Nintendo Switch: Reveal Trailer and All the New Details

Is your body ready?

With only five months to go before it launches a new console in March 2017, Nintendo today finally started to share details about the highly anticipated system. Nintendo published a three-minute video that offered an overview of what people can expect from the platform, which will be called Nintendo Switch. As rumored, it is a console/handheld hybrid that uses cartridges.

In the home, the Nintendo Switch sits in a "Nintendo Switch Dock" that connects it to a TV. You can then lift the system out of the dock and it will "instantly" transition into a portable mode. The detachable controllers that sit on either side of the Nintendo Switch are called "Joy-Con" controllers.

Now Playing: Nintendo Switch Announcement Impressions

You can attach the Joy-Con controllers onto the system itself or a "Grip" accessory, "mirroring a more traditional controller," Nintendo said. Alternatively, they can be used wirelessly.

"One player can use a Joy-Con controller in each hand; two players can each take one; or multiple Joy-Con can be employed by numerous people for a variety of gameplay options," Nintendo said in a press release.

Additionally, Nintendo will sell an optional Switch Pro Controller to use instead of the Joy-Con controllers. Nintendo added that it's possible to bring Switch systems together for local multiplayer.

"Nintendo Switch allows gamers the freedom to play however they like," Nintendo president Reggie Fils-Aime said in a statement. "It gives game developers new abilities to bring their creative visions to life by opening up the concept of gaming without boundaries."

The announcement video shows off how the Nintendo Switch can be played in the home and on the go. This included a look at some of the games, such as what appears to be a version of Skyrim and NBA 2K, as well as The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild and a Mario Kart. Intriguingly, what looks like a new 3D Mario game is also seen.

You can see all of this in the video above. Keep in mind that the games shown are "representative gameplay to demonstrate the liberating nature of the Nintendo Switch home gaming system." Nintendo will show off full game demonstrations and announce launch window titles, a price point, and other specifics about the console before its March launch.

No Caption Provided

Nintendo also shared a list of some of the publishers, developers, and middleware partners that are working with Nintendo on the Switch, including some of the biggest players in gaming like Activision, Bethesda, Bandai Namco, Electronic Arts, Ubisoft, Take-Two, Konami, and Warner Bros. You can see a full list of the initially announced partners here.

The full specs--or a battery life estimate--for the Nintendo Switch have not been announced. However, Nvidia confirmed in its own blog post today that the console uses a custom Tegra processor. "The high-efficiency scalable processor includes an Nvidia GPU based on the same architecture as the world's top-performing GeForce gaming graphics cards," the company said.

"The Nintendo Switch's gaming experience is also supported by fully custom software, including a revamped physics engine, new libraries, advanced game tools, and libraries," Nvidia added.

Additionally, Nvidia said it created new gaming APIs to "fully harness this performance," including NVN, which the company claimed is "specifically to bring lightweight, fast gaming to the masses."

"Gameplay is further enhanced by hardware-accelerated video playback and custom software for audio effects and rendering," Nvidia went on to say.

Yesterday, Nintendo announced that it would release a three-minute trailer for what was known at the time as the NX. While we've known about the NX for quite a while, Nintendo has been stoic on any specific details. Back in 2015, the device was rumored to be a console/handheld hybrid, and speculation suggested the device would use cartridges. Although cartridges are traditionally synonymous with Nintendo's portable gaming platforms, the company's own website had described the NX as its next "home" gaming system.

Prior to today, Nintendo had confirmed only two things: it's slated to launch in March of 2017, and it will be able to play the upcoming Zelda game Breath of the Wild.

Nintendo fan boys will go crazy over whatever Nintendo puts out, be-it trash or not. Wii was great but Wii U was a complete failure. Get lost you fan-boys - your illogical response concerning the Nintendo consoles is disgusting and an insult to the gaming industry. Nintendo's 'new' consoles are not only horrendously under-powered but have very little support from third party developers (as always). Nintendo can absolutely do wrong just like any one of us. They have certainly done it before (wii U)!

