Nintendo Switch Added A Ridiculous Number Of Games This Week

It's been a busy week for Nintendo's new console.

It's been an unusually busy week for Nintendo Switch. Following yesterday's huge batch of Eshop games, another pair of titles is now available for the console, bringing this week's total number of new releases up to 18.

Headlining today's pair of releases is FIFA 18, the latest installment in EA's long-running annual sports franchise. Unlike its PS4, Xbox One, and PC counterparts, the Switch version of FIFA 18 doesn't run on the Frostbite engine or include The Journey mode, but we still found it to be a fairly feature-rich and competent port when we went hands-on with the game back at E3 2017. FIFA 18 retails for $60/£55.

Today's other new release is One Piece: Unlimited World Red Deluxe Edition, an enhanced port of the 2014 title for PS3, Vita, Wii U, and 3DS. Unlimited World Red is an action-adventure game that lets players play as Luffy and other members of the Straw Hat pirates. The game features an original storyline, new and familiar characters, and a variety of quests and bosses to take on. The Deluxe Edition also includes the full slate of DLC that was released for the game. You can download One Piece: Unlimited World Red Deluxe Edition from the Eshop for $40/£55.

These two games follow the 14 titles that arrived in the Eshop yesterday, including the charming golfing RPG Golf Story, the "negative-space" shooter Inversus Deluxe, the fantasy rhythm game Deemo, and many others. Before that, the first in Nintendo's line of classic arcade ports, Arcade Archives: Mario Bros., made its debut, while Grasshopper Manufacture's acclaimed shoot-'em-up Sine Mora EX launched at retail and in the Eshop on September 26. You can find the full list of this week's Switch releases here.

@timmyp1982: I wouldn't go so far as to consider it that but I'd at least give them the benefit of the doubt though lol

They can release as many games as they like for this toaster. There's still only ever going to be ONE game to play on it.

@kaminobenimizu: Wait, Chibi-Robo 4?!? There was a spin-off on the DS that barely got release in the U.S. (Wal-Mart exclusive?) Not sure if it was any good, but beyond that...?

I loved the graphics and idea of the first game, but it was too frustrating as I recall...but I'd certainly be up for more!

Oooooh right, the 3DS game! I OWN it but forgot about it LOL (Backlog!...I own more than...well, probably close to 100 unplayed 3DS/Vita/DS games LOL)

@wolfpup7: Oh right! There's 1 on GC, 2 on DS (1 being Japan exclusive), and 1 on 3DS (which I forgot). So Chibi-Robo 5 it would be, and localization of Chibi-Robo 3.

The first on GC was very slow paced and barely had fights. The goal was to get 100% after the final boss.

The 2nd is where you have to take care of a garden.

The 3rd is where you are in a house again. I've heard you were the robot of the girl with a frog costume in the 1st game, now an adult.

The 4th one is the platformer on 3DS.

@kaminobenimizu: I'm skeptical about how well the DS could pull those off, but still wish the second one had gotten a release too! I can't believe the real, full games that get passed over in the U.S. (and sometimes in favor of IMO much shallower stuff I have no interest in).

@wolfpup7: Nintendo is open depending on the potential of a franchise.

They did localize 3 Wii games due to a petition (Pandora's Tower, Last Story, and Xenoblade). Well, they did have an European release after Japan, but they never planned a North American release. Then again, they still ignore Earthbound fans, despite the fans being active and Citizens of the Earth being well received as well. Ummm... Nintendo is inconsistent...

@kaminobenimizu: Yeah, I'm glad they at least brought those over. The Last Story was the only one I cared about (and even still it's no Lost Odyssey/Final Fantasy...but still good). But IMO it's nuts to be sitting on real, full games that take a ton of effort to make, and not even let third parties localize them! It's not like the Wii (or Wii U) has too many (good) games.

I can't believe Mother 3 got released in Japan...and nothing.

Pretty good week, nothing too thrilling. Beginning of the classic titles with Mario Bros is probably most exciting, just because it means more classic games will keep coming little by little. Golf Story would look awesome if I liked Golf. One Piece is probably the only thing i'll pick up besides Mario Bros, because I have yet to play a One Piece game and why not start with the Switch.

Some developers wanted to dismiss it at first but the fast-growing install base made they think otherwise.

@netiger: They were careful because of the Wii and Wii U. As long as the ports are not very inferior, it won't be seen as a negative.

@rarerichz: Developers still received a lot of backlash because of inferior versions that were PS2 ports (an example would be Marvel Ultimate Alliance that is literally the same version with an altered code to block Moon Knight and Colossus on PS2 but can be unlocked by glitching) most of the time.

NOTE:I am not saying MUA (PS2/Wii) was bad, but that not many could do well on the Wii despite it selling many units. Well, non-Japanese developers. As the best titles came from Japanese developers mostly.

Even if the Wii was a success due to casuals, doctors, and curious gamers (not many), developers still had a hard time with it due to it being slightly superior to a PS2 only. Which led them to be wary of the Wii U. Along with most gamers that expected developers to skip the Wii U.

Nintendo was very lucky with the Wii. Had it not charmed casuals and doctors (they really helped boost sales), they would have been defeated easily, like with the Wii U (which was useless to doctors since the Wii was still used, and casuals didn't notice it was another console).

The Switch is seen differently because many saw it as a successor to the 3DS, had they seen it as another home console, they would have bashed it like the Wii U all over again. So this time, Nintendo actually planned carefully. Whether haters like it or not.

A portable PS3/360 was the wish of many, and Nintendo delivered. Now all it needs is support from developers doing "remasters" (we could see BioShock or GTA IV and V on Switch), with a few current games (DOOM, Xenoverse 2, or even Dark Souls 3, as they don't seem to require much power), and exclusives (like we saw from R* with GTA Advance and Chinatown Wars). It needs only a few pushes to be really appealing to even more people.

It can easily suit casuals and core gamers since it's a pretty powerful "hybrid" with no forced motion controls.

@timmyp1982: I know, but the million of games are pretty hard to find unless you are extremely dedicated, or use Steam. *Sniffle* And Steam has poor quality control...

Well, Sony too. Have you seen Planet 2000? I knew they had Attack on Zegetta, but still... they better watch it before they become a mere "appstore".

Switch might have less games, but so far, quality control seems decent at least.

@timmyp1982: and barring emulation, none of them are made by Nintendo.

As a PC player of over 20 years, Nintendo is pretty important in video game land.
