Nintendo Switch 2 Preorders Delayed Due To Tariffs, But Console Still Releases June 5

The Nintendo Switch 2 is almost here, but customers in the US and Canada will not be able to preorder the console on April 9, as originally expected.

Nintendo Switch 2 preorders have opened in other regions across the globe, including the UK, but it's currently unknown when customers in the US and Canada will be able to purchase the console. On April 4, just two days after announcing a preorder date, Nintendo delayed preorders in the US from April 9 to an unspecified date while it reviews tariffs imposed by the Trump Administration. On the eve of the original preorder date, Nintendo announced the delay now includes Canada.

Here is the full statement Nintendo sent GameSpot on April 4:

"Pre-orders for Nintendo Switch 2 in the U.S. will not start April 9, 2025 in order to assess the potential impact of tariffs and evolving market conditions. Nintendo will update timing at a later date. The launch date of June 5, 2025 is unchanged."

When preorders do eventually go live, the Switch 2 will be available on its own or in a bundle with Mario Kart World. It's unclear if the console and/or the bundle will receive price increases. Nintendo originally announced the console would cost $450 on its own and $500 with Mario Kart World in the United States. Both options will likely be hot commodities. Preorders from Amazon UK for the console and Mario Kart bundle sold out within hours.

Despite the uncertainties surrounding preorders, major retailers have retained store pages for the Switch 2 console as well as first-party accessories and games. First-party games and other Switch 2 exclusives will be available to order in the US when console preorders open. Select third-party multiplatform Switch 2 games are already up for preorder, though, including Daemon X Machina: Titanic Scion.

GameSpot's Nintendo Switch 2 preorder guide will continue to evolve as more product listings pop up and Nintendo reveals its revised plan for North American preorders. In addition to the two Switch 2 console options, you'll find all of the first-party accessories along with pricing details and preorder availability for the upcoming Nintendo Switch 2 games arriving on launch day and beyond.

Editor's Note: All prices for Nintendo Switch 2 hardware and games listed in this story are subject to change. We will update this story with the new preorder date and any adjustments to pricing when we learn more.

Nintendo Switch 2 Release Date & Delivery Times

The Nintendo Switch 2 releases June 5, but when will you actually get your hands on the console if you secure a preorder? So far, the answer to that question is also June 5.

If you preorder from Walmart, the retailer will deliver your console by 9 AM local time on launch day. That's a fairly unprecedented guarantee for a gaming launch.

Best Buy will be hosting a midnight launch for the Switch 2 at many of its locations. If interested, you should check with your local Best Buy and ensure you choose in-store pickup when placing your order online.

Will the Nintendo Switch 2 be sold on Amazon?

The major unknown at the moment is Amazon--and not just when it comes to preorders. There's a chance, and perhaps a good one, that Amazon won't carry the Nintendo Switch 2 in general, or at least not at launch. Amazon is the only major retailer without a mention or Switch 2 banner on its site. When it comes to video games, the retailer's Nintendo store page hasn't been updated in months.

For the past year, the relationship between Amazon and Nintendo has clearly been rocky. Amazon hasn't stocked the vast majority of first-party Nintendo Switch games, both new releases and hits from years past. Perhaps more telling is the fact that Amazon didn't carry the 2024 Nintendo Switch holiday bundles, the Hyrule Edition Switch Lite, or the recently released Super Mario Bros. Wonder Switch OLED console bundle. We've reached out to Amazon to see if it expects to have the Nintendo Switch 2 in stock and will update this story if we receive clarification. If Amazon is planning on carrying the Switch 2, its Nintendo store page will likely update in the coming days.

Nintendo Switch 2 Preorder Bonuses?

Video game consoles typically don't come with preorder bonuses in the same way that games often do, but with Nintendo products, retailers often have exclusive bonuses. These range from practical products themed around Nintendo, such as tote bags and popcorn buckets, to display pieces and little trinkets. One unknown retailer is rumored to have a collectible coin for those who preorder the Switch 2. We will update this article as Switch 2 preorder bonuses are confirmed.

Nintendo Switch 2 First-Party Accessories

All of the Nintendo Switch 2 accessories below, with the exception of the branded microSD cards, are manufactured by Nintendo. The first-party accessories will be available to preorder when console preorders go live, and the vast majority of them will be carried by major retailers. Best Buy, Walmart, and Target have store listings for many of the Switch 2's accessories.

No Caption Provided

Arguably the most notable official Switch 2 accessory is the new Pro Controller, which has a new C button, two remappable back buttons, and a 3.5mm audio jack. Nintendo also unveiled the Switch 2 Camera, which can be used for the console's new GameChat feature.

If you want an extra pair of Switch 2 Joy-Con Controllers, they will be available to purchase in pairs for $90 or individually for $50 each. Other Joy-Con accessories available at launch include a Joy-Con 2 Charging Grip for $35, a two-pack of racing wheel attachments for $20, and Joy-Con 2 straps (two-pack) for $13. You will only need the straps if you lose the ones that come with the controllers.

