Nintendo NX Is Portable, Has Detachable Controllers and Uses Cartridges - Report

New report suggests the rumors are true, and Nintendo's NX will be a hybrid device.

Nintendo's next gaming platform, codenamed NX, will be a portable console that has detachable controllers, a new report has suggested.

According to Eurogamer, "a number of sources" have confirmed the NX will be a powerful handheld device, but that it also has controller modules that can be attached to both sides of its screen.

Now Playing: GS News Update: Nintendo NX Report Says It's Portable, Has Removable Controllers, Uses Cartridges

The system can also be connected to a docking station for use on a big screen. This base unit effectively connects what is described by Eurogamer as the "brain of the NX" (housed within the portable device) to a TV.

It continues on to state that the NX will use cartridges as its physical media of choice. Nintendo has a long history of using cartridges for its portable gaming devices. It is unclear what capacity these cards will be available in. Modern games on PS4 and Xbox One can store up to 50 GB of data, and many often require further installs on their internal hard drives.

The NX will reportedly run on a proprietary operating system designed by Nintendo, and not Android, as was suggested by previous reports.

The NX was first officially revealed in March 2015 and, before his passing, company president Satoru Iwata called it a "brand new concept" for video game platforms.

Nintendo hasn't publicly talked about the hardware in an official capacity, but the leading rumor lines up with this report. It posited that Nintendo is seeking to unite its handheld and console efforts. Multiple reports previously suggested NX will include a traditional living room console and "at least one mobile unit."

More recently, Nintendo confirmed the NX's global release date is in March 2017, but did not provide any more information. It indicated it is holding back on a premature reveal in order to protect a unique element of NX.

"In terms of NX, there's an idea that we're working on," said Shigeru Miyamoto. "That's why we can't share anything at this point, and I don't want to comment on the other companies. If it was just a matter of following advancements in technology, things would be coming out a lot quicker."

Lots of Nintendo haters on here. This is a great idea that will combine mobile and home gaming. This is an attempt at being a real system targeting gamers and not a fad like the Wii. Unfortunately it looks like my hopes of it being backwards compatible have just gone up in smoke. And screw the 3rd party support, they have never had it and never will.

It'll probably use Tegra X2 in the main mobile unit, plus another Tegra X2 in the docking station. I'm also imaging that the cartridge port will be some bastardized version of a PCI-E interface for high-bandwidth transfer rates between the games and the CPU/GPU cores. Which could also act as a dumbed-down version of PC SLI when you slap the handheld into the docking station via the cartridge port. All just speculation, but that's the only method I can see as providing a usable boost of power.

Sounds like another gen of no third party support. If they're not going to make a normal console, devs won't bother porting over their multiplats and it will just be Nintendo making games for it. A game would need to be developed as an exclusive for the NX to make sense, but unless Nintendo moneyhats the dev, the install base won't be there and no one will bother. Why make a game for one platform, when you can make a game that can easily be ported to 3 different platforms (PC, XB1, PS4)? It makes no financial sense to make 3rd party NX games unless they're low budget titles like 3DS games.

The Tegra X2 chip has not been officially unveiled by Nvidia yet. They will not do this until August 22.

My guess is that the reason Nintendo is being so quiet about NX details, is because they plan to utilize the X2 chip.

There's no way that Nvidia would allow Nintendo to unveil a product utilizing the chip that they themselves have not announced yet.

Well, it's very reasonable to avoid competing head to head with powerhouse specs, so I'm interested in seeing what Nintendo can bring this time. If the Neo and Scorpio are too far ahead in development by then, then Nintendo will have a good space in between to profit from whatever they're hiding.

Sure sounds like another stupid attempt at create something "truly innovative". Maybe it'll finally break Nintendo's neck.

Perfect move for Nintendo, aim at the market they have been winning for decades, for people with no interest in handhelds move along this isn't aimed at you.

Nintendo is aiming at the Japanese market, in 5 years the 3ds has sold over 58 million units world wide, over a third of those were in Japan, If they can release it at a reasonable price and hopefully with BC with the 3ds it will sell millions in the first month, if they release a Monster hunter and a rpg Pokemon title near release as well it will become an unstoppable force.

