Nintendo Exec Comments On SNES Classic Supply

Reggie Fils-Aime also advises against paying a premium on auction sites.

After the NES Classic was basically impossible to find for many, fans are no doubt wondering what the stock situation will be for the soon-to-launch SNES Classic. Nintendo of America president Reggie Fils-Aime said in an interview with Financial Times that Nintendo "dramatically increased" production for SNES Classic stock. He advised people not to pay more than the $80 sticker price on auction sites for the console, suggesting the system will be readily available.

When SNES Classic units opened for pre-order, they were hard to find. Some took this as a sign that SNES Classic, like the NES Classic, would be short on supply. However, Fils-Aime said issues with SNES Classic pre-orders were "outside our control" at retailers. He added that for the SNES Classic, supply is not the issue.

"I would strongly urge you not to over-bid on an SNES Classic on any of the auction sites . . . You shouldn't [have to] pay more than $79.99," Fils-Aime said.

As for the NES Classic shortages, Fils-Aime said Nintendo said the company was not holding back stock on purpose to create an artificial scarcity situation. Nintendo did not produce enough units, Fils-Aime said, because the models that Nintendo looked at for retro consoles from other companies apparently showed they might not be very popular.

Suffice to say, it sounds like Nintendo has learned from the problems with the NES Classic supply, though only time will tell how it actually works out. The SNES Classic goes on sale on September 29. There are 21 games in the package, including Donkey Kong Country, Final Fantasy III, and Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past, as well as the previous unreleased Star Fox 2. You can see a roundup of all the games here.

Nintendo could probably have loaded all the classic NES games, PLUS the SNES games on a 64 gig internal memory. Then surely everyone would be happy, and the Classic, (read Ancient), SNES clone might even be worth buying!

Oh well, as the saying goes, fools and their money are soon parted.

So we definitely can't call Nintendo "fools", as far as recycling the recycled goes.

I had to pay €99 for my preorder. That's like $110 or something. Was sold out in minutes. Even though I paid €30 more I still feel lucky.

Just goes to show Nintendo sells themselves short. Even they don't believe in their company anymore, so why should anybody else. I really can't stand this guy, he's so smug but he sucks at his job.

You are a liar Reggie and just a transparent mouthpiece of Nintendo of Japan with zero control over anything. Money has already been exchanged, minis have been scalped and sold to Nintendo fans and NOJ doesn't give afffuuuuuck. If you actually had more stock you would have opened the pre-orders and spoken via your actions yet instead we receive a blanket statement of pure and utter damage control that insults more than it assures or fixes. Luckily I can go without your latest plug and play ponzi scheme toy as I was merely planning to rip out the internals and replace it with something worth more than seeing Reggie get fisted by Miyamoto like a Rarsberry pi with a 8bitdo NES30 Pro but many other real Nintendo fans don't see your products like I do and will genuinely have to go without this Christmas just so NOJ can grind down consumers and fans with artificial scarcity tactics. I wouldn't be surprised at this point if Nintendo was secretly operating as 90% of the scalpers out there. I thank god every day for allowing me to depart from the Global Nintendo Scam, I was knee deep and it's not easy letting go of your childhood and the safety and comfort it provides but one day you just have to wipe Reggie's semen out of your eyes and say enough is enough. I deserve better, you deserve better, we demand Miyamoto fist Reggies ass on live television every time he lies about the SNES Mini situation! Nothing more, nothing less.

I wanted a NES Classic so bad but could never find one. And $200 bucks for only 30 old games, just haven't been able to bring myself to do it. Hopefully this is true and SNES Classic is easier to find.

Why haven't the board members voted Reggie Fils-Aime out... the stock holders couldn't easilly be making way more money if someone else was in control

@dngdangerous: Reggie fulfills his role for them. It isn't his job to make fans happy. It's his job to be the mouthpiece for Nintendo in America and direct its operations in this country, which has been passable. His strength has been in conforming to NOJ's plans, and not risking his job on ideas of his own. Any short comings he can blame on the core plan. It is a weak tactic, and can only go so far, but it does drag it out. Think of him as that brown nosing worm that dials it in from long distance. I'm sure you've witnessed more than your fair share at your jobs.

