Next Xbox to launch in 2013 - Report

New report says Microsoft's next console likely to be revealed at E3 2013, Lionhead already developing Fable Next.

The gap between the launch of Microsoft's original Xbox and the debut of its successor was almost exactly four years. The gap between the company's second and third console launches could end up twice as long.

The monolithic Xbox 360 could stand tall for another couple of years.
The monolithic Xbox 360 could stand tall for another couple of years.

Develop reports that chip manufacturers and software middleware firms expect the next Xbox to be announced at E3 2013, with a launch following in time for the holidays. This would be an announcement-to-launch timeline similar to the Xbox 360, which was revealed just six months before the console hit retail in November 2005.

The report also suggests that Lionhead is already at work on "Fable Next" for the forthcoming console. Various other development houses, including EA and Crytek, have also been rumored to have preliminary development hardware.

These reports follow a recent confirmation that various Microsoft employees are already on the next console team. Several LinkedIn accounts for Microsoft employees listed them as working on the hardware, with Jeff Faulkner pinpointed as creative director on "Xbox Next Gen."

I would like the new system to be reliable, I know Microsoft will make a great system with great software which I will want to play for hours but Im just hoping and I guess the one thing I want from them is for the console to last as long as I do and not 1 month then all of a sudden I get the red ring of death. I have had this hppen to me 9 times on 3 different concoles. I finally had enough and bought a new slim console and havent had ny issues yet.

I think if Microsoft was going to make a new XBOX then what I would like to see in it would be a very good competitor to the PC.

The Processor would need a big boost to six symmetrical cores, each two way SMT-capable and yes the MOBO would need to have interchangeable parts but to what extent? Microsoft would need to have over-extreme user friendly parts for the younger “CHILDREN” Microsoft would not like to have Hackers and would then need to incorporate security system into each and every system for those parts. These parts would also make some gamers “BETTER” than others causing separation between them and raising some very reasonable questions on whether or not to even have upgrades available or to just send the console out with the best parts already with graphic updates over time.I believe that having backwards compatible games with full Xbox live support would be nice but would be hard to incorporate because of the new system software.Have the Xbox fully compatible with Windows 8, and Windows Phone(Andriod/iPhone optional), and be able to access, use, and or send files too, and from, the Xbox’s internal storage (as a home server) but also to use Windows 8 and Phone on the Xbox as the ultimate “PC”. Microsoft would need to have multiple display options available along with 1 Xbox drive and, 1 Blue-Ray/DVD drive. They would need to have full WiFi and Bluetooth capabilities along with bigger HDD of around 1TB with a SSD of 120gb for its quick loads on downloaded games and quiet run time. A Water Cooled system would be ideal but to save money; it probably wouldn’t happen.I believe a grand total of this system would be around $650 to $750. Some people would say it’s cheap some would say it’s expensive... but look at what you would be getting (if this were a true setup)

So this is what I would like to see in a Xbox “720”

Hopefully whatever they do they at least get some DX11-capable hardware in there so that they can actually catch back up to PCs. A lot has happened since DirectX 9.

@GothikaGeist: The lines have blurred game-play and development-wise; with the current gen., consoles for the most part have become budget PCs.

if the games do end up costing more then i would expect double the quality of a 360 game. or i will wait for the price drop to begin

It has had a great run. It went beyond people's expectations in terms of sales, graphics and thirdparty support. Nevertheless its age is now really starting to show. Crysis 2 looks fantastic but most studios won't be able to produce such graphics with specs from 2005. It is definatly time to replace it and I think 8 years is a good run. Close to Sony's promised 10 year run of the PS3 but not too far apart to have a real generation difference.

nope I don't remember paying 700 Euros. I paid for a $399.99 for my XBOX 360 You paid almost $1000 US dollars for a XBOX 360? Considering what PCs were using in 2005 and XBOX 360 still making good looking games did graphics cards advance that much? Unreal 4 doesn't look super impressive atm. XBOX 360 is going to live twice the life span of the XBOX. I have both a good PC and XBOX 360. I still would rather play most games on a console. I use the PC for RTS and MMOS. PC is not the same thing.

Hope this retails at a more realistic price structure given the global economics, remember paying 700euroes for untested 360 hardware on release day for my son, never again.Original xbox outlived 4 360s....now that machine was built to survive a nuclear winter.

