Nintendo Switch Fighting Game Arms Is Deeper Than You Think

GameSpot may receive revenue from affiliate and advertising partnerships for sharing this content and from purchases through links.

Sock 'em boppers.

Nintendo's upcoming limb-centric fighting game Arms is shaping up to be an entertaining competitive experience for the Switch. Its design is simple and intuitive, and excitement creeps in the moment you throw a punch and realize how capable you are. The fact that Arms' characters and environments are infectiously vibrant and cheery doesn't hurt either. While Arms seems like a simplistic brawler on the surface, its mechanics offer a subtle dose of nuance and complexity that makes it far deeper than it initially lets on.

Arms' intricacies are exhibited by the freedom you have to customize your fighter's arm configurations before each round. Before a fight begins, you're given the option to select from three different arms that are exclusive to each character (the full game will allow you to mix and match all signature gloves regardless of the fighter you choose). This opens up a wide range of combinations and strategies based on factors like weight, elemental attributes, and attack styles.

Now Playing: ARMS - New Modes And Characters Gameplay

No Caption Provided

When playing as the ramen noodle-armed fighter Min Min, you can use her Dragon arm's stationary laser attack to hinder your opponent's movement, while simultaneously sending out charged-up jabs from your electric-powered Megawatt Arm to stun and dwindle their health. Or as the dancing green blob Helix, you can opt for two bouncing Blorb arms: one to limit your opponent's vertical mobility, and the other to damage and blind them. With each arm sporting a unique combat advantage, the ability to mix and match is one of Arms' major highlights as a fighting game thus far.

Adding to the complexity of battles are special abilities unique to each fighter. These offer distinct perks to a fighter's attacks or maneuverability options. For example, Helix's elastic body allows him to shrink and stretch at will, making it possible to dodge incoming attacks; on the other hand, Twintelle can slow down enemy attacks or herself in mid-air. These options imbue Arms' combat with an extra layer of strategy akin to fighter matchups from traditional fighting games. In a fight, a specific arm configuration could prove useful, but if you're not careful, it could be easily countered by an opponent's special ability. Case in point: Master Mummy's slow Megaton arms against Min Min's quick, attack deflecting kick ability.

Despite the varying intricacies of Arms' mechanics, the major concern over its viability as a balanced fighting game is the reliability of its motion controls; if their execution is inconsistent in practice, then none of that is going to matter in the long run. Unintentional punches and missteps aren't unheard of in Arms, and while this is excusable for casual players, anyone looking for serious competition will no doubt be dissuaded by mistakes outside of their control. It has been confirmed that the game is playable using traditional controller setups, but it's currently unclear how that will work in practice.

No Caption Provided

Whatever your initial reaction to the game's appearance was, Arms isn't just about about flailing about like a crazy person to win--though you're welcome to try (and lose). Rather, it's about carefully considering which arms to use during a round and how they can be leveraged to defeat your opponent. The motion controls may prevent it from becoming a mainstay of the fighting game community, but its mechanics seem to offer a solid framework that makes it far more involved than most motion-controlled games.

Did they not say that you can play it the traditional way (AKA the non-shit way, with a controller)? If that's the case then the accuracy of the motion controls aren't going to matter much. People are going to have fun with the motion controls regardless, but anybody that is even semi-serious about playing the game well is just going to play it the regular way.

I'm still not sold on this. Only 10 characters are listed in its Wikia page and it doesn't have the depth of a traditional fighter. I think it's still a better value than 1-2-Switch but I also think it's not worth more than $30 personally.

people are really shitting on this game hard. I dont understand why, its such a new game, and a fresh concept. The motion control factor is kind of a bit forced, but there are controls that let you play it normally, so its ok, that better not come up in reviews. If you have an option to turn them off, it doesnt impact the game.

Almost every person in the game has had their arms cut off. I wonder if that was done on purpose like in Star Fox or if they were amputees for other reasons.

@philip_hanan: According to the bit at the beginning of the recent Direct, some people just "woke up" and discovered their arms had become stretchy like that.

