Nioh Is A Brutal Return To Form For Ninja Gaiden Developer

From the ashes.

Upcoming samurai action dungeon-crawler Nioh seems like a proper callback to the work of its developer Team Ninja. The calculated, brutal action and heavy emphasis on Japanese mythology and imagery stand proudly in ways the studio hasn't embraced since its work on the first two Ninja Gaiden games. But at the same time, it leans heavily on contemporary sensibilities, possessing a structure not unlike From Software's incredibly popular Dark Souls games. But Nioh is more than just a Souls-like game set in Sengoku-era Japan. It's the work of a studio overcoming a struggle to rediscover its identity. And most of all, it's a return to form.

In the years before Team Ninja developed Nioh, the studio once stood at the forefront of the character-driven action-game genre with its trademark style and merciless philosophy on difficulty. However, the shifting demand for easier, more approachable action-adventure games in the early 2010s impacted Team Ninja. Suddenly, the team had to make games that didn't fit their style.

"It was a tough time for us; we don't come from that school of design," said Nioh creative director Tom Lee. "We felt lost because that's not who we are. The majority of our team are fine-tuned craftsman, and our directors have a very specific vision about gaming, so it was difficult to adjust to in those years."

The struggle to adapt was reflected in the quality of the studio's action games during that time: 2012's Ninja Gaiden 3 and 2014's Yaiba: Ninja Gaiden Z were unrefined, superficially difficult, and shamelessly catered to trends. Team Ninja's work on the Dead or Alive series remained a consistent staple for the studio, but in its attempts to follow its action game lineage, it lost track of its ability to harness what made its early work so great.

"During that time, we made some bad choices by trying to do certain things, thinking we could accommodate a particular playstyle," said Lee. "We lost ourselves."

But as Team Ninja faced a changing climate in games, From Software's Souls series began to rise in popularity. Its punishing, yet satisfying dungeon crawling proved that an audience still existed for action games that challenged players through unforgiving mechanics and constant failure. The success of the Souls games afforded Team Ninja an opportunity to reclaim itself, but where could it start? Enter Nioh.

First announced in 2005, Nioh was the pet project of Koei co-founder Kou Shibusawa. The company developed it internally as an RPG based on an unfinished script by acclaimed filmmaker Akira Kurosawa, which told the tale of the first blonde-haired samurai in 1600s Japan. However, the initial version of the game failed to meet Shibusawa's vision, resulting in the project being transferred to other studios. Nioh took on various forms in the subsequent years, going as far as becoming a Dynasty Warriors-styled action game. But all of these versions fell through. At least, none worked until Team Ninja entered the picture in 2010 to develop the game's combat system.

"We didn't really know anything about Nioh until the head of Koei presented it to us," commented Lee. "At first, I had reservations about the project: why is this western protagonist in this Japanese setting? Are we making a historic period Samurai simulator? Is this another [Dynasty] Warriors-like game?"

Despite these reservations, Team Ninja eventually took on full development of Nioh in 2011. "The more we thought about it as a team, we began to see the potential of what [Nioh] could be. And coming from that confusing place we were at before, we knew a project like this was a perfect opportunity for us to re-present ourselves and put out a project akin to our earlier work."

No Caption Provided

And it shows. Nioh, even in its similarities to the Souls series, manages to channel the distinct style, feeling, and design of the studio's most iconic offerings. The impact of your character's weapon upon a yokai's flesh reignites memories of Ryu Hayabusa's Dragon Blade slicing rogue Ninja; a cave that summons a swarm of bats to knock you off a ledge upon passing it calls to mind the myriad brutal traps from the first Ninja Gaiden. These familiar sensations could only come from Team Ninja, but none of this would've been possible if it weren't for the circumstances that paved the way for Nioh to become what it is today.

It was a perfect storm: a studio struggling to reclaim its identity and a project deeply rooted in Japanese history and mythology struggling to take shape for nearly a decade. When these two forces fully met five years ago, everything fell into place, and it was an opportunity for Team Ninja to go back to its roots.

We had to remind ourselves that at the end of the day we're Japanese, and that we need to create a game that pays respect to our tradition and our roots.

It was under these circumstances that Team Ninja learned an important lesson: "We had to remind ourselves that at the end of the day we're Japanese, and that we need to create a game that pays respect to our tradition and our roots. There's no reason for us to hide that. In fact, let's celebrate it and pay respect to that," Lee said.

