Nintendo files suit because of Tear Ring Saga
Nintendo says that Enterbrain's Tear Ring Saga is too similar to its own Fire Emblem series.
Nintendo Company Limited has filed suit against Japanese game companies Tirnanog and Enterbrain, according to a report by Reuters Japan. The dispute involves the development and distribution of the PlayStation title Tear Ring Saga (Emblem Saga), which Nintendo claims infringes on copyright laws. The company has requested the prohibition of the manufacture, sale, and distribution of the game and a reparation payment of 260 million yen (about $2 million).
"The original title of the game, Emblem Saga, had a similar name to the Fire Emblem series and was used deliberately for promotional purposes until it was changed a month and a half before the release date," Nintendo said in a press release. "The game's contents were closely similar to the Fire Emblem series as well."
The Fire Emblem strategy simulation series has been one of Nintendo's flagship properties since the Famicom/NES days.
