Nintendo Confirms No Major E3 Event This Year, Reveals 1-2-Switch Shipment Numbers

Just like last year.

As part of Nintendo's latest earnings report, the company confirmed that it will not host a "large-scale" press conference at E3 this year. This is no big surprise, as Nintendo also didn't do one last year.

Nintendo will still be at E3, however. "Nintendo of America will present further information on our plans at a later date," Nintendo president Tatsumi Kimishima said.

If it's anything like last year, fans can expect a Nintendo Treehouse livestream event or some kind of other presentation featuring commentary and insight from developers and executives.

Also in Kimishima's prepared remarks, he revealed that 1-2-Switch is approaching 1 million copies shipped, while Snipperclips - Cut it out, together! has already passed more than 350,000 downloads. Super Bomberman R, meanwhile, has eclipses 500,000 copies shipped.

You can read the full remarks here [PDF].

In other Nintendo news, the company today announced the New Nintendo 2DS XL. Additionally, we have learned that the Switch has shipped 2.74 million units around the world so far.

I feel that not doing these big press conferences are a mistake. E3 is the biggest convention of the year and Nintendo is good at lacking advertising. I know they will be there, but they should be doing everything they can to share their console.

I didnt own a wii u, so my switch is my zelda box. I knew that going in. I have about 15 top tier games I need to play, so no rush here. I wouldn't buy anything for switch til zelda is at 100%, anyway. Id like to see some Wii u ports, but that's doubtful. It's not worth it for most to get physical releases to Nintendo, & for me it's not worth buying digital games on switch with only about 100GB of storage for mine (as I'm not continually buying SD cards). I knew nothing would be out until Christmas. The switch lineup starts with Mario for me. If the releases are all old games that I have bought several times over, I'll definitely sell it. I hate virtual console. I played all those games when I helped line Nintendo's pockets the first time, & dreaming of a day when hardware would be amazing enough to pull off games like Horizon. Nintendo avoids great hardware like it's the plague, so I'll never see that dream realized on a Nintendo console, but I certainly don't want to rebuy games from the 8 & 16 bit era that i couldn't get through quick enough, even though that was an era where Nintendo was competitive on the hardware front. Remasters, however, I'm ok with. If they can add something to an aging game to make it enjoyable by today's standards (or at least pretty it up so it doesn't look like the relic it is), I'll support that.

Why are people under the impression that Nintendo won't be at E3? Nintendo has almost as much floor space as Sony has. Nintendo just won't be having a press conference at e3. They will probably instead hold a Nintendo Direct.

@someone: The Nintendoom crew has to grasp at anything they can now , they predicted the Switch would be dead on arrival and here were are with the Switch unable to fullfil demand, i guess they like to pretend that Nintendo never reveals new games during streaming and that there aren't incoming games already confirmed before launch ( Splatoon , Arms , MArio Odyssey etc)

No matter.. not like I was planning to attend. As long as they have some new games to announce I'll be happy. Some updates on online functionality would be welcome too... still hoping a mobile phone app won't be mandatory for communication or there's little chance of me paying for the online service or playing anything asides from first party exclusives.

They don't need a large scale press conference to announce great new features and games. They just need another video with a guy clicking his fingers.

I'll buy the switch as soon as the following entries are at least being teased for the Switch:

Mario Kart 9

Third Donkey Kong Country in the Returns Trilogy

Super Smash Bros Switch

Normally a Nintendo console of any generation reaches its apex when the latest titles in the above franchises get released.

@agramonte: The same could be said of nearly all modern consoles , their early library its usually lackluster , at least Switch got Zelda and Mario already , also let's pretend the already announced games and how clearly Nintendo never reveals new games during streaming i guess , its not like Nintendo was hiding the stuff that would available early on for the Switch , you knew what was confirmed yet decided to buy while hoping games would be magically announced for a release date of next month i guess >_>

@maximimon:This has become the excuse now. No, it was not - I had at least 1 game to play every month during the PS4 launch. Zelda is done, Mario is 8 Months from now. Right now... you either pay 60 dollars and play Mario Kart WiiU again or wait for a 60 dollar port of Disgaea 5 (I played last year for 49.99 on PS4) or yet another version of Street Fighter 2. And what are the games for Jun? ARMS and wait for it... CaveStory!!!! ??? circa 2011 ???.

No, I thought there would be game announcements after launch (like Nintendo said last year). And there has been - I just didnt think they would be announcing garbage like Monopoly and SineMora (a port of a game I played on the Vita years ago) and that every 3rd party game announcement so far would exclude the switch.

Nintendo is like a super talented kid that just doesn't get along with other kids and doesn't seem interested in interacting with them anyways. Instead of going to prom, he/she just goes and throws his/her own party that no one else is invited to except close family friends and relatives while livestreaming the festivities.

Judging from last years "most boring E3 presentation in E3´s history" i can only thank Nintendo for not doing a repeat of that and staying away.

And almost 2.8mill sold worldwide is not bad, but it´s not good either.

@Jacanuk: "And almost 2.8mill sold worldwide is not bad, but it´s not good either."

That was the total number of Switches sold during FY 2017, which ended March 31. The Switch launched March 3.

Meaning: 2.74 million was over just 29 days. That is damn good.

But considering that Playstation sold that plus another 100k in a single month.

Well the icing is on the cake.

@Jacanuk: "Playstation sold that plus another 100k in a single month"

Are you referring to the 2.9 million PS4s that Sony reported shipping in its recent earnings report?

That was over three months, January through March (aka Q4 of the fiscal year).