I have to stress the fact that consoles will never simply "catch-up" and stay on par with PCs for two reasons. One, consoles are not modular: the tech that comes with a console cannot be interchanged and upgraded (or will it in the next generation? ;) ) Two, PCs ARE modular: as soon as new tech hits store shelves PC owners can immediately upgrade, and since consoles have pretty long lives, the tech in them gets old rather quickly (Video cards for PCs are released almost every other month!), So basically, while consoles catch up to PCs when they are first released, the PC quickly outperforms them with steady technological advancements. So, no, consoles are not blurring the lines of PC and Console gaming; unless they bring in modular consoles that are very user-friendly. Just as a sidenote: I am an Xbox 360 guy.

Likely there will be no backward compatibility, so will we need to keep both egg box £7.20 and £3.60? (sorry, the ronnie sketch of the broken blackberry was too funny)

PC games are not dumb down for consoles? No publisher is going to release a game with top of the line requirements. Why waste the resources if only a small amount of people will be able to play it at high levels, Games are made to be played at a level that most consumers own. XBOX 360 life span will be twice as long as the original XBOX.

Microsoft would probably make an interchangeable parts. Since it's a console, they would try to keep it simple for casual people out there. First they would sell a default next gen xbox. Then people would have a chance of replacing their "XG"(xbox graphic card) using a simple snap button user friendly. Microsoft would then charge 100 dollars more than the preceding XG# : XG1, XG2, XG3, so on

How about the next xbox has better graphics and can plat PC games w.o having to dumb it down for console games? i guess if that's the case, the new xbox would have to come with a Dual Quad processor. but look at the good side. PC isn't regulated by any company like Xbox is. so maybe PC gamers won't have to keep updating a card just to play games. M$ can take care of that through just their upgrades. Personally, i think it would be a good tactic on M$ end to try to get PC gamers to convert to M$ subscribers.

@devastion913 I'm aware of that, hence the lol at the end of my statement. I'm going to be getting the Gears 360 shortly, so it will be new to me. That's all I was saying. Slight jab at humor, although not that good at it I see.

I swear to god if the failure rate is over 30% I'm not even looking at it. I'm a Playstation guy myself, but I do have a certain liking for Xbox. And dammit, RROD is BS. I have a launch PS3 that isn't broken, and a 360 that bricked a week after I bought it. Fanboy or not (I'm not), we can ALL agree that 360 had a wayyy too high failure rate, one that needs to be addressed with the 720

Wow, eight years, that is a lifetime (and then some) for a console or the games industry. My parent's computer is 9 years old and still working, but it's far behind the current technology.

Uhhhh, Really? I mean is there really need for any of this? Are we really at the edge of the knife with this current gen of games? Because last time I checked things are still pretty much at their prime when it comes to graphics and such and hell the PS3's power has still not been fully realised yet. Come on, why?

No RRoD crap this time M$!!! Test your product a little more rigorously this time around. Put it under more extreme conditions! jam some peanut butter in the fans and see how it holds up! ...oh... and please utilize BluRay technology or something as good. That is all.

For me, as long as they: a) don't push Kinect down our throats by forcefully integrating it; b) carry over our XBLive profiles (achievements, etc); c) and make it completely backwards compatible, none of the 'Classics' bs, I'm down for a new Xbox. It'll be nice to get a serious hardware update.

I don't mind adopting a new console, as long as we don't have the same debacle that the 360 did with Xbox titles - being software support only and then having said support dropped so those of us who want to play classic Xbox titles need either repurchase through Live if available or keep an old Xbox around to play them on. I am amazed when I stop and consider how long the 360 has been out, but to be honest I don't feel like it's such a dated and "historic" console. I have a PS3 and a 360, but I rent titles on the 360 if it's not an exclusive...always have, PS3's graphical superiority is so miniscule I can't see it and I personally hate the PS3 controller (The triggers for R2 and L2 IMO are terribly designed and fail to be comfortable like the 360 triggers). Whatever the case, I hope Microsoft takes their time and makes it a true successor and not just a step onto a step stool. Until then I'll keep rockin' my 360 Elite - Slim's eat your heart out!

Hopefully the 360 won't suffer the same fate as the original Xbox when it comes to Live. However, I do understand there will be a time to shut it all down.

It's about time. It's a dying console anyway. Dated hardware and multiple discs can only survive for so long. X360 maxed out it's potential years back. A new XBOX is a good choice.
