Nintendo Switch With OLED And 4K Output Reportedly Being Revealed This Year

Reports have suggested Samsung will be manufacturing OLED panels for a Switch Pro.

An upgraded Nintendo Switch model featuring an OLED display from Samsung, as well as support for 4K resolution when docked, is reportedly set for a reveal by Nintendo later this year. The model, according to Bloomberg, will be unveiled this year and Samsung will begin mass production of the new seven-inch screen "as early as June." In handheld mode, it will be sticking to a more modest resolution. (We have some requests for a Switch Pro, if it is indeed real.) [Update: Nintendo has officially confirmed a Switch OLED model releasing in October.]

The OLED display panel will output at 720p resolution, according to Bloomberg, which cites people familiar with plans. Nintendo is said to be working to maintain interest around the Switch, as well as continue to sell software competitively against Xbox and PlayStation.

Now Playing: Nintendo Switch Lite - The Pros And Cons

Reports of a more powerful version of the Switch have been floating around for some time now. In January a dataminer noted that a firmware update issued by Nintendo references an upgraded Switch console codenamed Aula. This upgraded model allegedly uses the Mariko (Tegra X1+) SoC chip that was implemented with the Switch Lite and updated 2019 regular model Switches. Additionally, the firmware mentioned support for a Realtek chip, which has been advertised as a "4K UHD multimedia SoC."

The same dataminer noted that it's likely the new Switch's display will not be a higher resolution when in handheld mode, and that the 4K chip may be located in the dock instead of the tablet itself. Bloomberg's reports indicate this could be the case too.

The Switch is now in its fifth year and been a huge success for Nintendo. Sales of the handheld/home console hybrid are nearing 80 million. Its predecessor, the Wii U, only managed a little over 13.5 million in its lifespan.

@nintendians: The mediatek Soc is for 4k video only, and something for N to market as "4k." Judging by the absolutely insane amounts of people that dont realize this, didnt read the article, dont understand that handhelds and 4k are WAY off... Nintendo's misleading marketing WORKS.

@davhidrichards: i'm not saying it's native 4k, it's upscale 4k to look native with dlss.

Let me know when they release a proper Metroid and that's when I'll start Switch shopping. Although, this could turn into, should I buy Metroid for Switch or wait for whatever they come out with next since the Switch would be like 7-8 years old by the time we see a Metroid.

@dmblum1799: I would guess by saying it's a Switch Pro, the idea would be to make sure it can run games in 4K otherwise, what would be the point?

@bdrtfm: I think he means native 4K. If it's just a scalejob of current Switch games, than it's much ado about nothing.

@YukoAsho: How about upscaled 1400/1880 p aka PS4 Pro? Should be fine for Nintendo's cartoony games. You can always play multiplats on PS5/ Xsex/PC.

Can do 4K video but has a 720p screen... That is just sad. I mean the PS Vita back in 2013 had 576p. Though, I guess Nintendo is stuck in their ways of using mobile parts. That Tegra chip is mostly made for you know cellphone mobile gaming.

@nomadie: 4K on a screen that size would not be a noticeable upgrade. OLED will. Definitely excited for 4K output on my tv though.

@aaronlav: uh, 4k especially is noticeable on a handheld. Compare a newer phone to an old 576p phone from 2011.

@G-Corleone: Pixel Density. Pixel Density, also known as pixels per inch, is a measurement of the resolution of digital devices. In other words, it can be defined as the total number of pixels both horizontally and vertically in each square inch of a display.

@firedrakes: Sure, and more pixels within a handheld screen area means more pixels per inch. a 6" screen at 4k will have 6x the pixel density of a 6" screen at 720p. Point is, Nintendo should've at least put a 1440p screen on the Switch Pro, with docked 4k support. Alas, fanboys will keep eating up this mobile Xbox360 with Xbox Series X-priced games.

@davhidrichards: most gaming 4k marketing works. none of it is 4k.

know some one will comment on this. they follow no standard for it what so ever. only industry that does not use it.

Not needed. 4K I use a PC, Series X or PS5. All I care for of any Nintendo products are the awesome games (Zelda, Xenoblade etc), I could not care less if it is 4K Oled or 1080p

@clockworkengine: if you like darker type games and settings (horror games etc). OLED’s technology to represent dark spots is revolutionary, which brings me to another point: most Nintendo games are very colorful , they would look better on QLED, which is where colors are unbeatable.

@phili878: The true black of OLED is exactly what makes the colors so good, especially in the dark. There is no light pollution in the color so everything is flawlessly vibrant. That's why I like Samsung phones so much lol

@clockworkengine: They're also super expensive, which is why Sony dropped OLED from revisions 2 and 3 of the Vita. It's just so far out of character for Nintendo.

@YukoAsho: Perhaps. I will say Sony got what must have been the cheapest OLED displays you could get at the time. Every 1st issue vita unit I've ever played has black splotches all over the screen that can only be seen if you play in absolute darkness and allow your eyes to adjust. And since I love playing in those conditions (in bed, lights out) the 1st gen vita is basically useless to me. If anyone reading this has a 1st gen vita and has never noticed it, try going into a closet or a room without windows and play in the dark for a few minutes. You'll see what I mean lol

Good news for the people who already own a Switch or Switch lite. Why not make such Switch from the start?

@zarpie: The switch has been out for 5 years man. That's an epoch as far as electronics technology is concerned and prices for that technology have dropped considerably. I remember looking into buying a 65" OLED Sony Bravia tv in 2016 and they ran about $6k.... Fast forward to 2021, and I picked up a 65" 4k OLED TV for $2k. Game companies need to release a console at some point, fully knowing their technology will be obsolete as soon as it's released. The switch has had a very good run so far, and this kind of an upgrade would be very welcome for the midlife of the console.

@naydazng7: Well, there's a difference between a pricing strategy and the type of product that a company releases. Zarpie's argument was that they should have started out with an HD switch and, as I pointed out, the technology and components were more expensive 5 years ago. When this rumored new switch comes out, that's when Nintendo should drop the price since they still have to remain competitive as a company and for their shareholders.

The Nintendo Switch is already poised at a price point $100 less than the other two main players in the console space and offers some competitive advantages in its portability, first party library and flexibility. It also appeals more to younger gamers/families than the other consoles by design. Until Nintendo has a new product to replace their old one, they don't have a reason to change their price, from a pricing strategy point of view, especially if the Switch still has robust sales at its current price point.

If this is real, I’ll finally buy a Switch. OLED is amazing (though I would rarely play it in handheld mode), but finally having it up to the resolution of every other console would be nice. That has always been my biggest issue with Nintendo. They make great first party games, but they’re always a generation or two behind when it comes to their tech.

@consolehaven: That is going to be tricky given it's using a mobile gpu. The Devs of games would have to make DLSS work for a mobile device. The only company I know at the moment who has stuff like that is Epic with Unreal 4 Engine now having native DLSS support.
Just don't really see that weak Tegra chip and the mobile cpu doing DLSS.