This looks to be a disastrous move by Nintendo and I'm almost certain if this doesn't sell massive numbers, then it's all over for the company as far as hardware goes. I just don't see the mileage in something like this anymore. I agree with everyone else here in that all Nintendo had to do was throw out a powerful console and that would have satisfied the Ninty fan base and some other casual gamers but I don't think they would make a dent to the kind of figures PS4 and XBox1 have generated this time around. Absolutely no chance there.

Secondly, it's the lack of games. Nintendo just cannot continue to milk the Zelda/Mario shit any more. They just can't. They have to open up the software market to other developers to jump on board but that's going to require something worth investing in and I just can't see that happening either. Looking at the long term forecast, It's not looking good for Nintendo.

This actually sounds like the perfect console for me since my working place is about 2 hours away from where I live going by train. And while I use my smartphone or my 3ds already to pass the time on the train having a console I can have portable and, comming home, can plug into my TV sounds really interesting.

I just hope that the battery life is good, that might make or break the console.

Hey you know what? took me a while, but I think I can come around. I had my own ideas of what I wanted from a ninty console, But I guess what I really want, is some fun games. I, like many other people, feel like you abandoned wii u and its really lacking in games. Sure, there are some great ones but its not enough. So I just hope that you guys at nintendo really put it in to gear and send out a bunch of good games, and encourage 3rd parties to do the same. I think if you manage to do that, I will be fine with that

In some ways this could work out great, its great specs for a handheld, better than Wii U while at home(not saying much), and Nintendo could stop developing for two different platforms.

@glevans: I think people are going to have to accept that's just never happening again. Nintendo will never again compete, or try to compete, on a hardware parity basis with Sony and MS. That's over. Don't look for it.

Whether one likes or dislikes what they do instead, is another matter obviously.

@anonymous81: The other question is how long can they keep it up? It's highly unlikely casuals will buy into Nintendo devices when for them mobile just blows Nintendo away completely. Mobile is way way way more multi-purpose, more integrated, much cheaper software, etc. etc. the advantages go on and on. It's only going to get worse with stuff like Google Play's Family sharing system rolling out right now that let's you buy an app once and share it with I think 6 devices.

The other problem is just plain brand and IP, Nintendo's ain't special anymore. A lot of kids now don't care or know about Nintendo's IP, it's not the automatic winner it used to be. You often hear people say Minecraft is the new Mario, it's funny but also somewhat accurate.

Sounds disappointing, to me at least.

I don't like playing games on a gameboy (haven't really played in years). I want to play games on my 50" tv.

I enjoy the Mario games (Bros, 3D, Kart, Smash, etc) and like Pokken as well. But want them made for normal use, not playing on the go. Not sure I will be buying Nintendo's next system.

@Redgarl: Yeah because when a concept sells good you can just keep selling it forever! Just like... the... Wii U... ohhhhhhh... But I'm sure people will trade in their 3DSes which are nice and portable with their clamshell design, good battery life, and all their digital games that they can't transfer over to the NX for a system that has weird detachable controllers and a tiny library for years before Nintendo finally gets enough games out.

Saying it is a "powerful" handheld device is an understatement. This is nearly as powerful (or just as powerful) as the Wii U, WHILE being portable. This handheld is OP if you ask me. But I think Nintendo should do this in the future. Extremely powerful handheld consoles that can play some home consoles too.

handheld devices are not judged as harshly as home consoles (except the Vita, oh boy what a flop), so it'll be easy for Nintendo. And since it is a portable console, it will live twice as long as home consoles. It will have the usual handheld games with usual handheld graphics, but it will also have "blockbuster" titles such as the new Zelda.

It might not have the big games PS4 and XB1 are getting, but it will have some other use. And developers might even use it as some "special" platform since Nintendo won't be competing against Sony and Microsoft (like mobiles are currently being used as "special" platforms for small games and whatnot).

But these cartridges must be huge in space. Just Dance 2016 is 21.7 GB, and Ubisoft said they were going to release their next Just Dance on the NX. So it means that the cartridges should be around 30+ GB in capacity (I am not saying that the next Just Dance will be 30 GB, but there are other games that are bigger than Just Dance).

