Nintendo Surprise Launches One of the Best Rhythm Games of All Time

Rhythm Heaven Megamix launches today as a digital download on the 3DS eshop. However, Mother 3 is still unavailable.

In an announcement that really, really should have been; "Mother 3 is now available worldwide," Nintendo instead closed out its E3 2016 presentation with the release of Rhythm Heaven Megamix.

Not to belittle the excellent Rhythm Heaven, which, along with Rock Band and Elite Beat Agents, represents one of the greatest music game franchises of all time, but it's not Mother 3.

Now Playing: Rhythm Heaven Megamix Minigame Showcase at E3 2016

Rhythm Heaven Megamix culls together over 100 musical minigames, combing new tunes and returning favorites from previous games. The digital-only title is available today on the Nintendo 3DS eshop for $30. Which would also be a fine price for a game like Mother 3.

Nintendo eschewed a traditional E3 press conference this year to focus on live, day-long stage shows. The company also announced a new 3DS RPG called Ever Oasis during its presentation today. However, when you think about it, the best way for the developer to close out E3 really would been a with a surprise announcement and release of Mother 3, a game that turned 10 years old last April.

Oh, I was under the impression the game hadn't been officially translated by Nintendo....

Sorry I was not confused, as I know it is not. Dude, there are plenty of ways to play it translated. Do we really NEED to play it digitally on the 3DS or WiiU....no I don't think so.

I'm more than happy to play my JPN copy on a Retron 5 with English patch, like most normal people, apparently you not included.

Don't get me wrong, this title is great, but Nintendo is sooo out of touch with what gamers really want.

Wow -- I don't normally bitch about bad articles around here, but this one really takes the cake. At least sandwich it with [OPINION] headers when it's NOT news... in the news feed.

I don't blame you for wanting Mother 3, Justin. Earthbound's an amazing game. The SNES game was not only set in a modern day world, but also drew inspiration from current events. Even though Nintendo has a habit of avoiding directly saying certain things, MatPat did a video and showed that it was pretty dark for Nintendo game. Mother 3 is darker than the SNES game.

Super happy for Rhythm Heaven, its a game that deserves it thanks to its awesome acceptance from gamers. I love these games to death. Its a game for the whole world. Its also a game thats great to show off thanks to its amazing simplistic style and catchy tunes. Also got another BoxBoy!, which is awesome!

Its a shame not many sites are talking about Grezzos new game, dude is a legend with all the amazing games hes worked on. Im mean, Final Fantasy series, Secret of Mana series, and many others.

@iandizion713: The issue there is that, unlike Zelda, Nintendo kind of cut us off from coverage. Everybody got to check it out the same way, by watching the stream. So no one here got to play it, ask questions, or really do anything beyond what Nintendo showed on the stream.

Really excited to dig in once they give us the chance, though.

@justinhaywald: Yeah that does suck. Would have been easier if Nintendo had gave sites more info.
