was San Andreas... But the graphics and gameplay became dull soon. GTAIV was an overdue update to the franchise, in graphics, but also many features. Now they have some catching up to do if you ask me. Just seems that technically they halfazz it, as if they don't care. And to think how much money they pumped into IV, makes no sense once again.

GTA 4 was good but i felt like i had nothing to buy with the money you earn. I got a ton of cash but nothing to spend it on but guns and the fat chicks on every street. I feel if they bring everything from san andreas and combine it into GTA 4 then we will have the best one yet.

@ JGMRACING, remember the series L.A. Rush, had absolutley nothing to do with Rockstar or even Take 2...... You can pretty much guarentee Rockstar making the next GTA right now, but we probably won't see it released for another year or 2

@jam3zito I wouldn't be too sure, a lot of games use mo-cap for character models, the reference above is probably more likely for that rather than the facial mo-cap used in L.A.Noire. @gamingfrendly There are no screenshot/videos because this is speculation rather than fact. Until Take-Two announce it we won't see anything. As the rumour is that GTA is returning to an L.A. setting I reckon we may hear something at E3 this June. RDR was great because it was fun to play whereas GTAIV was way too gritty and drab for me. Hopefully they've realised that "fun" is essential to the GTA IP (I like the sound of the "Welsh monk / cult leader / yoga teacher" character lol)

GTA so far hasn't been only about it's mischief and car thieving action. Behind the lines of its fine gameplay lies parody, cold hard truth, and criticism that only works if put in a pseudo-virtual american state. Putting it somewhere else will not work especially with the fact that not many people (the consumer audience) are aware of the issues of other countries while GTA has been focusing on american issues. Remember the ads of rusty brown ring donuts? Cluckin bell? and their political talks on the radio? Those are all arranged in a way to reflect on the american contemporary problems. This is the game franchise that to me, is at its closest to having a political conscience, that is the beauty of GTA.
