Ninja Spirit, Blazing Lazers confirmed for Wii VC

Shinobi-style action game and vertically scrolling shoot-'em-up set to arrive next month, along with fellow TurboGrafx-16 games Ordyne and World Sports Competition.

With another month nearly in the books, Hudson has once again updated its list of TurboGrafx-16 games headed for the Wii's Virtual Console. In May, the publisher expects to see another quartet of offerings from the 16-bit-era console appear on Nintendo's downloadable game service. The slate of titles for the month consists of a pair of shoot-'em-ups in Blazing Lazers and Ordyne, as well as the action game Ninja Spirit and the Olympic-style World Sports Competition.

Originally released in 1989, Hudson's Blazing Lazers is a vertically scrolling shooter in the mold of previous Wii Virtual Console releases Super Star Soldier and Soldier Blade. Players pilot a lone ship against an alien armada, choosing from four different weapons that can be powered up multiple times.

With cartoonlike visual sensibilities and horizontally scrolling action, Namco Bandai's Ordyne offers a distinctly different take on the shoot-'em-up genre. Also released in 1989, Ordyne belongs firmly in the "cute-'em-up" subgenre of shooters.

Irem's arcade action game Ninja Spirit arrived on the TurboGrafx-16 in 1990 and featured a high-jumping protagonist mowing down waves of kite ninjas, staff-wielding monks, and boss demons with the help of a sword, various projectiles, and a handful of doppelgangers.

Released in 1992, Hudson's World Sports Competition offered TurboGrafx-16 players the chance to engage in some Summer Olympics-style fun. The game featured more than a dozen events, including shooting, rowing, swimming, archery, and track and field.

All games are currently listed with a May release window and a price of 600 Wii Points ($6). TurboGrafx-16 fans looking for something to tide them over until the next month's releases may be pleased to find that Hudson has also given the previously announced action game Shockman a Wii Virtual Console release date of April 30.

None of these games are currently available anywhere else, so I might have to pick up one or two.

I reccomend Bomberman and Dragon's Curse (Wonderboy 3) as definites and suggest Bonk's Revenge and Splatterhouse as ones to be considered. I would like to see Legendary Axe, Cadash, and Keith Courage in Alpha Zone come to the VC too though. Cadash being one of my favorites.

Well, they did say "16-bit-era console," not "16-bit console." So they're just saying it's from that time, but they're not saying it's actually a 16-bit console. I gotta check out some more TG-16 games, by the way.

"In May, the publisher expects to see another quartet of offerings from the 16-bit-era console appear on Nintendo's downloadable game service." Ummm.... I do believe the TG-16 was a 2x8bit system. The 16 was a manipulation that was more of a marketing trick than technically true. I do love it though, it made colors move fast. /walks away as if nothing happened.

JoeSmith34 "These games weren't even good enough to help the Turbo-Grafx 16 sell well at all compared to the Genesis or the SNES." The public MISSED these games because they were more concerned with how many real "bits" each system had under the hood. The PC Engine was built as a competitor to the 8-bit famicom, and NEC kicked major butt in Japan. When they tried to release it here, they were going up against Sega's "true" 16-bit Genesis and Sega's brilliant marketing campaign absolutely destroyed the horrendous PR handling and advertising of the TurbografX-16. Sega had more parallax scrolling, and in general better music. Especially the games that were scored by Yuzo Koshiro, which at the time were pretty revolutionary for gaming. The games on the TurbografX however, were some of the best games released in those years. Ninja Spirit being an excellent example, as it was possibly the best sidescrolling 2d ninja action game made.

The "goodness" of a game doesn't sell systems. The perception of a game being the "best new thing" does. All of these games are as well made and entertaining as anything you can compare them to. What the ever fickle public did or did not do eighteen years ago is irrelevant.

I agree with gilbrod....Hudson seems to be ignoring one of their best franchise games for the TG16 by not releasing Legendary Axe, although Blazing Lazers is a cool title. Hopefully we'll get to see Keith Courage, Devil's Crush, and Dead Moon sometime soon too.

fierro316 comthitnuong "Blazing lasers doesn't look too good" It's one of the best side scrollinbg shooters ever made, give it a try :p. Yes it is one of the best shooters ever made, but it's a vertical shooter. It was one of the top two titles at launch day (along with Legendary Axe) and it was well received critically. Definitely a must buy, and one you'll find has more of a soul than any other vertical shooter I've ever played, including the Star Soldier series (although this is arguably a relative of that series).

Sweet. Another 2 from Game Informer's top 10 Turbografx games. Now we need Ys, Neutopia, Legendary Axe, and...I forget. Splatterhouse was on there, though, so who knows how good it was...

Oh god no! Not Nija Spirit! There was a part of that game, where you are falling down this pit and ninjas are attacking you, that was IMPOSSIBLE for me when I played it. I remember even resorting to trying it blidfolded, to see if I could maybe use the force to aid me. I might have to get that just to torcher myself.
