Nintendo's Switch Online Expansion Pack Trailer Is Its Most Disliked Video Ever

It's a-me, ratio.

Nintendo's trailer for its Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack hasn't gone over too well with fans, with the video now holding the record for the most dislikes ever on the company's YouTube channel. The expansion pack trailer's stats which were spotted by VGC--which reveals the tiers and prices necessary to play N64 and Sega games--has almost 120,000 dislikes at the time of writing and a mere 17,000 likes, with a total count of 1.15 million views.

The last time that Nintendo uploaded a video that was so negatively received was in 2015 with its E3 trailer for Metroid: Federation Force, which received over 97,000 thumbs down from 1.5 million views.

Fans have criticized Nintendo's pricing for the individual and family membership packages of the Expansion Pack tier, which costs $50 and $80 respectively for a 12-month subscription. The emulated games on offer lack several features, audio delay is commonplace, and there have even been reports of graphical lag during online sessions.

As for the actual library, it includes predictable heavy-hitters such as Mario Kart 64 and Star Fox 64, as well as more obscure games like Sin and Punishment and the Genesis shooter Musha. We've got a few ideas for the games that we'd like to see added though.

In addition to the retro games, subscribers will also receive the Happy Home Paradise DLC for Animal Crossing: New Horizons when it releases on November 5.

None of this really affects me as I have Dolphin Emulator to play whatever I want so. Pff. Dunno why it is so much to ask for a 1080p 120 fps platform which is bare minimum what I want. No 4k/RTX needed really. Just something that is stable above 70fps... and where i can take my hard copy of Godzilla Unleashed and run it. No?

Okay back to Dolphin then.

I suppose this is a sign that they were not planning a Mini Nintendo 64 after all, or not anytime soon anyway (if they count on this service for their players base to play N64 games... what would be the point of making a Mini N64, I wonder).

@rekonym: There is no point in making a mini N64 when there are only three games worth playing anyway.

Lazy job at bringing us back to some of the best games ever made. Course we're upset with nintendo lol. What a let down. Also... It's not even what we really want!!!

Where's our actual pro model switch? Where's metroid prime 4? Why don't we have better controllers dawg? Stuff like that yo!

Advice to the wise... Want to get into retro 64 games? Hdmi mod your orig n64. Get some brawler controllers. And a everdrive. Best way to experience the old school stuff in a modernish way. It is pricey though sad to say : (

@goldenageplayer: A more cost-effective way to play N64 is to softmod a Wii. Wiis are very common, and easy to come by in thrift stores where I live for $30. You still need to track down a 2GB SD card, Gamecube controller & Gamecube memory card however. And compatibility is not perfect; you can play the vast majority of N64 titles this way, but not Bangai-O N64, which is the N64 game I want to play the most.

I "liked" how some video game "reviewers" called people who disliked it unfair and privileged. Sorry when you create a live service for $50 and its just two systems decades old it better work and be better then what people can find through emu. Sorry Nintendo should not have to do bare minimum and ask for that kind of money not when other live services offer more product and cheaper.

Prorated? I got a little over 13 months to go, and I save a whole whopping 20 cents. $4.79 (I'd be getting ACNHL DLC anyway) for 23 games that barely work is $5 too much.

@sakaixx: Remember when god of friggin war 4 came out? Amazing game!

And nintendo was selling friggin cardboard from a dumpster at the time and managed to keep up with the sales of god of war 4 lololol.

Nintendo has the biggest simps yo! It's pretty crazy. I'm a huge nintendo fanboy but even I know when they are doing something that's crap lol. Breath of the wild and the new mario are all that's worth getting on the switch if you ask me...

I think the whole problem may be the Animal Crossing DLC. The AC DLC by itself is $25 if I'm not mistaken, so if you actually care about AC the deal is actually fairly good.

But including the AC DLC pretty much makes it so the expansion has to cost more than $25, but the majority of people don't care about the DLC and would rather have the N64 and Genesis libraries for an extra $10 or whatever.

I'm wondering if their intent was to make this a common theme where the expansion pass gives you access to Nintendo game DLCs. If that's the case the price would be a lot more justifiable, but they should have made that intention known from the get go.