And what about internal storage space then!? I hope that if it does have it, it will be better than the Wii U's 8 GB and 32 GB for the deluxe model. That was bad...

Wait, didn't Shigeru Miyamoto said it was also VR capable (based on an article from GameSpot)? Well, this handheld is definitely OP as heck.

@kaminobenimizu: That's why this is worrysome. How is the NX going to be less expensive than the Wii U? It should be $300-$400 which is insane, ask Sony about that price range for handhelds. Also the the console could be big and heavy to carry around, which would hurt its portability. I doubt it will fit in your pocket. I don't see parents getting this for their kids do to high cost and lack of portability. Outside of Japan, where does this make sense?

@csward: Ummm. I am not following tech news, but I think that by now, the pieces to make a Wii U (or something equal in power) are pretty cheap compared to how much they cost back then. But I could be wrong, so that's already 1 (maybe). I've heard that they become "obsolete" quite fast.

Example:The PS4/XB1 uses pieces that are considered "weak", and they were more advanced than the pieces used for the PS3/360/Wii U. Well, from what I've heard. So if Nintendo was to use pieces to make a device equal to the Wii U again, it should be cheap right now. Maybe in the $200-$300 (wait, wasn't the Wii U already $300?).

Since it is a powerful portable device, it might be used for a longer time by Nintendo and 3rd parties that are interested in creating software for portable devices that are powerful, but might not want to go into the PC market. So people won't be "out of the loop" by getting it maybe 5 years into its life cycle. In this sense, it could be seen as some long lasting device. No problem paying $200-$300 for a device that might last at least 10 years (well, I HOPE it's what they are aiming for in the portable scene). Plus it seems it'll have other gimmicks and unique things (I hope it will...) without screwing up since it's marketed at those who are into portable devices instead of home consoles.

Actually, it might well be a "gaming tablet". So it might be seen as a "neutral" platform by developers in the long run. That's what it sounds like so far. A tablet with cartridges...? Heh.

Depending on how it is made, how it is advertised, and IF they can get 3rd party support, it could be their last flop (what kind of company could possibly survive 2 flops!? Okay, Sega sure managed to do a crapton of them, but I think Nintendo won't tolerate a second flop in a row), or a moderate success.

@kaminobenimizu: This could surpass Wii U depending on clock rates and RAM. Basically we have to wait for more details but the rumors so far put it above Wii U but there's a chance it'll be underclocked due to things like battery life.

@ArabrockermanX: Actually, I did a mistake and called it a handheld. It's not because it is portable it is a handheld (laptops being portable but not handhelds for example)... 0_o

But I hope it ends up quite good. And considering Ubisoft's reaction to the Wii U (and earlier in the Wii U's life cycle at that) and now seeing they actually like the NX before it is released means it might end up getting support some way or another (they might create things for the NX like they did for the Wii).

Breakable lost parts goes really well after Wii U a family console packed with one touch screen controller that kids could fight over who got to use it! Just brilliant Nintendo ???

That is fine just FFS have the damn screen be bigger and use up more of the controller, seriously so many of the games at times force the Wii U controller screen and the damn thing could easily be 25% bigger.

i'm actually excited. the one thing i hated about the 3ds and vita was that there was no connection to the TV. so now you have a system that is probably stronger than a ps4 thats portable and can hook up to the TV. i look at this as a gameboy upgrade more than a wii u upgrade.

@Mr-GameCast: They said they wouldn't go against the PS4 or XB1 at all. So it might be stronger than the Wii U (which is about as strong as a PS3/360). But I don't think it'll be as powerful as the PS4 or XB1, let alone even more powerful. Besides even if it was more powerful, it would be nearly meaningless considering Sony and Microsoft are releasing their buffed Neo/Scorpio versions. So even if the NX ended up more powerful than both the PS4 or XB1, it would be seen as a weak piece of tech like the Wii U was.

But as long as a console can at least run Unreal Engine 4, there should be no problem (from what I've heard, the Wii U can, but barely).

It's good to see Nintendo go back to their "you can see handheld games on TV" mood. I liked that a lot when it was done on the GameCube (the GBA screen is freakin small too...).

@Mr-GameCast: If it is portable, it is not stronger than a PS4, power and cooling requirements would pretty much negate that as a possibility.