To many of us, From Software's reintroduction of difficulty to the triple-A sphere was refreshing and unexpected--but it was precisely what Team Ninja had been doing all along in its early games. Nioh resembles the Souls formula, but the pride and confidence that it exudes in its interpretation of that game type goes beyond rudimentary comparisons. It's unashamed to immerse itself in Japanese culture, pulling from its deep well of history and mythology; and it has no qualms in picking you up and smashing you into the ground, only to do so a second time while you're trying to catch your breath.

"It took us so long to feel a sense of pride in our games," Lee concluded. "But we're back in the sense that we know who we are. These are our strengths and this is a universe that we understand. That's why we're doing everything we can to present it in its best light."

Expect to see exactly what Team Ninja learned when Nioh launches on February 7, exclusively for PS4.

Tiptoeing around the fact that Tomonobu Itagaki was the mastermind/talent behind Ninja Gaiden(back when it was still good) and now that he's gone and tecmo partnered with Koei the geniuses behind the amazing dynasty warriors games(sarcasm) this game might as well be Metal Gear Survive. I can't really respect the decision to blatantly rip off of the amazing Souls games but with worse art direction either.

@nathanmaxtro: Sony don't mind parting with a few cash to get timed exclusive because they know in today generation of gamers, the mass go where they can get it first, not months down the road..

Missed the last chance demo. Looks more like onimusha (with difficulty ramped up) than dark souls to me though.Lore looks up to scratch And thankfully they didn't copy dark souls' obtuse method of storytelling.

Any other way to play the demo?

I just wish the enemies would commit to the direction of their attacks. For example the Ogress will literally spin in the air to adjust to your position... It is horribly cheap, awful looking, and straight up unfair.

The controls are incredibly clunky and completely put me off this game. No matter which weapon I used I had all the agility of a tank. I can't believe they don't use the fantastic combo system from Ninja Gaiden Sigma.

I've been a fan of Team Ninja games. I didn't get around to playing Ninja Gaiden 3 or the spinoff Ninja Gaiden game although both are still on my "to play list". Team Ninja's issues should be a tale of caution to other studios to stop trying to be everything to everyone and focus on your core audience since if you try to be everything to everyone you typically end up sucking at everything (Square-Enix I'm certainly pointing a figure at your here among others). At any rate I'm definitely planning to get Nioh and already have it save on my game wishlist on Amazon.

I had a blast with The Nioh Last Chance Trial. But I didn't pass the first mission. Can I still try to pass it later to get the unlockables or is it too late for that? I cannot wait to buy this game!

Nioh is outstanding! Had so much fun with the Last Chance beta. So sad it's a timed beta otherwise I would keep playing until release. I was so busy this weekend that I didn't get a chance to play as much as I would have liked. I sucked bad at first but started getting better. Really liked the hammer. Really talented studio and love the look of the game. Love how it's Pro enabled. Played around with the video options and tried it at 4K/30 and 1080p/60. Great video options hope all games adopt these choices in the future. Going to be a spectacular exclusive.

i watched a few streams and it looked like Ninja Gaiden and Dark Souls had a baby with this being its offspring. Also, the difficulty looks challenging and that was the selling point to me.

The demo was okay. I feel the mechanics rely a little too heavily on the Ki Pulse, and most of the enemies' attacks patterns follow you. It makes it feel cheap. I also HATE the MMO style equipment drop BS too. My god is that ever cheesy.

And yes I beat it both the regular mission and twilight mission.

And now that as well... missions... no open world... F'n missions...

Anybody saying this is anywhere near as good as Dark Souls needs a pimp slap.

@obsidian_born: Well i got your points,I just replied as a Ds fan.I think Nioh improved the formula in some aspects(combat for me seens really well done),while being worst in others, for me the big let down was just the mission system locked into a map,I love exploring the unknown in DS and guess will miss that in Nioh.

@obsidian_born: Im a DS fan and think combat in Nioh is improved over DS,DS is just L1 R1,roll away...Nioh got complex combo mechanics far deeper than DS,Im ok with Ki pulse and the Drop rate could be lower with more relevant itens for sure...about the missions Yeah a sandbox like DS would be better but im not concerned if they have a good amount of them. The lore seens to be more elaborated than DS too,day one buy for me.

@pedrolopes1313:

Don't get me wrong, I will probably buy this game. But I do feel deflated a bit after playing the demo. It lacks elegance, but still offers some fun gameplay.

