No Man's Sky Could Get Paid DLC

"Maybe in the future there's some reason why we just couldn't possibly afford to do a certain feature without charging for it."

No Man's Sky director Sean Murray admits in a new interview that he was "perhaps naive" for suggesting he would like to see the game only get free updates after launch.

He told the Daily Star (some quasi-NSFW images at the link) that he could not rule out the possibility that No Man's Sky will feature some paid DLC in the future.

Now Playing: No Man's Sky - Review

"Maybe in the future there's some reason why we just couldn't possibly afford to do a certain feature without charging for it," Murray said.

Some new features coming to No Man's Sky include "the ability to build bases and own giant space freighters." Murray announced these prior to the game's release last week on PlayStation 4 and PC.

No Caption Provided

While a release date for these new features, or any other ones, has not been announced, Murray recently teased that a new patch is coming and it will make people "very happy."

"Hello Games will continually update No Man's Sky this way," Murray said in a blog post.

In another pre-release blog post where Murray attempted to temper players' expectations for No Man's Sky, he also teased that major-sounding new features could come in the future.

"If you hoped for things like pvp multiplayer or city building, piloting freighters, or building civilizations… that isn't what NMS is," he said. "Over time it might become some of those things through updates."

"perhaps naive" is the new code phrase for "I lied"

He was "perhaps naive" when he said you could meet up with, and be attacked by other players on occasion, too.

@Chernnunos:I agree with almost all of your points, it just seems like the bare minimum was done to make this into a game. If it weren't for managing inventory there wouldn't be anything to do. I'm also confused as to how you are "discovering" planets with thousands of intelligent lifeforms (and outposts) already on them. How are these planets undiscovered when there are space stations with tons of species flying in and out of? There should be more to do on planets, some planets should have cities and towns, and quests on them. You should meet allies and add them to your team, you should have a home planet to store loot and vehicles. I could go on and on. It seems like we were charged $60 for a basic outline, if they don't do a lot of DLC and content, I'll be pissed because right now it's basically feels like a Steam green light game with a bigger budget.

@Chernnunos: gas giants are missing by design; Sean Murray said before release this was intentional because attempting to land would just kill you needlessly. Animals become more varied as you progress, which I think was a bad call because now people who quit because of lack of variety miss out. It was said up front there was no true multi-player and that combat was not a central theme. Gravitational variance with a procedural formula of this scale could lead to an unbeatable game by chance. And there is indeed a model for the player. Someone found it in the unused assets using a decompiler. It's human but I think not showing us what we are may be central to the theme of the game.

Seriouslypeople are upset because of things they weren't promised. And yet, still dump a solid work week of time into it. From a business standpoint that means the fans bought it and so did the morons, so win,

This sounds less like broken promises and more like someone who hasn't caught on that media sources are looking for any sound bite they can inflate into a problem that doesn't exist. He thinks he is leaving the door open for possible necessary changes in direction, but in reality Sean Murray is feeding non-stories like this one.

The fact is, no promise has been broken. The things people made up in their head that they could expect if this were a AAA release were, but that's not on hello games (and if anyone, Sony is to blame for that). This is an article about how because he said out loud something every developer of an anything has to consider for an anything, the sky is falling. Negativity about NMS is click bait for anyone who expected the game to be something it wasn't advertised to be. Personally, the only thing about the game that isn't pretty much exactly as I expected is that my HOTAS setup doesn't work with it.

@corvus_dove So the fact that we were shown a COMPLETELY different game during presentations, is not a blatant attempt at misleading anyone?

All the interviews you can find on youtube, where he sits there yammering on about a lot of cool features. Features that are nowhere to be found in the released game. Not a lie?

You must be kidding me.

What a jackass. That guy knows what he's doing. There's nothing naive about him making that promise, he just changed his mind on it since he could make a lot more money that way. Sounds like that guy tricked all the people that were generating the huge hype for him and his game.

Yeugh Murray, I want to like you man and think you are a pretty chill guy but you're starting to sound more and more like post-Bullfrog Molyneux here. Just don't start apologizing and saying No Man's Sky was bad but you'll totally be blowing it out the water with the sequel or something like that.

Freighters sounds cool, but what would the point be to making a base when you most likely will never see that planet again once you leave that particular system?

False advertising with the "you can see other players" comments in multiple interviews and now false advertising about "all" future content being free. People bought this game because of that last comment. Should be able to get a refund regardless of time played when they outright false advertised like that.

Of all the problems this game is having, and with such little content in the game, you're gonna talk about charging for dlc? My heart.... it hurts.

Ever since this game was announced, people have been confused because this guy has a real problem with being honest. He seems like a nice enough guy, but I suggest he either start being professional or hire PR person and shut his mouth.

@darthaznable: The fact that this studio was making Joe Danger games before (no disrespect) should have alerted people that maybe they couldn't manage the colossal promises of No Man's Sky.

OMG this studio backtracks and misleads more than Peter Molyneux (sp?)

First they state it's a universe with multiple galaxies.
No, it isn't it's a single Galaxy (if you can even call it that)

Then they say you can interact with other players.
Well that's been proven wrong.

Then this, saying all future DLC would be a free update.
And here we are.

The fact it's a Galaxy, and the fact you can't interact with other players, and the fact they will have paid DLC is fine.

What's ****ed up is that they keep saying it will be one way, and then doing the exact opposite.

@skyhighgam3r: No, it's definitely multiple galaxies. With quintillions of stars in one galaxy, you would never reach the center.

Where are these other galaxies at then? I've seen nothing of any sort through my play-time, videos on youtube, or any other source I can pour over.

I have my own list of Mods that would make NMS more enjoyable

1. A Professional In-Game Camera
2. Pirates replaced by Star Wolf from the Star Fox games
3. Whole bunch of fictional ships
4. Godzilla like creatures on planets.
5. Space Dragons
6. Land Vehicles of some sort.

I wish I didn't suck at programming.

Maybe they should focus on getting a "Game" within the world they created which we paid for before aiming for paid DLC...

Next step : NHL 17 will allow you to skate freely and endlessly all over North American rinks but will charge you 14,99$ for a season pass which over time will add the puck and eventually, maybe goaltenders...

Getting fed up with this lackluster marketting strategy releasing half-baked games to milk gamers even more afterwards just to get a game that sorts of make sense after DLCs and DLCs...

You need to hush Sean Murray. Not because I disagree with the possibility you might need to charge for an expansion, but because your game is getting a lot of negative reception right now and you should focus on fixing the issues that are bothering people before throwing more kindling on the fire. Just a tip...

BTW - having a blast with it, despite some of its quirks :-)

@xantufrog: Coming back from the other day. This game is crap. The redeeming qualities are overshadowed by the over abundance of crap. Since my analogy yesterday hurt your feelings, I'll just say sometimes you can judge a book by it's cover. Especially when the pages are blank.

@crxuchilbara: i really don't care what you think about this game. You shouldn't flatter yourself into thinking you "hurt my feelings" - I was responding to someone else the other day for making factually incorrect statements, and you got pissy at me for calling them out on it. I'm not going to be drawn into a debate about the game, because I'm a firm believer that not every game is for every person, so you don't get to tell me what to like and I don't get to tell you what to like. End of story

If data on Steam Spy is accurate (690k copies sold) and assuming that one PC copy sold = one PS4 copy sold, I would like M. Murray to explain exactly how he and his 15-people studio can't afford to offer free DLC, at least for the features he told would be in the game in the first place.

And there you have it! This is why a 15 person indie studio, should not charge $60 for their game. Though I'm sure Sony had/has something to do with the price and some future dlc not being free.
