Nintendo moves 1M systems in 1 week

Japanese juggernaut simultaneously shatters records in America, UK, and Japan; Fils-Aime laments stock shortages.

The 2007 holiday-shopping season is less than one week old, but console makers are already beginning to spin their sales numbers. Yesterday, Sony reported that North American PlayStation 3 sales have tripled since the period beginning November 2--when the new $399 40GB model was introduced--through November 24. Though the company didn't report exact sales numbers, extrapolation from NPD's October report puts the figure at somewhere around 322,000 units sold in the US and Canada in three weeks.

Now, Nintendo has revealed its sales figures in the US for the "Black Friday" week of November 18-24. The seven-day period was Nintendo's best ever in the US, with over 1.03 million systems sold in the 50 states. Of those, 350,000 were $249 Wiis, and 653,000 were $129 DSes. The latter figure eclipsed the record set in 2005, when over 600,000 Game Boy Advances were sold during Thanksgiving Week. On November 23, two new DS colors--rose and gold--were introduced via bundles with Nintendogs and The Legend of Zelda: Phantom Hourglass, respectively.

Outgoing Nintendo of America senior vice president of marketing and corporate communications George Harrison took the time to beat the corporate hype drum one last time. "As shoppers look for ways to maximize their limited holiday-spending money, they turn to gifts that can be used by the entire family," he said while presumably packing up his desk. "The Wii and Nintendo DS offer something for every member of the family." Nintendo also touted the affordability of its platforms by saying they were well suited for families hit "with higher gas prices and fuel costs."

Nintendo also reached two major milestones outside the US this week. Famitsu publisher Enterbrain is reporting that the DS has now sold 20.05 million units in Japan, thanks to the never-ending Brain Training craze still afflicting the island nation. The handheld hit the 20 million-unit mark in just three years--three years earlier than the previous fastest-selling game platform in the country, the PlayStation 2.

Meanwhile, on the other side of the warming planet, the DS was taking the UK by storm. Chart-Track--the British answer to the NPD Group--reports that over 191,000 units of the handheld were sold last week. That's more than any other platform in a seven-day period since game-hardware sales figures began to be recorded in the UK. Previously, the distinction had been held by the PlayStation Portable, which sold over 185,000 units when it went on sale in September 2005.

But, as much as Nintendo's cup runneth over, it's still not enough for Nintendo of America president Reggie Fils-Aime. Speaking at a conference covered by GameSpot corporate sibling News.com, the outspoken executive admitted that he rues the fact that many would-be Wii buyers are losing patience with the console's ongoing shortage.

"At this point, we are literally trying to catch up with demand," bemoaned Fils-Aime. "[Prospective Wii buyers] aren't going to sleep outside of a store overnight or visit a retailer five or six times. It is literally a missed opportunity."

I'm proud of Nintendo. I own a DS and a Game Cube (because I'll be able to play MK:Dec, TSFP and Smash Bros. Melee on the Wii). For a long time, 1998-2006, I was pissed at Nintendo for falling off. They'd become arrogant. Now, it seems they've learned from past mistakes and won me back as a fan. The practical issues: backward compatibility, price, ease of use - Nintendo has started addressing them. During N64 and GC, they were ignoring practicality. Now, it seems that Sony has swapped places with Nintendo. Sony is ignoring practicality.

What Nintendo has accomplished is pretty impressive. The Wii has become a second system to many hardcore gamers, and is being snatched up by people who have never bought a console before. That's why they are selling so well. I see it all the time at work. People who have never bought consoles, but know I play games, come to ask me about how to get a Wii, how to beat a particular game, etc.

Those numbers are totally amazing. Wow what a terrific story. This is, officially, the last time I will ever visit this web page. Those numbers are totally ridiculous and sweet though for the big N and I really do think this story is good. It's too bad I will only go to sites that are not a joke from now on for news in the industry. << LINK REMOVED >>

Lupidonkey , you are absolutely right. But keep in mind that Sony and Microsoft merely publish their games, they don't develop them. They've bought studios for that. Imagine how much more freedom these studios may have had if they didn't have a mega-corporation breathing down their necks. At the same time though they have provided these studios with bucketloads of money. But, once again. Sony and Microsoft don't make games, Nintendo does.

At the moment, I've got a temporary job at HMV in England, (UK); and we have people come in and ring us everyday and ask the dreaded question "Have you got any wiis in?, do you know when they are going to come in?, can you ring me back when they come in, can i pre-order one?". "No we don't, we don't know when they will come in, we cannot ring you, or pre-order, I'm sorry". And when we do get some in, they sell-out so quickly, its stupid, this is the same for the DS. I'm happy that i've got both of them (DS & a Wii) :) We have lots and lots of PS3s in, if anyone wants to buy one :P same with the 360, but they sell more than the ps3.

It seriously warms my heart to see Nintendo climbing back up after the beating it received from Sony the last two generfations. Nintendo is the last "true" video game company creating consoles. Sony and Microsoft just jumped aboard with their limitless supplies of cash and hit Sega and Nintendo when these two companies pimary focus was video games. Sega lost in the end and Nintendo trudged on, and finally when it seemed like Nintendo couldn't compete in the console arena any longer, along came Wii. Nintendo deserves to be where it is and has learned it's lesson, you can't be top dog forever you must always look ahead. Now Nintendo needs to wipe out these intuders and bring back companies that deserve to be in our realm.

