Nintendo Switch Data Transfer: How To Move Data To New Switch

Got a new Nintendo Switch? Here's now to transfer your data from the old one.

With so many Nintendo Switch variants available now, including the Nintendo Switch OLED and several special-edition consoles like the Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom system, you may be looking to move your system data from an older console to a newer one. If you're interested in doing so but don't know where to start, we've got all the information you need.

The Nintendo OLED version is available now, and there is a good chance you already own a Switch if you're buying the upgraded version. If that's the case, you'll want to do a Nintendo Switch data transfer so your save data and user information can come with you.

How to transfer Nintendo Switch data to a new system

First, despite the cloud save backup offered by the Nintendo Switch Online service, this isn't the same as having your entire profile and user data stored on the cloud, and a number of games aren't compatible with cloud saves. You also cannot transfer your Animal Crossing islands using this method, but there is a separate process Nintendo has created to allow for this.

The most foolproof way of transferring all of your data to a new Switch is to use the recommended transfer system, which requires having both consoles along with a number of other implements. Follow the steps below.

  1. As detailed on the Nintendo Help site, both consoles will need to be updated to system 4.0.0 or higher and connected to the Internet.
  2. Pick the data management option in the system settings and select to Transfer Your Save Data, then choose to send it on one console and receive it on the other.
  3. If you're planning on using the Switch OLED exclusively from here on out, you'll also want to transfer your user data. To do this, go to the original system, select Users in the settings and then Transfer Your User data.
  4. Click through until you can select "Source Console" and then go through the exact same steps on the Switch OLED, only selecting "Target Console," instead.
  5. Sign in with your Nintendo Account, and the transfer process should start.

If you do plan on using your old Switch, perhaps in another room or as a handheld-exclusive system, do not transfer your user data. Instead, de-register your current console as the primary system on your account and make the Switch OLED your primary console. This will let you keep playing digital games on both systems, provided you are signed in if you are using the older model.

Please update this with the steps for the separate save data transfer process for animal crossing island transfers or there are going to be a lot of sad players out there who recycle their old switches after it’s too late. The cloud backup option in the title screen settings can only be used to upload to a new switch by going through Nintendo support because Nintendo….

This is a terrible article title. Just say it’s complicated instead of “it’s a whole thing”. Not only does that not make sense but it’s terrible grammar. It screams internet blog.

Another complicated option: Trade-in your old Switch for $225 store credit, then buy your old Switch with cash or credit card or debit card and a new Switch with store credit. Take both Switch systems home. Do the transfer and then go back to GameStop and return the old Switch for cash/credit card/debit card refund.

There’s a lot of FUD in these comments, especially from Sony fanboys who have never touched a Switch.

You just flag your original Switch as transferring, then move your SD card to the new console.

That actually doesn't sound all that complicated. I watched a video of how to do it, and it looks like a pretty easy process to me. The only downside is that I'd have to redownload all my stuff again, and even that's not difficult. The only "difficult" part is waiting.

I don't think Nintendo gets the whole "it's easier to encourage customers to buy newer consoles because it's so easy to upgrade" thing.

This is why I'll never buy anything from this company again. Their lack of actual purchase history is downright criminal. If I sell my PS4, I can buy a new one and redownload my games. With Nintendo? Nope.

Why is Nintendo so far behind when it comes to technology? Just have a USB slot and let people transfer their profiles/saves over, how hard is that, seriously? We could do this all the way back with the PS1 with memory cards (not USB obviously, but similar), get with the times already.

@mrdinghat: why spend money to add a part to the board that is made redundant by the fact that everything is downloadable anyways. Also what Jinzo_111887 said about security.

@mrdinghat: Probably don't want to risk exploit via save files like what happened with the Wii.

This isn’t exactly a new thing. I love Nintendo, but I remember when I upgraded from the 3DS to the New 3DS and discovered the same kind of hassle in transferring my files. I had to bring the new console in and the store manager was kind enough to get my old console out of their storage, and we had to go three doors down to a restaurant for WiFi since the particular GameStop’s WiFi was down. Took about three hours. Been happy with the system ever since, but man. What a weird ordeal.

Is there anyway to transfer digital games to the new console, or do we have to actually download every single title again?