Whatever happened to Nintendo just making a regular videogame console without gimmicks? Why would I share one part of the controller with a friend? What game would this idea work for? Stupid.

@SilentAssassin: it seems to work for pretty much all games shown in the trailer. Also devs for the wii u made sure to have gamepad features working for their games, no doubt theyll find a way to make these controllers work.

You can have a Tablet for 99 even cheaper than that, eventually it will not match PS4 or Xbox one in graphics capabilities, it's just the Wii U in a Tablet .

I had to chime in here. First off the 3 hour battery life is depressing. Next this thing is not kid friendly. You have a market dominating handheld...and you make it look like a 100 dallar tablet. Too many peaces...watch a kid under 10 lose a box of crayons. Too small watch a kid eat the joy cons...and watch them get lost under the fridge or in your couch. Then this cheap tablet is gonna get stepped on or drowned in sippy cup juice. Just gave up your main audience...i cant buy this for my daughter shes gonna lose or break it.

Smh all you had to do is take your market dominating handheld give it some controller ports and an hd cable...maybe not skimp the battery life like you did on the switch.

@youareatoe: Why don't put all the games in the iTunes library and Google play and just let the people choose their Tablets instead.

Bottom line for switch

It MUST realoy compete with one and ps4 in terms of games. It shouod have the same titles. Otherwise, only to play mario and zelda it does not compensate to have 2 consoles

Tegra Processor.

I get it. It needs to be a mobile and stationary device. But it simply will NOT compete with the current console sets that are already overshadowing it in terms of raw power.

That being said, with both teams that were previously involved in both the mobile and the console space behind this, there is a chance Nintendo could pull off a miracle.

That being said, Nintendo leaves a lot to be desired when it comes to publisher adoption, future VR advancement, and game selection.

I really hope I'm wrong. I've always loved Nintendo, but this trailer does not inspire confidence that they can right the ship.

@starfox15: Why is everybody assuming that the Tegra will be weak? The original Tegra was much better than the 360 in terms of raw power, and that was years ago. At least wait for the details first.

@n0on3: Tegra X1 was pretty much on par of the 360 in terms of power and games ported to it suffered from erratic fps, low resolution textures, missing effects, etc. It's kinda impossible to compare a console GPU vs a mobile GPU but I highly doubt Tegra X2 will fare much better.

@n0on3: Because.
Its a graphics cards that need to fit into a little tiny screen.

The only reason Xbox 1 and Playstation 4 is larger.. Is because the cpu+gpu takes up space.
That also basicly the only reason PC's are better then consoles today.

Because a GOOD PC required the same space as 2-3 p4 put togather.

@stephaniiiiie: But you also have to remember that the XBONE and PS4 are several years old by now. If you compared GPUs now and then, the newer and smaller RX460 can outperform the older and much bigger GTX 670. Thanks to smaller transistors, I believe that the newer Switch will be able to be as powerful as the XBONE and PS4, though probably not as powerful as their 4K edition.

Looks cool, but nowdays we cannot have 2 game consoles, doesnt make any sense.

All other nintendos were 2nd options - to play fifa, pes, call of duty, gta among others we will need always a strong console like one or ps4

Switch will be a blast if it intends to be your 1st option, otherwise, will keep this ok way

Very impressed. But the games will be the deciding factor on whether to buy it or not for me. I've already played the crap out of Skyrim on PS3 and PC and I'm not a Mario or Zelda fan.

Honestly, watching that trailer makes me think this is *more* gimmicky than either the Wii or the Wii U!! All those different controller options? How easy will it be to lose one component, and then you'll have to buy a full on replacement? Using those tiny little sub-controllers? That's going to be a development nightmare! So you have one controller with n buttons. Now, when you piece part it out, you've got n/2 buttons. How do you make a game that uses all of them...and then 1/2 of them in some cases?!