This is the type of games that you play when you have no good game to play and just play to pass time. They get bored really fast. The 2vs2 is a nice addition though and I like it. What I don't like is the delayed punching mechanics, which just annoy me even when I watched i on the video. When I have a game like Overwatch to play, all those games just don't matter. Most of the Nintendo Switch games are really gimmicky and lack of depth. It's like buying a toy in toy store, but it's digital and not physical. For kids its great, but for adults it's just a waste of time.

By the way, I generally love fighting games. However, I bought a few of them like Mortal Kombat X and got bored pretty quickly. It those type of games that look amazing on the screen and nice to watch, but are very boring to play after some time. Having a 2vs2 might make it more enjoyable, but I doubt that I will enjoy it more than two weeks after.

For me there is one exception, and this is Super Smash Bros. This brawler game, with improved mechanics and design can be fantastic on the Switch. I hope that Switch users will get this game soon. I love games that are very social, so multiplayer games are my favorite. However, I prefer being able to play as a group against another group than 1vs1. This is why I stay with the PS4, because it provides me with better game experiences. Having said that, if I wanted a mobile console to take abroad and play, I would have bought the Switch, because it's easier to carry and I can play comfortably on my bed.

Let's face it: the only downside of Switch is its low power hardware. The inability to face playstation or xbox on the market is huge factor plus these pretty lame games as a excuse for that. Playing on the go is good idea, but with Skyrim as a star game? Nah...

@Pelezinho777: you have to be seriously clueless if you really think Skyrim is the only star game on switch. The game is literally accumulating the sales mega hit one release after the other and there are already almost 200 titles coming until next year.

Nice to know!

I'm also glad that this game won't force you to use motion controlls - there will be an option to use a game-pad the old fashioned way.

I'm glad they're having a server stress test for this game so people can try it out. I probably wouldn't have given this game a chance.

I'm still not convinced. The motion control novelty died with the Wii. Glad there's an open beta next weekend though

Whaddya bet a charcater from this game will be in the Switch version of Tekken 7?

(No Tekken 7 haven't been confirmed for Switch, but I don't see why it wouldn't in the future. WiiU got TTT2, and Tekken ball mode too, which I am kind of salty about >_> But that is another story).

I don't know how anybody can't think it looks gimmicky but thats not to say it won't be any fun...I'd still add it to my collection but not for 60$; so think I'll wait. Still wish we would hurry up n get some "real" fighters for Switch.. i.e., Soul Calibur, Tekken, MK, Smash Bros! etc.

@d_: so several great neogeo ones don't count? What about sf2 later this month? I can't argue I want smash, but sf2 will hold me over for a bit.

Arms looks fun too, just like splatoon is. So I am looking forward to it, but will be getting it around xmas this year when we get a 2nd switch.

@da_chub: There's nothing wrong with those games but I was talking more along the lines of modern/recent fighting games... I'm sure I'm not alone when I say I had slightly higher expectations for the Switch; so I'm still waiting to see the best it has to offer for every genre.

@adsparky: The recent Direct showed off a number of different modes, which include:

-Standard ranked 1v1

-A singleplayer "arcade mode"

-A "Tekken Ball" like volleyball mode

-A basketball themed game in which the goal is to throw/knock the opponent through the hoop

That's not an exhaustive list, either. Supposedly, you can link up to ten consoles (with two players per console) in online lobbies, and they showed off some local multiplayer (if you don't want to buy in to Nintendo's upcoming online subscription). I had the same worries as you, and that Direct they showed alleviated some of my concerns. Check it out on Youtube if you're interested.

I love fighting games and always will, so naturally I'm curious, but I'm still not quite sure I understand the game enough to know if I'll like it.

This game seems like the sort of title you don't really understand until you get your hands on it

It's a very new IP and a very different concept in the genre.

It looks okish for an afternoon or two with some friends , thats about it.

Theres no way to have a seriously competitive online environment when on top of latency , net codes etc you have motion controls which we all know is not the most precise way to play a versus game ... That ruins the game for me. But thats me

On the other hand it could be fun playing with friends and family for a while etc . Who knows , we need to see more
