Nintendo 3DS And Wii U Online Services Will Shut Down In April 2024

Pokémon Bank is the one exception.

Nintendo has announced that in early April 2024, online play, functionality, and communication will be shut down for Nintendo 3DS and Wii U software. This includes software that is exclusive to the New Nintendo 3DS as well, such as the Xenoblade Chronicles 3D port.

When the online support shuts down, features like online co-op play, internet rankings, and data distribution will no longer be available. Nintendo will reveal a specific date for the official shutdown later. Nintendo also mentioned that if some sort of event occurs that makes it harder to continue the services, it could necessitate an earlier closure than planned.

The only exception is Pokemon Bank, which will still be online. Nintendo also notes that support for it may end in the future as well. Fortunately, players will still be able to use features and game modes that don't require online communication after the shutdown, such as StreetPass, which relies on local communication. However, SpotPass does use online services, which means it won't be available.

Furthermore, it will still be possible to download update data and redownload purchased software and DLC from the eShop.

Nintendo closed down the 3DS and Wii U eShops earlier this year. This isn't the only shutdown this year, either. Microsoft said that the Xbox 360 Marketplace is closing in July 2024.

To anybody mad about this: Keep in mind, the Wii U was NOT a success! In fact, alongside the GameCube, it was one of their most prolific failures that shaped their tactics today with the Switch.

It was too expensive to keep up forever and no wonder it's online life was dying quickly.

It wasn't profitable anywhere near enough, plus Wii U and 3DS have the same servers.

"Even after March 27, 2023, and for the foreseeable future, it will still be possible to redownload games and DLC, receive software updates and enjoy online play on Wii U and the Nintendo 3DS family of systems."

So, the "foreseeable future" wasn't even SEVEN MONTHS. Screw Nintendo. They have once again proven they are full of crap.

Please, tell me again how digital copies are better than buying a physical copy?

Support game developers only by buying physical copies. Baldur's Gate 3 is a great example of digital only game in North America. Once the PS4 and PS5 store close in the future, that will be money you wasted on a game you don't own.

Something to think about when you do your next game purchase!