People can beeitch about scalpers, but people buying those sclapers items are just as bad and contributing to industry of scalping products.

"You shouldn't have to pay more than $79.99". Yeah right, in Sweden the price is 1599 kr (which is about 200$) at every store. NES Classic was however normally priced (but impossible to buy). The company that is in charge of the import most likely takes advantage of the situation and put some extra money in their pockets. Most likeley it will be cheaper to buy from scalpers from other countries than directly from a store...

Actually you shouldn't have to pay more than about $39.99 for so few really old games and the cheap plastic box they come wrapped in!

@maloc: Yeah, I'm thinking about doing just that. I can buy the SNES mini from a scalper from another country including shipping, and it will be cheaper than buying this shit in Sweden.

Yeah cause producing 35 is 'dramatically more' than the 10 they made of the NES classic.

Lol! PR spin job! If their take is we didn't know the NES Classic was going to be popular, why are you even in business Nintendo? You seriously don't know your legacy or your industry? I'm just a video game collector, fan, hobbyist, enthusiastic, etc; from the comments I saw online I KNEW it was going to be a hit, it was the GD NES. The system that not only saved gaming but elevated it. It's such a ridiculous stance they have, I don't work for a billion dollar company but why can I see what they couldn't? Don't these companies supposedly hire people to monitor the internet?

@e3man01: It's disconnect with the consumers. This can often be a problem with companies that have been around for so long with the same people at the top.

@playstationzone: You're right. Nintendo doesn't want the money selling the systems would have gotten them and created a false shortage out of spite!

...That was sarcasm. With due respect, everything you said is both crazy and unintelligible.

"You shouldn't [have to] pay more than $79.99" And yet we do because retailers are not being allocated enough stock. This is what retailers are saying. They are not being given enough stock. How is that NOT a Nintendo problem?

"Nintendo "dramatically increased" production for SNES Classic stock."

Compared to the NES classic I suppose. It's easy to manufacture 100% more of something if the original quantity was a tiny amount. See, I WANT one of these to actually play but there are people out there making SNES shells you can put a raspberry pi in for a lot less money than this. So if Nintendo doesn't want your money by allowing you to buy one legit, why not just get one of those?

If you didn't preorder it, expect ebay and Amazon with scalped prices your only chance. Fact, Nintendo NEVER overestimates demand, it's always underestimated...

I want to be somewhat charitable and say that I can see why they might not have understood just how popular the NES Classic was going to be. I mean, the Big Box Store I work at had the Sega Genesis and Atari versions pretty readily available a lot of the time, they weren't moving much at all, so Nintendo might have assumed that the NES Classic would perform roughly the same. HOWEVER, that doesn't excuse how they did a few other things. We'll just have to wait and see what happens.

@drthemoworm: Understanding popularity and understanding scalpers are two things. Scalpers easily buy a bunch of consoles each so Nintendo has to consider that if they make too few scalpers will be getting a huge portion of the consoles. If they really go crazy and do tons, then scalpers will be hesitant to get any, which means Nintendo would have to be able to sell all of those to actual customers. It's like parabel differential with a very precise sweet spot

@drthemoworm: It's not even the first time Nintendo's done it. They've been doing this for years. The NES Classic and Amiibos are just the most recent examples.

I'll believe it when I see them in stores. But Reggie says nothing, not a peep or one word about how Gamestop/ThinkGeek is selling their preorders for over MSRP of 79.99 but tells us not to resort to eBay bidding...

@resevl4rlz: GameStop/ThinkGeek are technically selling their SNES Classics for $79.99, but forcing you to buy other merchandise that costs extra.
