Next MMOG no WOW competitor, Diablo III post-Starcraft II

Blizzard CEO Mike Morhaime tells <i>Wired</i> next massively multiplayer project will be so "different" it won't compete with World of Warcraft; VP Rob Pardo says upcoming dungeon-crawler won't hit until after interstellar RTS.

As the dust from last week's BlizzCon 2008 continues to settle, bits of information about Blizzard Entertainment's future plans continue to filter down. In interviews published week, two executives from the massively multiplayer publisher offered tidbits to Wired about what the next few years will hold for the developer-publisher.

No Caption Provided

First up was Rob Pardo, executive vice president of game design of the Irvine, California-based Blizzard. The executive was asked about when the recently revealed role-playing game Diablo III would appear in stores. At BlizzCon, the game was available in playable form to the public for the first time.

"Even though it looks really complete, a lot of the content is just not there," he said referring to the polished gameplay footage touted at the event. "We have a long ways to go to build each of the different acts in the game and put in all the quests and all the different monsters. We have a lot of development ahead of us before it will be something...It will definitely be out after Starcraft II."

Starcraft II's transformation into a trilogy was the big news at BlizzCon 2008. However, lurking in the shadows was Blizzard's mystery massively multiplayer online game, which was first revealed via an official forum post in December 2007. Wired asked another Blizzard luminary, CEO Mike Morhaime, whether the project was not a World of Warcraft sequel, which the company has ruled out in the past.

"It's not going to be a World of Warcraft sequel," the executive reiterated. "It will be different. We're not trying to replace World of Warcraft with this new MMO. We’re trying to create a different massively multiplayer experience, and hopefully, World of Warcraft will still be going strong when that one is released."

So if D3 isn't coming out until after SC2... are we talking about not until both .. uh.. expansions of SC2 are out? So we can expect D3 by when? 2012?

Blizzard already said it will be a new intellectual property, so their next MMO won't be Warcraft, Starcraft or Diablo-based.

SC MMO FPS? That's just silly...there's no way it'll happen. Perhaps they're putting together a whole new game (i.e. not WC, Diablo, or SC related) Whatever they do, they'll take thier time and make it amazing...or scrap it after a few years like they did to SC: Ghost

The problem I see is that Blizzard has already said Diablo 3 has been in the works for four years. I say, take all the time you need to make the greatest game you possibly can. Iterate again and again until it's perfect, and only then release the game. Thing is, that shouldn't take more than four years. Everyone here knows that at some point, Duke Nukem Forever stopped getting better day by day. Was that at the eight-year mark? The six-year mark? Games don't take more than four years to reach perfection, they take more than four years if you're doing something wrong. Don't misunderstand me: Starcraft 2 and Diablo 3 are the two most exciting games I know of and I know they're going to be great in every way. I used to think Blizzard needed every second of the time they asked their fans to wait, but I have seen that it takes far, far less time for other companies to come out with games of fantastic quality, polish, and long-lasting appeal. Often several, in the span of one Blizzard game's development. It's crazy. I've never worried about not living long enough for anything before, except for a brief flash when I thought about how long I'll have to wait for Starcraft 2's Protoss campaign. What will life be like in 2014? We could have real spaceships by then.

As long as the new MMO is a new IP, I'm happy. Warcraft, Starcraft, and Diablo are all fine, but for a developer of Blizzard's pedigree, they really ought to branch out. They've taken too few chances in the last decade, but this could be that big change we've been looking for.

mmo will probably be a mmofps rather than a mmorpg. As far as D3 coming after starcraft 2 that was obvious.

moose3469 there is a pretty simple answer to your question. Have you ever noticed that Blizzard games have like the highest quality that you can find in a game usually? The amount of detail and polish is crazy compaired to other games. Not too mention they usually have little or no bugs are release date. Sure they are there to make a lot of money, but they do it at a slower pace. They aren't EA and force games to be released sooner than they should be leaving room for improvement and patches. Nobody likes to buy a Beta game, yet we are fed beta games all the time now because it has "Next Gen Graphics".

Thats easy moose.. They want to polish the games, to make them the best there is. Or would you like D3 to be released now with 3 classes and a short game-time? I quess not. Pacience brings perfection :d

well... moose, it's because blizzard does something no other game publisher bothers with. They create games that are finished. Games with very few bugs. They are committed to quality... and it really does show. I'm not a WOW playa, but everyone has to admit that it struck a cord like no other mmo ever created (probably ever again). I would suspect that their designers and coders aren't forced by gun point to 'Get it done... NOW!', thus allowing them to be more creative... thus (possibly) producing better product. But who knows.

This just confirms my theory. "It will be different. We're not trying to replace World of Warcraft with this new MMO. We’re trying to create a different massively multiplayer experience, and hopefully World of Warcraft will still be going strong when that one is released." A different kind of MMO, so maybe a MMOFPS, Like Starcraft ghost the MMO. Why else would them make it dissapear for no reason unless they wanted to totally reinvent it.

in short WoW flamers are to avoid this game, along with blizzard fluff. furthermore it will be an online rpg, NOT a MMORPG. this isnt new material blizzard, for those of you fluff out there the last 2 + expansions were all online/offline rpg's (depending on which ones you bought and when). p.s. WoW is a terrible game, scrap it and start over on the franchise okay? its been in the making since war2 and hasnt improved on that much.

@TuramberGS:You don't play MMOs, so how can you claim Warcraft is stuck in a rut? In an MMORPG which is done well, such as WoW, the storytelling level is more immersive than most non-MMO games. Also, one way this MMO might not be a WoW competitor? It was described as a "next-gen" MMO, which might mean it is intended for platform(s) gaming, not PC gaming.

Even if it is nothing like WoW, MMOG's are very time consuming. People will have to make a choice which MMOG they want to play.

@TurambarGS, Is warcraft truly viewed to be in a rut at the moment? I believe WoW and it's coming expansions have plenty to look forward to, it's all new content, updated graphics, new gameplay, it had the ability to evolve and that, in my opinion, is not in a rut :)

i think they ar efooling us ... and i think D3 is at least so advanced as Sc2 but they need to get Sc2 out first then D3 . And they will not get out both games cose they wont make much profit and there cant be 2 games of the year Sc2 will get out this Xmas or early 2009 and D3 i hope early 2010. At least this is how i see things

@ dunnowhathuh It will be released after the three SC2 games. You seem to think that there will be a big time span between each game of the SC2 trilogy, which will not be the case, they will probably be released simultaneously or with very short intervals, D3 will prbl be out a year later i guess

I think what blizzard means by different is to suck all the other mmo gamers to their games. WoW - being a fantasy mmo, im a sci fi fan (yes i played wow and other mmos of fantasy) but that will get people from swg, maybe eve or whatever to blizzard. Or have something totally insane that hasnt even been attemped yet - they got money :P go nuts! see what they can do with imagination and style

@ fookingyip - Yeah, I agree - I don't play MMO's, I don't rate their storytelling ability and I don't like the subscriptions and hence I'd hate for either SC or Diablo to get stuck in their rut like the Warcraft franchise now has. Keep my Diablo how it is, keep my SC as an RTS and I'll be oh-so-happy. Chances of that happening though? Next to nil... my bet is on a SC spin off MMO :(

Finstar: Try raiding Sunwell/Archimonde, and then say it doesn't take skill. :P And besides, an MMORPG is a genre of videogame, so your comment is a little silly. If it were *another* game about Dwarves, Elves, Orcs and Humans, then yes, it'd be unoriginal. But you can't be unoriginal just because you want to make a game that you play online with millions of people.

Yes... "complete." Like in the sense of releasing one game in three different stages kind of "complete."
