As part of the Nintendo Direct, Nintendo finally announced the release date and price for the Nintendo Switch 2. The system will launch on June 5. The system will be sold on its own, as well as in a bundle with the newly revealed Mario Kart World. A price was not shared as part of the Direct, but a US price was shared in a press release afterward: $450 for the system or $500 for the MK World bundle. Preorders begin in North America on April 9. In the UK, it'll cost 395 GBP, while in Europe it'll cost 430 EUR.

A June release for the Switch 2 was previously reported. For comparison, the original Switch launched in March 2017, priced at $300.

Now Playing: Nintendo Switch 2 – Official System Overview Trailer

As it just so happens, today, April 2, was also the day that US President Donald Trump's new set of tariffs are going into effect. Trump already established a 10% tariff on Chinese exports back in February, later doubling that to 20% in March. Nintendo historically produced some of its products in China, leading some to wonder if the Switch 2 would be impacted.

Whether or not new tariffs had any impact on the sticker price for the Switch 2 announced today is unknown. After all, Nintendo shifted production of new Switch consoles to areas outside of China more than a half-decade ago, long before the current Trump administration's trade deals went into effect. During Trump's first presidency, tariffs did not apply to video game consoles because console manufacturers successfully lobbied the government for a special exception.

The release date and price for the Switch 2 were some of the many announcements from the Nintendo Direct. Be sure to check out GameSpot's news roundup gallery below to see all the biggest news and reveals.

Just had to throw something about Trump in an otherwise, unrelated topic, huh? Rent free! It would have been around this price range regardless of tariffs or not. It is a more powerful, 4k Switch. What did you think it'd be priced at?

That's really not bad considering Nintendo is the only console worth buying anymore (sadly), but that's just my opinion. We'll see if it sells or not.

@teddytabs: No, but they aren't so different anymore. If a console like the PS5 becomes completely redundant if you have a strong PC, then you could argue the PS5 is actually a walled garden PC.

@Tiwill44: The state of PC right now isn't that good as of this moment (Amd is doing well), there is pros and cons with both but overall console is cheaper and people can't build a equivalent for the same price of the PS5/PRO, plus people don't have the patience of budda to be waiting year/s for games. I know for a fact most people won't wait for the PC version of GTA6

@teddytabs: yeah, due to tariffs in place in the u.s. by trump and plus the "switch 2" not using a "tegra x1" like the "switch 1" is.

At that price it is a no for me, they better put their games on PC or I think Nintendo will be flopping.

@Slannmage: Trump's implementation of tariffs is creating global market uncertainty which is enough to raise prices. Switch 2 in Japan only $330...So yes.

@Slannmage: not THAT much cheaper.

Switch released in 2017 was $299 US and 29980 yen in Japan, which is $265. That's only $34 difference. Now in 2025, it's $100 difference.
