Next-Gen Xbox - Release Date Rumor, Specs, And Everything Else We Know

Microsoft is cooking up its next piece of hardware, and here's what we know about it.

Microsoft's vision for the future of Xbox goes beyond its own hardware--as the company looks to extend into streaming and mobile--but that doesn't mean Microsoft is abandoning Xbox hardware--far from it. The company has said, time and again, that it aims to offer a range of ways for people to become Xbox customers, and that includes via Xbox consoles.

But what's coming next after the Xbox Series X|S? The future is still fuzzy, but Microsoft has dropped clues and made statements about what's next. In this post, we're rounding up everything we know so far about the next Xbox console.

Keep checking back for more, as we will update this post with new details as they become available.

Next Xbox release date, price speculation

The next Xbox has not yet been announced, so it's too soon to say what it could cost or when it may release. A major leak from the Microsoft vs. FTC court case revealed some of Microsoft's plans for the next Xbox, including a heavy focus on "cloud hybrid" technology, machine learning, and AI. The leak also pointed to a potential 2028 start-date for this next console generation. Microsoft Gaming CEO Phil Spencer responded to the leak and said at least some of the information was out of date.

"We've seen the conversation around old emails and documents. It is hard to see our team's work shared in this way because so much has changed and there's so much to be excited about right now, and in the future. We will share the real plans when we are ready," he wrote.

When this next Xbox is announced, what could it be called? We don't know yet, but Microsoft had talked about how its console platform is known as just "Xbox," and that things like Series X|S denote the specific models underneath that umbrella. Whether or not Microsoft sticks with this for its next console remains to be seen, however.

Most recently, it was reported in February 2025 that plans for the next Xbox had moved past the pitch process and has been approved by management to enter the next stage of development. This doesn't mean any potential new Xbox console would be released anytime soon, however.

Next Xbox potential specs

In February this year, Xbox president Sarah Bond confirmed Microsoft was making new Xbox hardware and went on to make a bold statement about what it could deliver. Bond said this next Xbox, whatever it turns out to be, will offer the "largest technical leap you will have ever seen in a hardware generation." That's a bold claim, for sure. Bond didn't offer anything else, like how Microsoft might achieve this, nor did she provide any timetable for the console's release.

Also this year, Bond said the next Xbox will focus on "power and performance" to create the "biggest leap ever," but again, Bond didn't go any further than those lofty claims.

Next Xbox backwards compatibility

Bond has also discussed how Xbox is ensuring backward compatibility will be a part of its next-gen hardware.

"It's also about the ability to be able to play all of the games. I mean, we have people who've been playing on Xbox for decades and invested thousands and thousands of dollars and hours with us. And [we want to enable them] to take all those games with them into the hardware of the future."

Bond went on to explain that when she became president of Xbox in 2023, one of the first things she did was create a team dedicated to backward compatibility. She then went on to say that the Xbox team is committed to the idea of being able to play their games wherever they are.

"So our long-term commitment to cross-play is part of that and our commitment to cross-progression and cloud saves. So you can pick up on one device and you can play on another is a part of that."

A handheld?

A recent report said the next Xbox could be paired with a new handheld Xbox device, which opens up a lot of intriguing possibilities for where things could go.

According to Windows Central, Microsoft is taking another two-pronged approach to the Xbox hardware market like it did with the Series X and S. The plan is reportedly to have a traditional-style successor to the Series X, as well as a handheld gaming option similar to that of the Steam Deck.

It's currently unclear what this approach would end up looking like, but if the handheld anything like the Steam Deck, players will likely be able to play their digital purchases and bounce between the handheld and console. There likely won't be a separate ecosystem like the 3DS and Wii U or Vita and PS3. There's also the possibility that it could look more like a Switch and have both the console and handheld components work together.

Next Xbox news

Those same leaked documents revealed a trove of insights into what Microsoft may be cooking up for the future, but again, some or all of this information could be out of date. The documents showed that Microsoft was considering switching to an ARM64 CPU, like the Nintendo Switch uses. The leak also revealed that Microsoft is targeting DirectX ray tracing for its next-gen consoles, as well as machine-learning-powered graphical enhancement.

Microsoft seems to be putting a lot of focus on AI and machine learning for its next generation, touting its use for "optimization and acceleration of game performance, operations, and development for players and creators." Microsoft said AI and machine learning could help with things like matchmaking and player-discovery, while AI could also be used for game-testing and to optimize monetization strategies.

Also listed in the leak as a "key innovation" coming with the next generation of consoles from Xbox is an "immersive game and app platform" that will allow anyone to develop their own games--possibly similar to Roblox's development platform. This seems to play into what Xbox executive Sarah Bond said recently about the potential for AI to further enable players also becoming game developers within the Xbox ecosystem.