Nintendo will also have two official carrying cases at launch: a $35 hardshell carrying case with a screen protector and cleaning cloth and the All-In-One Carrying Case for $90. The former is designed for the handheld with Joy-Con 2 Controllers attached, while the latter is for the console, dock, extra controllers, and cables. If you want an extra Switch 2 dock for another room in your house, a Dock Set with an AC adapter, USB-C cable, and HDMI cable will be available at launch for $110.

The Switch 2 has 256GB of internal storage and is expandable via microSD Express Cards. This is a newer, faster form of microSD that is still in its infancy. Nintendo-branded SanDisk and Samsung microSD Express Cards were revealed during the Nintendo Direct. Nintendo-branded Samsung microSD Express 256GB Cards cost $60, but you can use existing microSD Express cards, too. Check out our roundup of the microSD Express cards from SanDisk and Lexar that are available today.

Nintendo Switch 2 Third-Party Accessories

In the coming weeks, you can expect third-party accessory manufacturers to reveal new controllers, carrying cases, grips, screen protectors, and other accessories for Switch 2. Some third-party companies, such as the boundary-pushing manufacturer Dbrand, have been teasing Switch 2 accessories for months. Dbrand is creating a Switch 2 version of its popular (and very good) Killswitch grip case. You can reserve the Killswitch for Switch 2 now. Alternatively, you can preorder Satisfye's upcoming ZenGrip 2 for 20% off with promo code FOUNDER20.

Meanwhile, GameStop has its own range of Switch 2 accessories, including carrying cases, Joy-Con grips, and microSD Express cards--most of which are cheaper than the Nintendo-branded counterparts.

You likely own a few "Switch 2" accessories already

The Nintendo Switch 2 is also backward compatible with Switch accessories such as headsets and controllers--to an extent. For example, your Switch Joy-Con Controllers will work in docked mode with the Switch 2, but you can't connect them to the tablet for handheld mode. Accessories such as your Nintendo Switch carrying case are also unlikely to be compatible with Switch 2. But your Nintendo Switch Pro Controller and third-party gamepads such as the 8BitDo Ultimate Bluetooth Wireless Controller--our top pick for Nintendo Switch--will be compatible with Switch 2 from the jump. Nintendo has published a compatibility list that you can reference for first-party accessories.

Because of the sheer abundance of existing Switch accessories, there will likely be some interesting options to improve your Switch 2 experience at launch. The new Joy-Con don't appear to address one of the more common complaints about the default Switch 2 controllers: ergonomics. As such, grip cases and third-party alternatives for handheld mode will likely be popular this time around, too. Existing controllers like GameSir's G8 Plus could be of interest, as this Bluetooth controller is compatible with Switch and tablets of up to 8.5 inches. It will certainly be able to cradle the Switch 2, and we'd be surprised if it isn't able to connect to the console.

Nintendo Switch 2 Game Preorders

Mario Kart World
Mario Kart World

GameSpot will be creating dedicated preorder guides for all Nintendo Switch 2 launch games with physical editions as well as every major title for the platform that's slated to arrive in the months following launch. We're keeping a running list of confirmed Switch 2 games below and will add pertinent details such as price, preorder bonuses, and editions to choose from.

Prices for Nintendo Switch 2 games, including first-party exclusives, vary by title. For instance, Mario Kart World has an MSRP of $80, while Donkey Kong Bananza--a brand-new 3D adventure in which Donkey Kong wears pants and smashes stuff--will be $70 at launch.

Enhanced versions of Nintendo Switch hits like The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom and Breath of the Wild will cost $80 and $70, respectively. Kirby and the Forgotten Land + Star-Crossed World as well as Super Mario Party Jamboree + Jamboree TV will retail for $80 each, though both of these games will benefit from new playable content in addition to performance enhancements. If you own any of those games on Switch 2, a paid upgrade path will be available.

Third-party pricing appears to be highly variable, too. The HD Remaster of Bravely Default, one of the best RPGs on Nintendo 3DS, will only cost $40. Street Fighter 6, meanwhile, will cost $60 and features new in-game content and existing DLC.

Nintendo Switch 2 First-Party Games + Exclusives

The Switch 2 will also have an exclusive Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack membership perk: a selection of GameCube games. A handful of titles will be available at launch, including The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker, Soulcalibur 2, and F-Zero GX. Check out our roundup for the full list of confirmed GameCube games that will land on Switch Online at launch and beyond.

  • Final Fantasy 7 Remake Intergrade - June 5

  • Starseeker: Astroneer Expeditions -- 2026

This list is developing...

Zelda and Street Fighter Amiibo

Nintendo is also releasing seven new Amiibo figures on launch day. Four Champions from The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom will finally get the Amiibo figure treatment. Prices have increased from $16 to $20 for these four Amiibo. A figure based on Mineru's Construct will launch at a later date, though we suspect this will be a larger, more expensive Amiibo.

