No Cloud Saves After All For Nintendo Switch Games Like Pokemon And Dark Souls

"This game does not support Save Data Cloud backup."

Nintendo Switch's online service has been much anticipated, and despite previous delays its release is right around the corner. Now, it looks like one of its biggest selling features (especially if you've ever lost or broken your Switch) won't be available for all games; some big titles, like Pokemon, Let's Go Pikachu!/Eevee and Splatoon 2, won't allow cloud saves.

As reported by Game Informer, a message saying "This game does not support Save Data Cloud backup" has begun appearing on many Eshop pages. This includes the upcoming Pokemon and Splatoon, but also Dark Souls Remastered, Dead Cells, FIFA 19, and NBA 2K19. Nintendo has said in the past that not all games would support cloud saves. Other games, like Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, Mario Tennis Aces, and other games that will use the service's multiplayer capabilities, don't have the warning.

Now Playing: You Can Now Subscribe To Nintendo Switch's Upcoming Online Service - GS News Update

Nintendo Switch Online will go live some time in the "second half" of September. At that point, you'll need a subscription to be able to play online (it's been free since the Switch's launch in March 2017). In addition to multiplayer and (some) cloud save abilities, you'll also have access to a library NES titles that will expand over time.

The service costs just $20/year (a lot cheaper than its Xbox and PlayStation competitors). There are also options to subscribe monthly, at $4/month, or pay $8 for three months of access. There is also a $35 family plan that allows up to eight different Nintendo accounts to share the same memberships (even if there are multiple consoles involved).

In other Nintendo Switch news, Civilization 6 has been announced for the console, coming this November, and there are new challenges in Fortnite. If you're excited for Pokemon, Let's Go Pikachu!/Eevee (even despite the lack of cloud saves), check out the version-specific Pokemon you can catch in each.

Looks like I'm in the minority here but I have no problem with this. Pokemon and Dark Souls ( and I'm assuming the others as well) have trading features that would make duping extremely easy to accomplish with cloud saves. I applaud them for not making it easy for cheaters to do their thing.

I was quite excited about paying the yearly fee for Nintendo's online service... until now. There is no point if they can't make a basic, simple decision to support online saves for major games (let alone minor games!). It's unbelievably baffling...

it doesn't support the major titles so why are people paying for this again?

no wonder it costs just $20 a year... it is missing all the key features people were expecting. is this some kind of joke? to those who thought nintendo had actually gotten its shit together... nope. clearly not. if you happen to lose your switch, have it damaged or get a save corruption, well... too bad. there goes your hundreds of hours of progress. time to start all over again. nintendo doesn't think this is a problem that needs a solution? at the very least, how about allowing people to transfer their local saves via pc transfer? the switch has already been hacked so there is no need to be concerned about piracy any longer. those who will take that road will do it regardless and have already done so. why should every switch owner be penalized?

@Xristophoros:

And one of the first things available to the hacking community was, drumrole, save backups! Maybe if Nintendo pulled their finger out their arse they wouldn't have such rampant console hacks in the first place.

At least Sony and Microsoft came out the gate with their online service up and running. They can at least (attempt) to justify it by saying, you know what these things cost money to maintain so here's your price and these are your features.

Nintendo are just saying, you know what we can't be bothered to figure out a proper online service at the moment so just pay us some bloody money or we're taking it away.

I love the Switch, but as a company Nintendo can just **** right off.

Now don't get me wrong I love my Switch.

But ffs Nintendo are you seriously just taking the piss or what. Consistently knock the ball out the park on one swing; and yourself in the balls on the next.

This 'online service' is an absolute joke, how on God's earth are you seriously justifying giving people online access for 18 months for free, and then taking it away and locking it behind a freaking paywall.

Oh wow yeah we get some nes games, great, I'm sure I'll play those for all of 5 minutes when games like The Messenger and Dead Cells exist smh.

Oh and let's not forget that there are 'ways' of already backing up EVERY Switch game save, albeit locally and not cloud based but still.

No voice chat, selective cloud saves, shitty 'free games' and basically no transparency of information. The only reason anyone is going to pay for this is because they HAVE to if they want to enjoy the sane (keeping that typo, it's pretty apt) service they previously were.

That's not a service Nintendo, that's a ransom. And just because it's cheap doesn't exclude it from being an exploitative rip off.

This service should not exist, at the very least every title that has thus far been free to play online should remain free to play. And local save backups should be a feature of your OS not your fucking live service you money grabbing bastards, especially seeing how easy the bloody thing is to do.

@risingdawn: totally agree. with no local backup options on the switch, the lack of cloud saves is unforgivable. i am not a switch owner at present, but issues such as these make me less interested in adopting in the future.

Even less reason to pay for Nintendo's online membership. It seems like they're really cutting corners with it. Worse yet is the Switch has no local back up options, either.