Microsoft said in the leaked documents that its aim was to develop a "next-generation hybrid game platform" that taps into the "combined power" of local hardware and the cloud. The end result? Microsoft believes this could result in "deeper immersion and entirely new classes of game experiences."

Beyond Xbox

While Microsoft is working on new hardware, it's just one piece of the puzzle for Microsoft as it looks to the future and seeks out ways to find more Xbox customers. Recently, Xbox cloud gaming came to Amazon's Fire Stick devices, and Microsoft launched an ad campaign telling people they don't need to buy an Xbox. Indeed, Microsoft has been saying for years that it kinda doesn't care if you buy an Xbox. Thanks to cloud streaming, the phone in your pocket or the TV in your living room is an Xbox device.

Xbox CFO Tim Stuart said during the Wells Fargo TMT Summit that the goal is to make first-party games and Game Pass available on "every screen that can play games," and this includes rival consoles.

"It's a bit of a change of strategy. Not announcing anything broadly here, but our mission is to bring our first-party experiences [and] our subscription services to every screen that can play games," Stuart said. "That means smart TVs, that means mobile devices, that means what we would have thought of as competitors in the past like PlayStation and Nintendo."

In addition to streaming, Microsoft has discussed plans to launch its own mobile game store. Recently, a landing page on Xbox.com for the mobile store appeared, telling people it is "coming soon." This mobile store for Xbox games could launch in 2024, and given that Microsoft owns juggernauts like Candy Crush and Call of Duty, this could end up being a big deal, though time will tell if that comes to fruition.

A compromise I hope they make: don't enforce complete parity and don't require every game to run natively on the handheld. Instead, allow certain games to only run natively on the big home console, and be cloud streamed to the handheld.

Hopefully the handheld is still fairly capable and allows *most* games to scale to it well, but avoids feeling like it's holding back or handicapping the bigger higher-powered platforms

Does anyone even care at this point? Xbox seems dead and even Sony that are outselling them several times to one are wasting billions upon billions on flops.

It's really weird where it feels like the main two are dead and Nintendo are just off doing their own thing which I personally do not care about either.

This sounds nice and all but without the games who cares? Microsoft got embarrassed this last console cycle and it’s getting worse this current one. And the new Nintendo console isn’t even out yet which will make it even worse. Microsoft’s problem, and it’s been like this for a while, is their exclusivity problem. I can name maybe three exclusives that were worth it and even Starfield had some issues. Gaming is moving more and more to the exclusively streaming direction. So 15 years from now, a disc drive will be obsolete. But I’m glad Microsoft isn’t giving up.

@Viper13579: Obsolete Disc drives is a problem.

I can't comprehend how gamers want to own digital over physical.

Even if you don't want a display shelf for your collectioin

you can't sell, trade, loan out or give away your $70 game(s)..

Im probably gonna go full backwards retro when this day comes.

I have so many games from the entire life span of Xbox from the Original up until Xbox Series X and One. I'm good fam. I can't really afford it anymore anyways. $70 dollars for ONE game? and the consoles are around 500 dollars?? It's not affordable anymore. It's like the Neo Geo area lol

@dominicwow: Agreed. I was so let down by both of them.

Xbox even looks stupid. im looking at it right now & it's a rectangle.

~Sony did nothing with physical backwards is frustrating.

it would print money if they included ps3 or even PS2 chip.

But Sony wants gamers to buy those retro titles again digitally.

i dont.. i already own most of em & have a few hundred ps1,ps2,ps3

games. Would be nice to play em all on 1 console.

My backward sPS3 is & always has been JUNK.

it's been on it's last leg since day 1. i avoid it.

My prediction is the next generation will be Microsoft’s last. I fully believe Microsoft will exit the console market after the next console gets beat by the PS6 and Nintendo’s next console. I see them focusing even more on Game Pass, and once again neglecting the single most important thing about a game console… the games.

@stickemup: YUP! They put no effort at all into seriesX.

The name & design of the console is even generic & lame.

Phil spencer ruined that company.

I always thought they would do better to get that gaming-focused windows ui worked out that's been rumored about for a year or so now. If Xbox just became a tv windows pc box, it wouldnt have to directly compete with ps5, it would have a built in library of games(including Sony ones), and you wouldn't need devs to port your game to a thing but windows pc.

They have been promising this computing on 'the power of the cloud' since Xbox one was announced...

I'm happy to hear there will continue to be new iterations on Xbox consoles, console is my preferred way to play games.

