Nintendo Changes SNES Classic Mini Plans, Supply Will Continue Into 2018

Huzzah!

Nintendo has announced it will extend availability of the SNES Mini/Classic Edition into 2018 for those in North America and Europe. That's a shift from its previous plans to only deliver the system until the end of 2017.

The announcement comes at a time when demand for the SNES Classic Mini is high, while supply remains low--at least for pre-orders. Nintendo acknowledged as much in a press release, saying today's news is "due to incredible demand" for the system. Those currently looking to purchase one are having extreme difficulty finding one in stores and online without paying an inflated price. Many retailers that have had the hardware available recently offered it in high-priced bundles.

Now Playing: GS News Update: NES & SNES Classics Will Be Available In 2018

Nintendo's confirmation that it will be available next year should assuage fears that people may not be able to get one, amidst the hype and constrained stock. It could also calm demand somewhat to make acquiring one more manageable. On launch day alone in the US, Nintendo said that "more units of Super NES Classic Edition will ship ... than were shipped of NES Classic Edition all last year, with subsequent shipments arriving in stores regularly."

On September 10, Nintendo of America president Reggie Fils-Aime addressed concerns that stock of the SNES Classic Mini would continue to remain limited and, as such, price gouging would be an ongoing problem. According to Fils-Aime, Nintendo has "dramatically increased" production for SNES Classic stock. "I would strongly urge you not to over-bid on an SNES Classic on any of the auction sites ... You shouldn't [have to] pay more than $79.99," he said.

The SNES Classic goes on sale on September 29. There are 21 games in the package, including Donkey Kong Country, Final Fantasy III, and Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past, as well as the previous unreleased Star Fox 2. You can see a roundup of all the games here.

Alongside today's news about the SNES Classic, Nintendo announced that it will bring back the hard-to-find NES Classic. That system will return in North America and Europe next year.

I seriously don't understand the appeal of a DRM emulator you have to pay for. There are so many superior options out there.

@xOmniCloudx: Most people prefer to be honest and pay for things rather than resorting to theft. This is why society hasnt crashed and burned yet.

I have never seen such a high demand for an emulator inside a console case.

@dudebropartyyo: it's more than an emulator. It's childhood memories. The 1990s for a lot of us older gamers was a special time. As a high school kid, skipping school to play street fighter II turbo, those were the days. Sleeping over at my friends and staying up all night playing starfox etc. Yes I do have a Wii and an emulator on that (with every game ever realeased) but it is not the same as an officially licensed product. Try playing Super Mario World on an emulator and you'll see what I mean. Lag.

@cantor2537: I am a 90's kid but still dont see much in this haha.

I have SMW among other Mario games, no lag on emulator. Anyways i understand your point so hope you manage to get one, after i made that comment i found original hardware for sale in my city so i will be grabbing that, very cheap as well, under 100 AUD with bunch of games :)

@jyml8582: I get that but if you just want it because it looks like original, could get original and games of your choice or if you care because its an emulator with some built in games could just use emulator on a laptop or PC or tablet.

I am not giving you crap for buying/wanting this haha, i am just curious as to why are people really getting this because its nothing really special to me besides it looks like a shrunk original.

@ChldsPlay: No one likes to steal but they are old games. I mean look at PS2 games on PS4 for example, its a massive rip off. Like Destroy all humans is 30 AUD, thats insane. It shouldnt be more than 10 AUD. I mean do we have to wait 100 years for things to become free and public lol :D

To me its somewhat of a proof that people will just pay without really thinking about the price and age of the game or that corps are using old games to cash in. The pricing also doesnt make sense compared to prices of today's games.

In general i think classic games, PS2 era and before should be between 1 and 10 dollars maximum.

@DavisBelle Again guys, dont get me wrong, i have nothing against people getting this, everyone is different. I mentioned to a dude in some comment above i tracked down original hardware with bunch of games for under 100 Aud to my big surprise so i will be picking that up next week

Good that more people will be able to get their hands on this.

The only people who are upset at this news are scalpers looking to make a quick buck off these systems at somebody else's expense. It'll be easy to pick out who these people are on this message board.

@si2k78: Perfectly stated.

My wife and I are happy too; the kids figured out how to use the save-state system, and have been overwriting our progress. :/

We can finally get our own.

Glad they're coming to their senses...

1. Make products that consumers clearly want to buy.

2. Ship enough product.

3. Profit.

If they truely intend to create enough supply to meet the demand then they've screwed up this whole thing from the get go.

If they're lying, then screw Nintendo for *again* pulling the wool over the eyes of their fans.

see, unlike a lot of people I want to buy one of these because I want to play it. But since Nintendo have done such a piss-poor job of meeting demand the thing has a reputation of being super rare and desirable, meaning even if there's enough on launch day they'll STILL get bought up by scalpers regardless!

Nintendo has done *nothing* to push the narrative that there will be enough to go around and because of that this product is out of reach of the people who want it most. The fans.
