Nintendo President Wants To "Create Smiles" And Not Only With Games

Nintendo of America President Doug Bowser wants people to see Nintendo as more than a gaming company.

For decades, Nintendo has introduced a string of iconic characters that have transcended their video game spaces and become pop culture icons. From television to movies to their own theme parks, Mario and friends have become a merchandising machine--something the company has understood for some time now, and what Nintendo of America president Doug Bowser wants to continue.

"Going all the way back to our origins in 1889, we were all about entertainment. We started out as a manufacturer for playing cards...through our history, we've had various interactions of gameplay. Whether that's toys, bowling alleys, a whole host of things," he said on MSNBC. "Now? Absolutely. Video games are at the core of our entertainment experiences, but we've also learned that these characters and these worlds have the ability to step beyond the video game environment."

He was asked if Nintendo was "coming after Disney" with this kind of approach. Bowser didn't see it that way, but wanted to state the company's important mission statement.

"In the end, our mission is to create smiles. Very simple, very straightforward. The strategy that we utilize for doing that is to increase the number of touchpoints that consumers can have with our characters and worlds," he added. "So movies, theme parks, other out-of-video-game experiences continue to create those touchpoints. If people then want to come into our gaming ecosystem and be a part of that? We welcome it."

When asked if we should see more live-action adaptations, movies, and physical attractions, Bowser said the trends that we see now will continue.

"There's a lot of this that will be coming over the years to come."

Back in 2016, then-president of Nintendo Tatsumi Kimishima had the same mentality when it came to presenting Nintendo to the world. "We want to have everyone become familiar with our IP by reaching as many people as possible from an early age within their daily lives," he said. "Our long-term strategy is to spark our consumers' interest in playing Nintendo game systems and encouraging continued growth of our games business."

However instead people see Nintendo as a legal bully who sue people dilly-dally more than your average American lol. I know their video games are rubbish therefore they may not sell well but it doesn't justify suing people just for profit. :DDD

@guitarwarrior66: not if some people put up a patreon for emulators to play the latest game for free with the latest version of said emulator via donations.

@mooglestar: Rich people feel happy as they waste tons of money. When you know that you can profit despite your price is obviously a scam. Video games are a luxury therefore naturally the target audience is rich people so it would be nonsense to don't raise the price tag of video games to even $300. If you are poor you already look for high discount anyway, you don't have to preorder. However a part of rich people behavior is paying high price just because it's high price, they feel sad when they care about price and compare which price is lowest and whatnot economical common sense behavior. :DDD

Oh come on. I know it's all part of the PR you have to present, but literally the only thing Nintendo cares about is making money. I have seen few companies so devoted to it. Making great games just happens to be a great way to do that, so they do it. Crapping out crappy Pokemon games is also another way to do it so they do that too. As is having the most aggressive lawyers to 'bring smiles' by shutting down fan projects. If he were honest it would be 'Create Dollars (and Yen)'.

@oldtaku: Of course a company will care about profit because money is their blood therefore without money they can't exist. But there are lots of ways to make money so when you judge a company you gotta question why they are in a specific industry instead of another industry. They could sell drugs, weapons, could become a terror organization dilly-dally drop atomic bombs but they choose to remain in video game industry then you gotta realize they "care" to develop video games and video game consoles but they can do nothing without money naturally.

Where you see "fan projects" you gotta realize fan projects ruins the unfair business for the company to use their own ideas to make money so they can exist. Company making money matters a lot for the country's economy to bloom than self-satisfaction of fans and fans' fans lol. I agree Nintendo is silly who even sues random person in a random country whose name is Mario for his shop's name is "Super Mario" but you gotta agree of course Nintendo has the right to sue when people make money from Zelda fan movie projects when Nintendo already developing Zelda movie at home.

Well if Nintendo really cares about smiles with high price tag then they better care about actually improving their video games because in last decade all they do is doing very minimum work with high profit expectation. Pokemon games didn't basically improved since the first video game. Only significant change is now your character's cloth can change. As for Zelda games, they just steal from other video games. BOTW and TOTK is some Terraria rip-off without actually using the concept's potential. IDK about Mario, I have no idea how they literally puke lots of digital Mario rubbish when it's all about some dude jumping but the thing about Japanese people is they love things being same so they have no sense of improvement. Without colonization Japanese people would still walk everywhere and use katana while wearing curtain-like dresses. Nintendo knows how Japan is "frozen in time" hence their video games are "frozen in time". Can't blame a company for their target audience lol.