@coreekymon: its not tho. For $25 you can own it forever or, for $30 rent it for 1 year.

This comes down to the way it's been presented and monetized. When this was $20 a year, most people were paying this for multiplayer. Unless you didn't give a shit about multiplayer and paid this for the NES/SNES games specifically, the purpose of it was for multiplayer. Thus, for most people, the NES/SNES libraries felt kind of like a bonus. A throw-in. Any shortcomings of the emulation have a lesser impact on the consumer.

With this "expansion pack", you're clearly paying for the N64/Genesis libraries. I mean maybe you're paying for the Animal Crossing DLC too... that's certainly a thing, but key point is that you're now paying directly for this. That game has now changed. You're paying for that specifically, so shortcomings have more of an impact now. Plus... y'know, I don't think the NES/SNES emulation had any glaring problems anyway. You could say a lack of features, sure... but it didn't have the list of problems that the N64 emulation does which doesn't help things either.

You think the subscription model is a rip off? You should check out their crappy, yester-year hardware. They've been pulling this shit for years.

@ecurl143: Not to defend Nintendo here, but they deliberately stopped going with beefy hardware after the Gamecube era, in fact, both it and the N64 were more powerful than their competitors at the time.

High end specs means nothing without a good gaming library.

@ecurl143:

Nintendo never really cared about pushing system limits. They've always went the route of inovation with unique takes on a console, affordability, and accessibility. Which is perfectly fine considering the price, being 200$ cheaper then the PS5 and xbox series X, ontop of it being handheld.

And considering the switch is still selling like crazy. Despite having those lower specs. Its fine. If you want something with insane 4k capabilities. Grab a PS5 or xbox.

@Faellin: Agree with everything except the last part. PS5 and XBox don't have 4k capabilities.

@tOrchie: Yes they do? Whether or not every game will actually run in 4K is another story, but they can run it. Forza Horizon 4 on the Series X for example runs at 4K 60FPS.

If they're charging $50 a year, we expect similar to what we would get from PS Plus or Xbox Gold: a couple free SWITCH titles a month.

Meh it’s easy to whine about companies. And it’s fun. It’s a good enough service for now and it will get better.

@sladakrobot: I don’t care what Nintendo does with my money, and I wanted to try the expansion out while I was guaranteed a lower price due to recently renewing Switch Online.

@mattock1987:

Which is the problem with the gaming industry as a whole now.

The "Meh we'll fix it later" mentality when they launch something broken with the promise of it being better later. And sometimes, they never actually fix it. Imagine going to a resturant, ordering a meal, they only bring out 1/10th of what you ordered and say "Come back next week and we'll have your food" and then still charge you full price. Would that be acceptable?

There is a damn good reason I never buy any AAA game until like 6 months after launch these days. Because I flat out can't trust most devs to release something that isn't broken.

@Faellin: the NSO expansion works for me, I have no problem with it. It’s like if I were brought a meal with a small amount of something missing, I probably wouldn’t make a fuss.

In hind sight, Nintendo should have stayed away from paid online. As for retro games, they could probably have rolled N64, GB, GBC, and GBA into the base service, but offered to sell all titles separately as virtual console games for those that don't want to put up with weekly check ins. For an upgrade, they could have made the expansion pass $15 and offered Gamecube and Wii games.

My issue is with how the N64 games are performing, according to reports. If they're going to charge this much, the emulation better be perfect. Certain features are gone too. There are many SNES games that we are still waiting for too.

The pricing of this is consistent with Nintendo's inability to ever put their AAA first party games on sale on the Nintendo digital store. Stuff is NEVER on sale. If it is, it's for a holiday and is only $5 off.

@hardwenzen: I dunno man... In a way... They are kind of genius sometimes too. Remember when they sold literal cardboard that destroyed god of war 4 sales at the time??? CRAZY! And like... It worked some how and made em a lot of money...

I guess that's just the fans being dumb I guess... I dunno lol.

Rightfully so. 30 dollars would've been a tad bit more reasonable. 50 is outrageous.
