Nintendo Switch With OLED And 4K Output Reportedly Being Revealed This Year

Reports have suggested Samsung will be manufacturing OLED panels for a Switch Pro.

198 Comments

An upgraded Nintendo Switch model featuring an OLED display from Samsung, as well as support for 4K resolution when docked, is reportedly set for a reveal by Nintendo later this year. The model, according to Bloomberg, will be unveiled this year and Samsung will begin mass production of the new seven-inch screen "as early as June." In handheld mode, it will be sticking to a more modest resolution. (We have some requests for a Switch Pro, if it is indeed real.) [Update: Nintendo has officially confirmed a Switch OLED model releasing in October.]

The OLED display panel will output at 720p resolution, according to Bloomberg, which cites people familiar with plans. Nintendo is said to be working to maintain interest around the Switch, as well as continue to sell software competitively against Xbox and PlayStation.

Now Playing: Nintendo Switch Lite - The Pros And Cons

Reports of a more powerful version of the Switch have been floating around for some time now. In January a dataminer noted that a firmware update issued by Nintendo references an upgraded Switch console codenamed Aula. This upgraded model allegedly uses the Mariko (Tegra X1+) SoC chip that was implemented with the Switch Lite and updated 2019 regular model Switches. Additionally, the firmware mentioned support for a Realtek chip, which has been advertised as a "4K UHD multimedia SoC."

The same dataminer noted that it's likely the new Switch's display will not be a higher resolution when in handheld mode, and that the 4K chip may be located in the dock instead of the tablet itself. Bloomberg's reports indicate this could be the case too.

The Switch is now in its fifth year and been a huge success for Nintendo. Sales of the handheld/home console hybrid are nearing 80 million. Its predecessor, the Wii U, only managed a little over 13.5 million in its lifespan.

Laughable! The Switch can barely hit 720p without framerate issues on some games and we're supposed to think a Switch 4K is possible based on the same hardware?

@rodster: Rumor has it that apparently a magical Nvidia SoC is in development that uses DLSS, and instead of using something a generation behind like the Tegra X1 was when the Switch came out... They are gonna have to use this magical SoC and it will only use DLSS in docked mode.

I dont believe any of this tbf. The manufacturing costs of a new handheld running on a brand new, unrealeased SoC would be exactly the opposite of what Nintendo has been doing with regard to cost for the past 15 years.

@davhidrichards: I don't believe the rumors either. It's not how Nintendo does things. If they were really coming out with an upgraded Switch, they could have done it with the new Mario red and blue edition and they chose not too.

Nintendo has a track record where they come out with a totally new system with each generation. Now it's possible that the Switch becomes Nintendo's defacto handheld which replaces the 3DS and they come out with a true 4K console. I don't think given the size of the Switch it's possible to jam all that hardware in such a small space just to run 4K.

@rodster: The 4k part is in the docking, well the higher grade stuff can be in the docking station, it doesn't need to be in the handheld itself.

Switch games are pretty much cartoony, so this really makes no sense. Multiplayer games will still play better on other consoles.

I'm highly skeptical. Nintendo never uses cutting edge tech. They always build to a price, and it means cheap screens. I don't think that any mobile processor they will use is going to handle 4K. Again, they will not be going for cutting edge processors, because it's not Nintendo's MO.

OLED is not even necessary. And besides, a 720p OLED screen.. who manufactures those? That is low resolution. It's been a long time since anyone has manufactured 720p OLED displays. It would have been the Note 2 in... 2012?

IT IS A MEDIATEK SOC. It is for playing 4k video ONLY. There has been nothing mentioned anywhere about 4k gaming, as its not feasible and wont be for a decade in a handheld.

@davhidrichards:

There are much better devices people would go to before they go to their Switch for movie watching.

Does the Switch have Netflix/Hulu/Prime/Disney+/HBO etc? It's been a while since I've checked but I don't recall it having those things on mine.

4k with 15 Frames? great. No advantage in Handheld Mode? Doesnt make sense to me. The switch is doing good, why changing? We need BotW 2 or Metroid Prime 4.

I just bought my Switch and were waiting for the Nintendo Direct, if they wanna release a Pro.

@thenewblackfrog: The mediatek Soc is for 4k video only, and something for N to market as "4k." Judging by the absolutely insane amounts of people that dont realize this, didnt read the article, dont understand that handhelds and 4k are WAY off... Nintendo's misleading marketing WORKS.

@davhidrichards: What video do people watch on the Switch? There are so many better players to watch them on, who would choose the Switch as their Netflix streaming service, if it's even available at all (I haven't checked)?

IMO Nintendo should focus on 1080p and 60fps instead of 4K (with less fps)

These leakers are the reason gamers cannot have nice things. It's like someone comes and tells you in March: "hey, your dad is getting you a bike for Christmas."

Frame rate locked to 30, 1080p, but 4k with their new external hardware you probably must pay extra for.

@davhidrichards: let's be real. No one is watching 4K movies on a switch. It's a gaming device. If you're watching movies, you've most likely got a Chromecast, Apple TV, or other streaming box.

@dzimm: SERIOUSLY.

There's been rumors of a "Switch Pro" since the Switch came out! I think this is more wishful thinking than serious reporting. Nintendo isn't going to sell a $400+ system.

I'd buy a second Switch eventually, but 4K really? ...just seems like a waste.

Developers are still going to have to fill their landscapes carefully...it's not the resolution aliasing holding things back, it's the processor. So many games are highly stylized to get around this.

@returnofthebrotha: I think ReturnoftheBrotha means a normal console like the PS5 that only focuses on power and has no "gimmicks" like an additional screen etc. Yes, in docking mode the Switch works as a normal console, but you are still playing a lot for that screen. If Nintendo released a Switch without a screen it would be way cheaper, or extra money could go into more powerful hardware. That would be a "real" console. I am looking for the exact same thing, since I don't like handheld gaming.

@returnofthebrotha: Put that bitch in the dock and it behaves like any home system. It's much more of an actual game system than the Wii was - the gimmickery is nowhere near as overbearing.

@returnofthebrotha: If you don't already know what games then you probably wouldn't be impressed with the list. Let's just say the games from Nintendo's first- and second-party development teams that you can't get on other systems. Their core franchises. Surely you know what I mean.

TLDR: D'oh!

Great console. Ive loved my Switch since day 1. It reignited my love for some of Nintendos best franchises. This is great for people who want all that, but my only gripe with Nintendo is to get the ball rolling on some obvious MIA software. Metroid Prime is so long overdue its insulting. Galaxy 2 is a no brainer. GBC and GBA game libraries with Switch online as well as dozens of N64 games. The Switch cant play high end shit but thats hardly the reason most of us own a Switch. Also Im just gonna still semi pretend to be irritated that I still cant change the backround color. Otherwise one of the greatest consoles Ive ever owned. Nonstop fun playing solo and with friends. Theres just something so awesome about whipping the Switch out on a summer evening hanging with a friend, grabbing a couple beers and playing some retro goodness outside. Its just fun.
