Ni No Kuni 2 Releases on PS4 in 2017, New English Trailer Released

"The light may yet return."

Ni No Kuni 2: Revenant Kingdom will launch for PS4 in 2017, Sony has announced. The announcement was made during the PlayStation Experience press conference, where a trailer was also shown. Check it out above.

Just like the first game, Ni No Kuni 2 is developed by Level-5. Unlike the original however, Studio Ghibli, the company behind acclaimed animated movies My Neighbor Totoro, Princess Mononoke, and Spirited Away, isn't involved.

Now Playing: Ni No Kuni 2 - PSX 2016 Announcement Trailer

Ni No Kuni 2 follows Evan, a boy king who must adventure through a kingdom engulfed in darkness. Evan must prove himself to be a worthy monarch and is joined on his quest by Roland, a visitor from another world. A number of other characters will also tag along for the adventure and the new trailer offers a glimpse at the colorful cast.

The original Ni No Kuni was released for PlayStation 3 in December 2010. It told the story of Oliver who, after the loss of his mother, travels to an alternative world of magic and monsters to seek out his soul mate.

In GameSpot's Ni No Kuni review Kevin Van Ord awarded the title a 9/10, saying it is "a stupendous game because there's so much to do in it, and because all of it is just so good."

He continued: "The hallmark of the greatest RPGs is that you don't want to stop playing them, and Ni No Kuni proudly joins that elite group of games providing such an enticing world that you can't imagine never having visited it. The only problem, of course, is that you may never want to leave."

I was a huge fan of the original Ni No Kuni; it was easily one of the most overlooked and underrated games of 2010. It was totally gorgeous and basically made it feel like you were playing a Studio Ghibli movie. The story was pretty excellent too: great characters, strong lore, engaging and mysterious objectives. Naturally, when I learned of a sequel I got super excited. I'm still pretty stoked, but this article pointed out something that has me just a tad nervous: Studio Ghibli will not be involved in Ni No Kuni 2. I worry that the game will, as a result of losing Studio Ghibli's creative input, end up being a close approximation of the magic created by the original. Batman: Arkham Origins is a solid example of what happens when a studio tries to duplicate the magic of someone else's work. Origins wasn't bad by any stretch, but it certainly wasn't as good as any of the Rocksteady Arkham games, either. I'll withold judgement for now, but my enthusiasm has taken a bit of a dip.

The first one was so enjoyable. I spent so much time trying to catch all the wee buggers.

@Frozone007: IKR! Who was the idiot that wrote this? It would have been understandable if that was wrote by someone in the comment, but someone that is writing for Gamespot!? They even put "after the death of his mother". The whole reason that was important was the promise that he can get his mother back by going to the other world! It was the most moving and heart-wrenching story of loss and finding hope again.

Oh my mom just died so I think I'll go to a magical world to find a girlfriend.....STUPID!

It would seem my ps4 will be getting some use this year. I should turn it on so it can update then. It probably has about 15 since the last time. I need this game in my life.

@Thanatos2k: Technically the original Ni no kuni was. It came out on the Nintendo DS and PS3 in japan. They were obviously very difference versions of the game but both kept the same story and were developed along side each other. Similar to what Square Enix is doing to Dragon Quest XI with the 3DS and PS4 versions.

@bacontophat45:It was not cross platform. They were two different games. Sonic Boom: Rise of Lyric and Sonic Boom: Shattered Crystal are not a multiplatform game because they're both called Sonic Boom - they're two different games like this was two different games.

@Thanatos2k: I mean yes and no. The PS3 version was more like a remake (that was oddly developed at the same time) then a different game. The gamplay is quite different but they both used the same script but with some alterations made to PS3 version.

Even wikipedia calls the PS3 version an "enhanced version".

Wild Arms and Wild Arms Alter Code F are not the same game multiplatform, even though they have the exact same story!

@Thanatos2k: Like I said before it's basically a remake that was just oddly developed the same time. They are the same story by the same developer just redesigned and extra content added.

Does it really matter if you don't consider it the same game though? They have already put a IP of the same series, that have been developed at the same time on a system by both companies. Why is it odd to think they may be doing it again? Level-5 has already said they plan to make games for the Switch and no company is currently allowed to talk about what is currently in development for the system, so it is very possible it is in development but they simply can't talk about it.

@bacontophat45: "Does it really matter if you don't consider it the same game though?"

Yes, because we were talking about the likelihood of Level 5 releasing a multiplatform console game. It is in fact core to the discussion you inserted yourself into.

"Level-5 has already said they plan to make games for the Switch"

Yeah, probably the same stuff they made for Nintendo handhelds now - Professor Layton games and unlocalized soccer RPGs.

@Thanatos2k: It stopped becoming a discussion about Level-5 releasing multi-platforms a while ago. The series is multi-platform regardless if you consider them the same game or not.

You just got caught up in the technicality on if a remake is considered the same game. Clearly you don't consider them the same game.

Like I said before the series is already on both Sony and Nintendo consoles, why would it be odd for it to continue that way?

@bacontophat45: "It stopped becoming a discussion about Level-5 releasing multi-platforms a while ago"

Oh, I wasn't aware you had randomly changed the topic. I know why you desperately want to though.

The question was whether this game (THIS game) is coming to the Switch. Level 5's track record of not releasing multiplatform console games speaks for itself, because the Ni no Kuni games were different games - Level 5 has yet to release a multiplatform console game, and so it's extremely unlikely they'll suddenly start now.

That's on topic. What are you babbling about again?

"Like I said before the series is already on both Sony and Nintendo consoles"

I'm not aware of the game releasing on the Wii or Wii U. Surely you're not calling the DS a console?

@Thanatos2k: *facepalm* this is the most idiotic conversation I've had in a while. You can have your victory of talking in circles and pointless overly specific technicalities. Going extremely specific Level-5 doesn't make multi-platform home console games (since I'm assuming you don't count their cross platform handheld & mobile games).

Yes I did call the DS a console... because it is a handheld video game console. Unless I've been calling a very different device a DS this whole time.

Also by your standard Level-5 doesn't even make console games at all anymore other than Ni no kuni and the very occasional Wii and WiiU shovel ware title.

@bacontophat45: You were wrong, you'll live. If you think this conversation is stupid then you have the power to stop talking at any time.

"Also by your standard Level-5 doesn't even make console games at all anymore other than Ni no kuni and the very occasional Wii and WiiU shovel ware title."

You're right! Level 5 has sunken far since the PS2 days, barely making console games anymore and focusing on handheld stuff and Pokemon ripoffs. But they do throw out the occasional gem.

Oh so Ni no Kuni wasn't technically an exclusive ... as the Sony contingent would have us believe....

"Conceived as a project for Level-5's tenth anniversary, Ni no Kuni: Dominion of the Dark Djinn was released in December 2010 for the Nintendo DS. An enhanced version of the game for the PlayStation 3, Ni no Kuni: Wrath of the White Witch, was released in Japan in November 2011"