Street Fighter 6, which will be available on Switch 2 at launch, will have three Amiibo figures of its own. The pricing for these is a bit strange, especially since the game itself will be $60. Each of the three Street Fighter Amiibo cost $30, half the price of the game.

I do feel prices will increase, (with information at this time). But like any price increase, Nintendo-> like any mass electronic consumer good, -> will wait until many other industries increase prices at the time same time. This is following price histories for 60 yrs.

Once tariffs, like taxes, get baked in it is nearly impossible to get rid of, just acclimated to. Decreased features, cheaper materials, worse manufacturing, etc. will be the future of any electronic good under taxation. Materials will get higher, labor will get more expensive, reciprocal taxes will cause - products will Like food, cars, hospital equip, even services... all to go higher to adapt.

Industries will all raise prices at once, even if they do not have to.

The worse part is how hard it is to get rid of a tariff or tax. Just because one country decides to, doesn't mean the other will remove theirs at the same time. Who budges first. And once these get baked in, manufacturers are less likely to drop prices until they know it will favor their profits. Often times, it is safer to just wait and see.

Gonna be a rough road ahead.

As a Nintendo fan I have zero interest in getting one. I am on board with the critics.

8 years development for an upgraded Switch 1 (tech wise this is a 2012 device), increase prices by 30-40%, and then remaster Switch 1 games to Switch 2 editions.

@ecurl143: If it's a game I want enough, I would. I'm not going to miss out on the stuff I really want to play, but if the average AAA game is launching at $80 or $90 going forward, I'm likely buying fewer new games in a year than I do now.

@mogan: Then you are what is wrong with gaming man, in every sense of the word. There is no reason for anyone to pay that much for a game. I don't care how good or great it looks.

Nintendo should be really boycotted over these prices.

@ceelogreen94: the problem with gaming is the audacity of some people to tell others how, when and where to correctly play their games. Buy the game or don’t. Just quit bitching please…..

@ceelogreen94: I disagree with your opinion. I'm fine spending money on a game I think is worth it, and more expensive games just means those games will need to be that much more interesting to me in order for me to buy them. My overall gaming budget won't change though, so I'll either buy less or buy later.

@ecurl143: Nintendo first party games never go on sale, you generally don't have a choice if you want to play them. That said, if I can get a couple hundred hours out of game then I generally feel like I've got my money's worth.

@ecurl143: Only people who want to play everything right away. It seems, at least to my eye, that games go on sale a lot quicker than they used to. If you're willing to wait a three, four months, you usually won't pay full price.

I have every other Nintendo console, you name it, I have it. 100's of games too. This one, I will NOT be buying. They are trying to push the price of games up, and I will not support it. They are charging for an app to tech you about the console, didn't PS5 do that and was built in for free? How dropping a switch game and getting an enhanced version for free, just like Xbox 360 games on the Series X console, oh no, Nintendo is charging you for that too.

You're also getting into Series X/PS5 range in the pricing of the console but, it's maxes out docked at 4K 60fps. So, you're in the price range but, you can't even keep up with the other consoles that have been out for years but, you're charging almost as much?

This console I will get but, like a year from now, when it's $300 and when Nintendo learns you're not going to sell a billion games at $80 a pop and drops them down to $60.

And a big one, Every Nintendo system was annouced with a New Mario game, maybe a few months out but announced, Nothing here, not even a rumor. I buy a Nintendo console for Nintendo games, not 3rd party games.

Nintendo was to be a family friendly console but, at these prices, not any more....

This console will sell ok but, nowhere near where the switch did and it's in the pricing.

@sakaixx:Well a global trade war is going effect everyone, even if was just started by one idiot. So the price of the game is the price of the game and it comes down to two simple choices. Deal with it or pass on it. Its no ones fault but Trumps, so the outrage toward companies who have no choice but to navigate it is ridiculous. Should companies give away their products at massive losses because of Donald Trump?

@Sepewrath: Nintendo is 100% at fault, as much at Trump for raising prices for outside of USA. This is just greed at work.

Nintendo able to price its Switch 2 games back in its home country at $60-$65. No reason why it somehow had to raise price everywhere else. Situation is still similar its china or vietnam exporting its manufactured goods back to japan, europe, asia. Rest of the world havent introduced any new protective tariff against those exporting countries to justify a new cost. This is just nintendo taking full advantage of unfortunate events in USA to price games more expensive worldwide.

@Sepewrath: No, most of us did NOT vote for this. He did not win 50% of those who voted nor was there a 100% turnout. What he did was win with roughly a third of the vote in a very, very close race (his percentage over Harris was the smallest since the 2000 election). Let's stop perpetuating his win as something definitive and that is was a mandate of the people, there was a lot of luck involved.

@ceelogreen94: Are you sure? Trump is going to put a tariff on chips soon, specifically Taiwan(for now), where most semiconductors are produced. This will greatly affect Nvidia, intel, AMD, and others since they rely heavily on Taiwan. PCs are certainly not immune. BTW, it wasn't my vote :(