@darkouer: I say it's surprising because it's pathetic attempt to recapture Wii sports (I played Wii sports, and 1 2 switch, you are no Wii sports...in a Reagan voice). It's a vibrating controller game, that you don't even need a screen to play. I think that should strip the label of "video" from that "game". Price is high, but the fact that people actually buy that on purpose, even if it was $5, is disheartening for long time Nintendo fans, adults now, hoping the company would have to eventually recognize they exist.

If I were in charge of Nintendo, I would do a great E3 presentation. I would start with showing Mario, then do a few lesser known games being developed. Show the new Kid Icarus. Then show a few more minor games. Then end the presentation with a Metroid trailer. Then drop the mic.

@gaminsincepong: as a finale, get the dudes from Office Space, play "damn it feels good to be a gangsta," by Geto Boys in the background, and have them beat the religion out of a pile of wiimotes, to show that's the and of the suffering for is all and motion controllers are dead (not normal controllers that have a little gyro in them, but motion controllers that only have a little normal in them).

That is ok with me. I'm completely happy with how Nintendo has been handling its software so far. Sure E3 is a very exciting time, but it doesn't make or break any of the companies. I enjoy the directs throughout the year just as much.

@dimetro7: The last Nintendo direct was a fiasco. Monopoly?... and half the Switch spot were old ports - I played Sine Mora on my Vita like 3 years ago. PayDay 2? that is like from 2013.

@agramonte: I can't say monopoly was a high point but lol. I'm ok with the old ports personally. I'm of the mindset I'd rather have old ports then nothing. I can see where people could be bummed about the direct but I am also happy we are getting directs. Was it last year or year before where there weren't hardly any? Idk just pumped in general for Nintendo. I mean as soon as virtual console opens up, I'll be buying MARIO for the 4th time so I personally can't complain about any old games lol

@dimetro7: Not like I have a Problem with ports or updates in general. I think Disgaea 5 for the Switch is a great idea, still fairly new and great match for home and on the go play. If they release the Wii Xenoblade again (in any shape or form) I'll buy it - and WonderBoy is amazing!. But make these games part of the Mix - It is not like COD, BattleFront, Shadows of War, Blood Vein or Destiny waited till E3 to be announced. Give us a bone.

Well they were dark days - I think I remember one for Tokyo Mirage. I'm pumped for Nintendo also up to a point. The Switch with the right game is fantastic - and would be a shame if it fails.

Hopes crushed of a metroid reveal or more Mario odyssey then, Nintendo need to show us all why we purchase their console and what's in store for the future,

They kind of need to otherwise it's all eyes on PS4 and Scorpio

I know the news of Nintendo's absence shouldn’t come as any sort of surprise but if I’m being completely honest, well… I’m a little disappointed.

I’m not bashing Nintendo at all as they are probably more influential than any other developer out there and are the sole reason the gaming industry has grown to the heights it has today, but I was really hoping we would see a reinvigorated Nintendo, one that would amaze and shock us with a collection of unique and big name games at E3.

I almost feel in a way that this move is not just in part motivated by finances but also by a lack of confidence (Not hating.). If you are confident in your games (and I do mean reeaaallllly confident in what you are bringing to the table.) you wouldn’t mind paying the extra X amounts of dollars to have a presence there regardless of whether that amount was “a waste of money” or not. Why? Because, with a few exceptions, there is probably no other trade show/event in the gaming world that garners as much attention and reception as E3. In a sense it is our “super bowl”, an event that we all look forward to each year for the plethora of new games, announcements, and gossip going into the new-year.

It’s a place not just to showcase your hardware, or to announce new partnerships and alliances (alliances, Ninja? What is this, Survivor?), but probably more than anything else a place to create and foster hype and excitement. It also gives people like us, people who go on gaming websites and love what this medium has to offer, a reason to get excited. By voluntarily skipping out on that Nintendo is more or less saying “we don’t care.”

I understand they have their “Treehouse” conference but, well… it’s just not the same. I can’t help but wonder if this move is indicative of Nintendo’s unwillingness to change for the better.

-Wow, Ninja. That post was actually kind of negative.-

I am still trying to understand Nintendo, for years I was following game industry news, including Nintendo ones. And judging from what I learned, during whole these years, is that Nintendo management are completely retarded. Everything they did, since Wii started to struggle, in late life span, was idiotic at best. Trying to copy Wii early success, started to make anything but game consoles. Wii U was just Wii with additional screen, seriously??? What Nintendo was thinking, people will buy under-powered peace of c@@@ with humongous screen on the controller! wow! Switch?? dont even start! Home console which is tablet??? excuse me what??? How the hell tablet can be full blown home console????? (facepalm) And what is with these childish Mario and Zelda games on every corner??? I know back in 80s it was revolution, but looks like 30 years after release of Mario, creators are still stuck in their past and trying to ride on Zelda and Mario wave, but reality is, no one gives a f@@@ about Mario or Zelda. People wants GTA, open world RPG's, insane graphics and and Hollywood action gameplay. Nintendo says no, they know better than us gamers, what we need. Yes we need Mario and Zelda only!!! (facepalm) Nintendo will die and this is inevitable. How come, you can ignore E3 and think , job well done, with a Switch, which you just released without third-party support and not even one good single game???? Nintendo trying to be different, trying to show what they are different company than Sony or Microsoft and what they not competing against them, but all this is nonsense, they just to damned egocentric to admit, what they screwed. Where is salvation for Nintendo, but they are to stubborn to do that. Get down to the ground accept your failures, stop innovating where you can not. Build as powerful as possible 4k gaming machine, sign major third party developers, concentrate on adult game, and only occasionally release some Mario or Zelda games for kids. Simple formula for success but to smart for Nintendo management (facepalm)