They're easier for kids and non-techies to use and just work when you want to play with as little hassle as possible.

@girlusocrazy: I completely agree with you. However, if Microsoft keeps pushing the mantra "No console required", and sales keep declining year-over-year, their board members and shareholders will start questioning the R&D/manufacturing/shipping costs vs. profits and not feel required to keep producing Xbox hardware.

@Furwings: That's would be a shame. If that happens hopefully Valve could step in and make a console the same way Steam Deck works except with hardware that doesn't have to be concerned with running on a battery.

It ia obvious that consoles as products haven't made money as software has. Hence the move to buy studios instead of focusing on hardware development. I had a few heated exchanges in the past on how this generation of consoles is the worst ever, followed closely by the PS4 pro and Xbox One X.

The focus on an alleged measure of diversity (still US-centric, still from the US, still in English) while neglecting the very concept of inclusion has clouded the minds of journalists and game developers. It is puerile how these groups address social issues without any measure of criticism, factuality or data.

They made of the gaming industry a "platform" to voice "social justice", and in the end, neglected the very core of the industry, which is entertainment.

Lazy productions, repeated themes, and an endless list of poorly written games, joyless and preachy, will lead to a crisis in the industry.

Just as an example: the most lauded game in recent years, Baldur's Gate 3, depicts every character as possibly bisexual (for the sake of "inclusion"?), and romance is reduced to "kill the orcs, I love you". Every character of strong/physical disposition is a woman. Nobody seemed to care (or notice), but try and make a game today with three male warriors and 3 rogue females (wizard, thief, etc). I guess that wouldn't fly.

Same pattern in other games, but I'll leave the comment as is, see the "isms" popping up.

Long live the classics!

@rickxy007: isms in my opinion are not good. A person should not believe in an ism. He should believe in himself. I quote John Lennon: "I don't believe in Beatles. I just believe in me." A good point there. After all, he was The Walrus...

@gamerpie: Nah, wise people buy PS (for exclusives), PC, and Switch (for exclusives). Xbox has been irrelevant for about a decade now. Everything Series S/X is on PC. And everything Xbox One has been able to be emulated (on PC) from near day one since Xbox runs on Windows.

Nowadays you don't even need to buy a Switch. Buy an Asus ROG Ally (or other Windows OS handheld) and you can emulate the Switch as a handheld. The only console worth buying anymore is the PlayStation for it's exclusives and even then, those are now releasing on PC just 12-18 months post-console launch.

i agree Xbox has been sht for about what you said= 10 years.

Consoles are fun for me cause it's simple & on the couch vs my desk.

Wish i could somehow play PC on my bedroom TV.

@gamerpie: Not going to happen as Pandora's box has been opened and will be very hard to close it. The internet and its access have evolved very fast and now they can do things not capable some years back and not saying all is golden but all in all they are moving forward. I am leery of the cloud, but I prefer my data to be kept physically as well.

As someone that owned every Xbox at launch and has been an active XBL Gold/Gamepass member since 2001, this is most definitely my last Xbox. I'm waiting for my Gamepass Ultimate to run out in Sept 2025, then I'm gone (Thank you VPN).

Gaming is DEAD. Besides the grotesque monetization of everything, I can't stand the insane activism devs and journos try to put in their games and articles. If you're lucky enough to find a game that doesn't try to squeeze you, then you have industry folks crying that they hate the very people that actually PAY for games. One of the only industries that demonizes the people they're reliant on to make money. Probably why the market has been rejecting "games for a modern audience" so severely. 2+2 doesn't equal 4 to these people.

I'm sick of the whole industry. They forgot how to make FUN games, and they want to rake you over the coals financially, while calling you a racist. No thanks.

This industry is crashing itself. Hopefully we get something great out of the ashes.

MAKE GAMING GREAT AGAIN!!!

~Vodoo,,,Pick up the 'Mclassic' for $80.

Wife got it for me for birthday as a shocking surprise cause

i forgot about it.. I notice the quality on every console i use it on.

It even works with OSSC lol when i PS2.

@Vodoo: I may have brought my last console, PS and Xbox but I mainly will be keeping Game Pass Ultimate as I use it for PC and I demo off of it. Consoles do not excite these days they are boxed up and mine has nothing to do with changes but with what I mainly use.

give it 5 years, xbox will be Sega. They are on the path, The whole problem with them is management, spensor is a joke and has them falling fast, now to try and stay relavent they buy an extremely expensive company, but even that won't save them. all 1 or 2 of their exclusives are over done and forgotten, gamepass can't make up it's mind on a price, and even the console names are a mess. they would be better off stepping away from.console gaming and keeping some dignity and just being software only.
