Next MMOG no WOW competitor, Diablo III post-Starcraft II

Blizzard CEO Mike Morhaime tells Wired next massively multiplayer project will be so "different" it won't compete with World of Warcraft; VP Rob Pardo says upcoming dungeon-crawler won't hit until after interstellar RTS.

As the dust from last week's BlizzCon 2008 continues to settle, bits of information about Blizzard Entertainment's future plans continue to filter down. In interviews published week, two executives from the massively multiplayer publisher offered tidbits to Wired about what the next few years will hold for the developer-publisher.

No Caption Provided

First up was Rob Pardo, executive vice president of game design of the Irvine, California-based Blizzard. The executive was asked about when the recently revealed role-playing game Diablo III would appear in stores. At BlizzCon, the game was available in playable form to the public for the first time.

"Even though it looks really complete, a lot of the content is just not there," he said referring to the polished gameplay footage touted at the event. "We have a long ways to go to build each of the different acts in the game and put in all the quests and all the different monsters. We have a lot of development ahead of us before it will be something...It will definitely be out after Starcraft II."

Starcraft II's transformation into a trilogy was the big news at BlizzCon 2008. However, lurking in the shadows was Blizzard's mystery massively multiplayer online game, which was first revealed via an official forum post in December 2007. Wired asked another Blizzard luminary, CEO Mike Morhaime, whether the project was not a World of Warcraft sequel, which the company has ruled out in the past.

"It's not going to be a World of Warcraft sequel," the executive reiterated. "It will be different. We're not trying to replace World of Warcraft with this new MMO. We’re trying to create a different massively multiplayer experience, and hopefully, World of Warcraft will still be going strong when that one is released."

I really hope they don't go consoles, I mean, I don't really have anything against console developers/players, but imho every company that made the big jump between PC only and multi-platform, ended up developing for consoles and then porting to PC, and everybody knows what this mean... dumbed down controls and customization, too linear/repetitive gameplay, poor longevity and generally a feel that the game was made for 5 years old child...

Well unless Blizzard is going to make a new IP (which I doubt since they haven't done that in ages... and ages... ) anyone for World of Diablo? Planets of Starcraft? Still Blizzard always impresses, whatever their next MMO is going to be I'm sure its going to be just as amazing.

I seriously doubt it would be a Diablo MMO... why make an RPG based on an RPG? Especially one that will have a recent installment released by that time. I could see a Starcraft MMO with a serious PvP emphasis. Or, god forbid, Blizzard could get a little 'adeventurish' and start a new game line, that'd be nice.

I'm glad Blizzard takes their time to make their games "complete" before shipping out.

heh, warcraft 3 died a gruesome and slow death when wow appeared, hope it won't happen to the original game from which the MMO will rise.

It'll definitely be Diablo series because if its done in Starcraft it'll wipe out battlefield, call of duty and crysis in 1 fell swoop.

I don't play WoW but I was a big Diablo 2 fan and it's great to see a company, even in these tough times, that is still loyal to its consumers. They don't just release games so they can dump a rehashed sequel on you a year or two later. They release well polished games that have tons of replayability and continue to support these games well beyond the release date. I remember playing Diablo 2 for a few years and they've always kept it updated up until the time I quit b/c it was taking up too much of my time. That game was addictive!

"At this point it probably could be anything. I wouldn't be surprised if the game is activision or vivendi IP and they're having blizzard produce it because of the insane buzz it would create. Of course that thinking is me just holding out for a new tribes game of some sort" shows you didnt read the article, let alone know anything about the history of the game. "Blizzard's mystery massively multiplayer game, which was first revealed via an official forum post in December 2007" the development was started a few years ago, LONGGGG before activision took over. and besides, seeing as wow is making close to $1.5 billion per year in subscription fees to wow alone id say that blizzard has a lot of leeway when it comes to being able to do things how they want to do them and on their schedules.

I'm hoping Blizzard goes along the lines of a spacecraft (ex. EvE) approach. That genre of MMO is ripe for the taking.

It will be an entirely new property(universe). Also, considering most of the new job spots they are filling, it's likely that will have a console focus (as well as a pc focus... hopefully)

It's obvious it's going to be a Starcraft MMO. Diablo 3 isn't competition cause it's not an MMO it's simply a role playing game. Sure people may take some time off from playing WOW but probly not enough to actually cancel there accounts to play Diablo 3.

Sorry but that is a dumb comment...regardless of what the nest MMO is by definition it competes. Money and time, any MMO will want the most of those 2-things regardless of what it is you are actually playing.

My guess it will be an MMO based in the Starcraft universe, but instead of creating an avatar you create your planet. Basically a Starcraft MMORTS.

Let's hope they don't ruin Starcraft's story with an MMO like they did to WoW. One franchise is enough.

I hope the new MMO is set somewhere different, like a Steampunk universe. Anything without Elves, Orcs or race.

WoW isn't going anywhere for awhile. Besides, there was a rumor an "Emerald Dream" expansion would be after Lich King awhile back, so its no surprise that they wouldn't make a new "WoW-like" MMO. Something different from Blizzard would be nice for a change, and hopefully they'll put it on consoles. I think Blizz is starting to realize the money involved with console gaming.

No, it just means the next MMO is not a "World of Warcraft 2"... this doesn't prevent them from releasing expansions for WoW. Everquest still got expansions for years after Everquest 2 was released. And WOW is just WAY too popular for that. It's only the 2nd expansion pack.. Blizzard would be throwing cash in the dumpsters of their office by not releasing at least 4 more expansions during the games life.. That helps keep the veterans playing, hence keeps them paying. Same way with any popular MMO!

My main question is whether it will be based on one of their three big games or a completely new IP. 'Cuz if it is something completely different, then I figure Warcraft is out of the question because we have WoW, Diablo is out of the question because D3 is, to me, like NWN which means it is practically self-sustaining and will have a HUGE following. That only leaves SC. Now if that were true that would mean first of all it is not coming for a VERY long time, since first they need to finish the SC2 trilogy I figure. If that were the case, I'm thinking something like maybe a combination of Renegade, the 'scrapped' Ghost and Huxley. If that were the case, I'm intrigued. Hell, either way, I'm intrigued. More news to satiate our rabid hunger please Blizzard XD.
