Nintendo Direct Streaming Today: Start Time, Details, And More

The 50-minute broadcast from Nintendo will focus on Smash Bros. and other Switch games coming in the first half of 2021.

The latest Nintendo Direct--the first full one in more than a year--will be streamed today, February 17. The stream will, according to Nintendo itself, focus on upcoming Switch games as well as more news related to Super Smash Bros. Ultimate. This presentation will be very long, lasting around 50 minutes instead of the 15-20 minutes we've seen from the "mini" Direct events. It's the first such event from Nintendo since September 2019, so you won't want to miss it. [Update: The presentation is over, and you can check out all the Nintendo Direct news in our recap.]

Nintendo did not provide any further details around what to expect, only saying it would feature "information focused on available games like Super Smash Bros. Ultimate and games coming to Nintendo Switch in the first half of 2021." With Smash, it's safe to assume a new fighter will be revealed, as there are still several more characters to come as part of Fighters Pass 2.

Here's how to watch the Nintendo Direct broadcasting today, Wednesday, February 17.

Nintendo Direct February 17: How To Watch

  • When: Wednesday, February 17, 2021 at 2 PM PT / 5 PM ET
  • Where: YouTube

The February 17 Nintendo Direct event takes place at 2 PM PT / 5 PM ET. You can watch the Direct as it airs through the YouTube embed below.

International Start Times

  • US West Coast: 2 PM PT
  • US East Coast: 5 PM ET
  • UK: 10 PM GMT
  • Sydney, AU: 9 AM AET (Feb. 18)

Predictions And What To Expect

We could hear about other games besides Smash during the upcoming Nintendo Direct. These could include titles like Bravely Default 2, New Pokemon Snap, and Monster Hunter Rise, all of which are scheduled to release in the first half of 2021. Other announced Switch games, albeit without release dates, include Shin Megami Tensei V, Bayonetta 3, and Metroid Prime 4. Notably, this year marks the 35th anniversary of The Legend of Zelda's release in Japan, so it's possible that some kind of Zelda-centric news will be revealed. A sequel to Breath of the Wild is known to be in the works, but it's been quite some time since we got a glimpse of it. The first reveal only really confirmed that the game would be a sequel to Breath of the Wild and sport the same art style. However, because it looks to be running on the same engine, it's possible it could also have a shorter development time.

Nintendo provided no indication that there would be hardware news at the event, but given the super-sized nature of the event, enthusiastic fans will no doubt get their hopes up for some kind of announcement. Reports have continued to persist that Nintendo will release a so-called Switch Pro that features enhanced hardware. For its part, Nintendo says it won't release a new Switch model this year. This March marks the four-year anniversary of the console's release. By this point, the Wii U was already reaching the end of its life.

$50 says it's the switch Pro, or an updated switch console model.

Metroid 35th anniversary celebration or GTFO I say.
It's been 19 years since Metroid 4 FFS, it's time for Metroid 5.

@tbird7586: YES! I feel that is the best Xenoblade ever made in the series. It is time to port it to Switch and get the entire series on Switch.

@sonic_spark: If we're talking Prime, they need to quick screwing around and drop the Metroid Prime Trilogy on Switch already. If we are talking 'real' Metroid, it's time for Metroid 5. It's been almost 20 years since the last real entry.

Metroid, Metroid II, Super, Fusion, is what you're referring to I guess? The remake of Return of Samus you're excluding I guess?

Other M was kind of a throwback, albeit, a bit linear. I'm guessing you're wanting a third person game. That would be awesome.

@sonic_spark: Yeah the mainline series. I only discount 2 because it was a remake, and honestly it's really crappy it's stuck on the 3DS. Would love a port to Switch, but that's not gonna happen I bet.

Metroid 5 (preferably in 2D, not 2.5D) is what I'm after. Fusion changed up Samus in some pretty significant ways, and we've just never seen her story continue. It's all prequels and spinoffs.

@sonic_spark: BotW Sequel seems likely for the end of this year. I'd be shocked in Prime 4 was released this year though. I'm expecting late 2022 or early 2023 for MP4.

I kept saying that to myself for years with Twilight Princess haha. But I agree. It should be coming this year.

Hopefully the rumors of a Ninja Gaiden remastered trilogy coming to switch is true. Would love to replay those games. I wonder who will be the next Smash fighter.

@Heartagram_03: If Ninja Gaiden Trilogy was a Switch exclusive I'd be pretty pissed. I don't want to play that on this under-powered toy, I want to play it on a real console.