I will quote Bruce Lee. "Simplicity is Brilliance" Koei Techmo does not get that. It might sound trivial but you can tell that just from the fonts the use.

Despite having very limited time this weekend (LIAR!) I was able to spend a few hours with the Nioh demo and even managed to beat that unbearably insane samurai battle (Damn you samurai!).

There were certain elements I liked about the demo and certain things I didn't but overall I think this game is shaping up to be a good experience.

I think its unfair to constantly be mentioning the souls games anytime Nioh is mentioned but unfortunately the similarities give merit to these comparisons and due to this its like the game is living in FROM's shadow. Its almost like the little brother trying to pave his own path in the world but being reminded from his parents about the successes of his older sibling.

Even I myself kept this subconscious thought in the back of my head throughout my whole play-through, comparing everything from the way my character moved to such subjective things as the overall difficulty of enemy and boss encounters.

The mission style layout is yet another point I'm sure will be an area of contention with certain groups voicing their distaste for it. Its true its not a fully immersive open world but once again I wonder if these concerns are due in part to gamers experiences with the souls games. Personally I'm divided.

From the very limited time I had with it I can see how some die-hard souls fans might not gravitate towards it right away as the souls games I found had an easier learning curve and were more accessible right out the gate (a souls game easier? You've lost you're damn mind.). With that said, for those who maybe found dark souls too easy (yeah, right lol.) I can see how something like this would be the next step up. Personally I love the challenge.

There's a lot to like here and considering the demo is just a snapshot of the final product I would say its heading in the right direction.

@videogameninja: Demons souls wasnt fully open either, yet people are asking for HD remasters and sequels cause somehow hub-world for a souls game wouldnt matter as much as in Nioh. Anyway, i had to cancel my Nioh pre-order and put it toward BOTW. Im a huge Souls fan, but this game here just isnt for me. Its deff lacking something while trying to do too much.

played the demo and i must say: it's hard man, the way i like. thanks to team ninja to give us this last oportunity to test and feel the game, after spending hours fighting the humans and youkais from the demo, i've decided to buy this game after all, i've completed the main mission killing the main boss ogress and almost defeated her again in the optional twilight mission, a very harder version of the main mission. as a fan of the soulsborne series, this is an must buy for me, great work the demons of team ninja done and thanks to sony to for bring us another excellent exclusive in 2017!!!

@fabio79gamer: If I didn't pass either mission could I still play it and try to beat it later on to get the free dlc? Or is it too late? This weekend I was swamped with things breaking down around the house so I only got to play for about a solid 2 hours. Plus I did the tutorial to get the feel for everything.

@cherub1000: The fact R2 only swaps items on Dpad while R3 is lock on, which beyond being dumb kills a ninja playstyle. Never mind dodge/run button overrides stance. But thats what SOULS does and its the input here. Then theres the giant statues & pinwheels. Comes off half baked after a bit.

Im curious how much the demo changed from previous one, but itll be out soon enough.

@jdc6305: demo was a lot of fun. I wasn't sold initially but really got stuck in yesterday and loved every moment! I'm not gonna make any souls references suffice to say there are a lot of similarities but I felt Nioh was very much it's own game. My biggest issue is with the mission system, not saying it's gonna be bad, maybe it's gonna work really well on release? To me, an open world feels more worth exploring. I've no idea how small or large each mission is gonna be in anycase so it's hard to judge. On the whole, it was solid fun to learn a new fighting style and to be looking forward to what's to come!

I finished the demo. It is just a demo but people already say it is better than soulsborne series just because it seems harder. I think this is due to ignorance or hypewagon.

1) Being way more punisher than soulsborne does not mean better game. In fact this heavy punishment(some people say hardness) of Nioh is more like annoying factor than enjoying. Punishment of soulsborne series is well balanced. Actualy, both nioh and soulsborne games might seems harder compared to Mario, GTA etc but if you want to play real hard games then go play some competitive games like strategy games like starcraft2 OR moba games like dota2, lol OR fps games like counterstrike, quake OR even fighting games like sf. I laugh those people who thinks souls series or nioh or simply any game against AI is hard.

2) Game has potential and we will see how well the full product. However, i dont like mission system. In soul series you are completely free and have no idea where to go. Also environment, athmosphere, soundtrack, boss design, can not come close to any soulsborne game.

Only way to get flat Ki is heart, which means more sword damage. But hopefully just the demo