Good for Nintendo. Since I can't get a Wii, I can't play it yet. I am looking forward to getting one soon. Many of my co-workers and friends, say they enjoy playing the system with their families. Sounds good to me.

I doubt that the wii is going to be the best selling console of all time. Well come to think of it, it does appeal to more consumers with the wii mote. Now having said that, i found that alot of the people i know who werent gamers and bought a wii only play wii sports, and thats it. So really it should be that wii sports is the greatest game of all time?

I can't understand the fascination that so many gamers have with the number of sales that consoles get. Surely what matters are the games, and if the good ones don't sell well and make money, then more won't be made. And instead of intelligent, innovative games on the shop shelves, we get the usual derivative dross. Is it fair that games like Need for Speed will always return huge profits and have endless sequels while titles like Okami fail miserably and the developers never get a chance to improve on it and create a quality franchise?

"Nintendo hasn't been taking a hit on the Wii, ever." Ok, maybe I was wrong, but that doesn't disprove my point. (The Wii must have some pretty horrid specs if that is true.) It appears Nintendo is winning the "console war" (if there is even such thing) and they don 't have to meet the demand if they don't want to. They can continue selling the amount they produce while Sony and Microsoft's consoles collect dust on the shelves. If anyone thinks this "shortage" is anything but artificial doesn't know a think about console marketing.

Wow, Nintendo hit the right formula for this generation!! Their success has just been incredible. Especially considering that even after launch people had mostly discounted the Wii overtaking either of its competitors, and that so many people felt the PSP would kill the DS... It seems Nintendo has just synced with the way gaming has become totally mainstream in the last few years, and has produced the ideal products to benefit from that.

Good job nintendo i think their production is high enough. They are putting out more console than any other company in the last couple generations of systems. Eventually supply will catch up to demand but if you ramp up supply another 200000 units a month it would be cool for like a month but thats a lot of work to open up a place to push out another 200,000 units and say that 200,000 comes out and a month later supply meets demand then you have a whole factory to shut down people to transfer, and you just lost a half a million dollars, I think the fact that they are pushing out 900,000+ after a year every month is fair i mean thats double the amount x360 has ever pushed out in a month,

Reggie should stop whining to the press about how they can't meet demand. If they're making such a killing then it obviously justifies increasing production and HE'S the one who can do it.

I think eventually everyone who wants a Wii will get one, making it more accessable for people who don't have one yet. If 10 people want Wiis, and their local Gamestop gets 6 in a shipment, that's 6 less people who will be getting them in the next shipment. I know it sounds stupid, what I'm saying, but every market has its saturation point. Nintendo might not even be close to thinking of it, but at some point these Wiis will have stopped disappearing into thin air.

"Meanwhile, on the other side of the warming planet, the DS was taking the UK by storm." I hope you are talking about how the hearts on the planet are warming towards each other through video game similarities. If this is a cheap commentary about global warming; I'm disappointed in you Tor.

way to go nintendo!!!! i've got nothing against the other consoles but dont u just love it when the underdog freaking shoots to top. this is the best turnaround from a company that i've seen in a while. everyone basically drop that last shovel of dirt on nintendos grave with the gamecube but now look, i bet so many people are eating their words, its hilarious. remember when they said that no the wii will fail miserably, then they said oh, its only gonna last a month, then they said any day now its going down for them, then even just a couple of months ago they said look their sales are only 3x the competition not 7x like b4 so see their losing steam. now look they sold more systems in a week then the rest did in almost a month.

d-rtyboy, but there is one thing you forgot. Nintendo sells their consoles at a higher cost than it costs to make them. The Wii's technical specifications barely even surpase the original Xbox's. Nintendo hasn't been taking a hit on the Wii, ever. They hit the ground running making a profit off of the Wii. On a side note, Nintendo will not drop their price until one of the competitors start to really cut into its price range. When the Xbox 360 arcade reaches like $199.99, then they will cut it, otherwise I wouldn't count on a price drop.

Since console makers traditionally lose money from selling consoles and make it back via the license system, it stands to reason that Nintendo is being very business savvy by only producing how much it knows it can sell. Therefor it is reducing the hit the company takes from hardware costs. I think Sony and M$ will use this strategy in the future. The genius of it all is that from what I've read that Nintendo is still outselling the competition.

"What I don't get is the PS3 and Wii... DON'T HAVE ANY GAMES. Are a bunch of good ones coming up or something? I must have missed the memo. Now I might get the Wii if it had games, but where are they?" What kind of games are you looking for? Chances are out of the two you'll have better luck finding it on the Wii which has a steadily growing library.

Sorry... I been wanting to play a Wii for yr now but the retailers is our making me wait... The price is $249.99? so why would I want to pay the bundle for around $500-$600. If I was going to throw that much money for a game machine I would of got a PS3 Nintendo has the opportunity to really take off but there taking baby steps. Giving Sony and Microsoft opportunity. Nintendo its almost like your helping the retailers take advantage of us, the gamers... C'mon your machine has been out for a year now:-(