Predictions:

A) Some 35th anniversary Zelda releases for the 1st half of 2021. This could include Twilight Princess HD and Wind Waker HD ports from the Wii U. Also, either a 3d Zelda collection with Majoras Mask and Ocarina, or the announcement of N64 games on the live service with these games headlining it. Possible the reveal of Skyward Sword HD.

B) A look at Pokemon Snap 2.

C) Some Metroid news, though perhaps not Metroid Prime 4. A lot of people are sleeping in the fact that this year is Metroid's 35 anniversary too. Probably revealing rereleases, or another remake of an older game. Maybe Metroid Prime trilogy on the Switch?

D) For Smash Bros, it will either be a 3rd party character reveal trailer, or even a new Zelda fighter (possible one or more of the champions from BotW). I think it's safe to say a new fighter will be revealed either way.

E) I wouldn't be surprised if they end the direct with a new trailer for Breath of the Wild's sequel, with the release date revealed for holiday 2021

Seriously, people won't shut up about Zelda's Anniversary, but it's time for some Metroid celebration. 35 years, and 19 of that without a new entry in the main series.

@P00DGE: Regarding BotW, they did say in a previous direct that we'd have to "wait a little bit longer for an update". This could be that update, perhaps a new teaser. Not getting my hopes up, but if it is, that'd be awesome.

Interested to see what Smash has in store next.

@ohrenclez: Me too.

You know, it's ironic but I gave up worrying about whether or not the game was "adult" or "edgy" and started worrying more about whether it was actually fun to play when I stopped being a child. lol.

@skyhighgam3r: Mario and Zelda are very intrinsically enjoyable. Adult games are classified as such because they contain violence, sexual content, and drug/alcohol use. But ironically, these are the things adolescents think are cool, and so often times "adult" games end up being rather immature themselves.

@P00DGE: Of course they are, but what I'm saying is shooting someone in the face is intrinsically 'more' enjoyable than jumping on a mushroom.

My point being I've always sought out games with 'adult' content because I find adult content genuinely more satisfying - not to 'be cool'.

@skyhighgam3r: that sounds just a tiny bit serial killer-y to me, but to each their own. I like FPS games too, but not any more than I like Mario games, or Smash Bros, or whatever. The game mechanics being fun, and the world design being interesting, is more important to me than how adult something is in its presentation

@skyhighgam3r: 17 years since Metroid Prime 2, 15 years since Metroid Prime 3. But I get your point.

The series isnt dead though. Not like F-Zero. I mean, even though it sucked, its been 11 years since Other M, and 4 years since the Metroid 2 remake. And we already know Metroid Prime 4 is in the works

@P00DGE: Yeah I'm referring to the 'main' series Metroid, Metroid II: Return of Samus, Super Metroid, and Metroid 4: Fusion. Prime is cool, and I did kind of like Other M - but nothing comes close to how great the main series is.. (was?).

F-Zero is another one that bugs me. Some people argue there's no point with Mario Kart, but I'm not paying 40$-60$ for a Mario Kart from 2014. F-Zero, by comparison, would be more worth my money.

As far as Metroid: Samus Returns... I need it to not be on the 3DS. I know I'm alone in this but I can't stand the 3DS. It's as bad as the Wii and the Wii U IMO. If they port that to Switch, I'll be satisfied, at least partly.

It is time to put Smash Bros. Overpriced DLC to bed Nintendo. I know there are people that live and breathe Smash Bros. and fighting games. But, it can't be that many versus people that play FPS shooters or even stand alone Mario titles. Give us Metroid Prime 4 and other new ideas.

@gamerman187: Meh. If they're having fun with it still, I don't see how it harms me any. Besides, I kind of think at this point that Smash has almost become more of a playable Character Hall of Fame more than anything else-- which is, kinda cool when I think about it. I may not play it but, I can still admit that it's still kind of a neat idea to have around to me.

As for Metroid Prime 4-- well, I'm cutting them some slack since they had to scrap everything and start again. Yes, I'm getting some serious withdrawals myself, but... I'd rather wait for the good stuff-- which, it's Retro so, yeah, it's gonna be good stuff.

Would honestly dance for joy if there was even just a boring emulated port ala 3D All Stars of the original trilogy though. But, it's Metroid. Metroid has always been treated like the the red-headed stepchild so, not holding my breath on anything being done for the anniversary.

Naw, as exciting as it is to see a Direct is happening again, it's most likely just a new Smash character and a bunch of Pokemon announcements-- Even Zelda is gonna get bumped for that. Pokemon makes just way too much $$$.
