Nintendo Hasn't Made A Star Fox In Seven Years, But Here's The Next Best Thing

It's not exactly Star Fox, but still, I guess I should be thankful.

Star Fox fans have been longing for a new space-faring shooter in that old-school linear dogfighting style, and right now the prospects look grim. With hope seemingly lost, however, Flippfly--the developer behind 2013 indie hit Race The Sun--have a present for ya with their next project, Whisker Squadron: Survivor.

Whisker Squadron is a roguelite on-rails space shooter where players blast into space as the titular Whisker Squadron--Olivia, Gigi, Max, and Ross--as they do a barrel roll in 30-minute runs across 10 randomly generated zones. Each zone is filled with cocky little freaks called the Swarm, which range from small enemies to massive bosses, and each run will present a new set of challenges.

Now Playing: Whisker Squadron: Survivor Launch Trailer

The game also allows players to make changes to their ship between runs, where they can give a different pilot a chance to kick some tail--with each pilot offering different attribute buffs--or add or change weapon types for when they want to try shooting the bad guys. Customization is completely in the player's hands, so long as they never give up and trust their instincts, but just be sure to use bombs wisely.

Whisker Squadron: Survivor will launch in early access on Steam August 21, with a plan to be all systems go in early 2024. If this makes you say "can't let you do that, Flippfly" and you want to play sooner, a brief demo of the game is available for download now.

nintendo probably see "star fox" as one of the lower popularity ip, so nintendo wouldn't risk making a lot "star fox" games as they do to "super mario" and "the legend of zelda" would.

I'm surprised Flippfly is still around. Haven't heard that name... Well, since 2013, really.

Why is every indie game a roguelike/lite nowadays?

The game isn't even on a Nintendo platform. I feel like this article is misleading.

Just wanted to say I loved how many Star Fox 64 dialogue references got snuck into this post.

Don't overlook Ex-Zodiac, another game even more like Star Fox (same type of low-poly graphics, animal characters, bespoke stages that are not procedurally generated). It's been in Early Access about a year, but what they've got so far is gold.