Seriously more gimmicky than the Wii/Wii U.

Sure...there will be the die-hard Nintendo fans that will go and buy it day/week/month one. But, I'm guessing there won't be a tremendous amount of 3rd party support for it. It'll be an "exclusives" machine...and that's about it.

They'll price this at a $300-$350 price point for the "stay at home" bundle...and then it'll be $100 to $150 for all the components to go "portable". And that's going to kill their up-take on it (of course, their base price will hinder that to begin with).

This will be another "fail" for Nintendo.

@otterbee: What components would it need to go "portable"? I thought they would do it the other way around, with $250-$350 for the "portable" bundle and $100 to $150 for all the components to play at home. I probably wouldn't bring the pro controller everywhere I go, it is too big.

@otterbee: more like another success with 9/10 rated exclusives - once again Nintendo stays on top (even with sluggish sales) between the handheld (doing QUITE well) great exclusives, gimmicky = fine, great soldier on, this is pretty much why Nintendo remains one of the few solid options. And who complains about more control options, if you loose components that is your own complacency/idiocy. Not my problem that I spent LESS then $200 (on the wii U 32gb system) have had ...what 11-12-13 releases all of which I've enjoyed + a New 3DS XL (which I've also paid less then the base $200 price-tag) and have enjoyed thoroughly, with the new Zelda coming up, and this new announcement = which will undoubtedly have sales one way or another (maybe even a peak between March-May-June 2017) + their Trading Card Game (and the Poke GO moniker doing well through their licensing deals w/ Pokemon related products) and then their handheld (its no wonder why Nintendo posted 8.52 billion in software sales between 2009 - 2016 (ranking them #2 in exclusive IP's / franchise sales/quarterly revenue...yes definetly another fail for Nintendo (eye roll).

I hate disc as it breaks easily and also the reader can go bad and as much as i like digital games on PS4 i still miss really owning the game so yes Catridges are awesome.

@vampyren: Yup, it's like comparing the PSPs UMDs to Vita's cartridges:

- Discs can be noisy: PSP and 360
- Discs can cause long loading times
- Discs can break and scratch easily

+ Cartridges can be used to save data on
- Cartridges have limited storage space compared to discs
- Cartridges are expensive to manufacture.

@R4gn4r0k: True , still i don't think the games are going to be to big for todays cartridges as the games are going to be 1080p max and they are more inline with what the games are on say iPads rather then consoles. Switch is ARM based i believe.

Also Being Nintendo i'm sure the game cost will cover the expense of the cartridges. Nintendo games always cost more then other platforms. Of course its not great for us consumers but thats just how it is.

Still l love collecting the games on a nice cartridges :D

i need to get a lot more details on this before i even start to think about purchasing one.

can i lay the docking station on its side (and leave the tablet thing in it without having to remove it to insert games or anything, treating it purely as a console) & put it in the cupboard that holds all my horizontally laying consoles? (No room for it if it can only be left standing up as in the video).

price of games & consoles.

how does it store data & how much of an issue is storage space going to be if its reliant on some sort of sd cards for downloaded content?

i'd like to know battery life but to be honest i don't like handhelds so i'll be buying this only as a home console that will sit in my tv unit cupboard (providing it can be laid horizontally, no room for it if not).

@peter-gareth: hopefully, and it's a faint hope, but it might have 128gb which will be okay ish considering the games won't need to be installed, even if the dock had a HDD that just to me seems to create a lot of problems.

@xxdavidxcx87: Games played off physical media won't need to be installed but what about downloaded games, DLC, Patches etc..?

If games are going to be as big as they are on other platforms then 128gb of storage simply isn't enough & the price of the higher capacity SD cards (Talking about 500gb+) is still too expensive.

Having a HDD in the dock would be nice but doubtful given how the whole point is that you can pick the handheld part up & take your games with you.
