NHL 19 Predicts Stanley Cup Winner, And It's A Surprise

EA's prediction has been wrong for a long time, but will it be right this year?

With the 2018-2019 NHL season just about to begin, EA Sports has released the results of its annual simulation of the season within the latest NHL game. The biggest takeaway? The Toronto Maple Leafs will beat the San Jose Sharks to win the 2019 Stanley Cup.

That's a notable prediction given that the Leafs, one of the NHL's original six teams, have not won the Cup since 1967--some 50 years ago. Here are some other notable takeaways from NHL 19's simulation of the upcoming NHL season.

  • Leafs center John Tavares wins the Conn Smythe Trophy, which is the MVP for the playoffs.
  • Erik Karlsson of the Sharks wins his third James Norris Memorial Trophy for the best defenseman.
  • Connor McDavid wins the Hart Memorial Trophy and Art Ross Trophy.
  • The Vegas Golden Knights take home the President's Trophy with 118 points.

EA's annual NHL season uses updated player data and factors in a lot of specifics that you'd expect and hope for such as line combinations, as well as hot streaks and injuries.

The prediction has been wrong for many years in a row now; last year, EA's simulation stated that the Winnipeg Jets would defeat the Boston Bruins in the Stanley Cup Final, but in reality both teams were eliminated in earlier rounds.

NHL 19 launched in September for PS4 and Xbox One, and GameSpot's 8/10 review praised the game's controls, graphics, and presentation.

Winnipeg finished with the 2nd most points at the end of the regular season and were only eliminated in the Western final. So almost getting 1/2 isn't that far off. Don't know what geriatrics ward they pulled Boston out of though.

Toronto hasn’t won since ‘67 so the excitement is high here.

But man, if they did win, the city would shut down. It’d probably be declared a local holiday.

it would shut down. It wouldn't surprise me if they built 500 foot statues of each player and coach on the team as well.

Probably would also start up a new religion. Christianity is getting a bit stale up here and if leafs win we will change our religion to worship the mighty maple leaf.

This is hilarious. I needed this.

I mean, no chance in hell that a Toronto-based sports team will ever win a championship (Canadian Football doesn't count, because NFL master race, duh) but to even think about it is amusing.

No idea what your talking about, the blue jays won the world series twice in a row in the early 90s. Raptors also are a well supported team and who knows what they could do in the future as well.

Only reason leafs didnt win after 1967 is because the owners were just too cheap to spend the money on a winning team. The fanbase is so epic and rabid they could lose over and over yet still fill the rink each night, making spending money kinda pointless.

So, salary caps have been around for a couple decades now, and finally seem to have some decent leadership on both the ownership and coaching. With big money put into the bench and also on the coaching staff now. But its a big uphill battle when you look at it, there's so many teams these days, but the time will come. There could be a perfect storm coming, we gotta wait and see.
