No Man's Sky Dev Is Already Finishing Work on First Big Update

Hello Games is working on a big patch for the upcoming game.

No Man's Sky launches next week, and anticipation has reached a fever pitch. But developer Hello Games isn't taking a break from working on the game in the run-up to its release: there's already an update in the works, and it seems like a pretty big one.

On Twitter, Sean Murray mentioned that the team is currently nearing completion on the first big patch for the game, and it doesn't appear to be a minor to address bugs and stability. Murray wrote, "5am at Hello Games. Wrapping up a month of work on our first update. Lots of new features, balancing and content."

Now Playing: How Will We Play No Man's Sky? - The Lobby

This is encouraging, as it hints that the developer might add new, free content to the game in the future. It's unclear how this will work at the moment, however. Murray also hasn't stated yet when we can expect this update--considering that it's already almost done, the studio could in fact be targeting release day for this update.

No Man's Sky launches on August 9 for PS4 and PC, but recently someone managed to get a leaked copy of it. He claims to have "beaten" the game in about 35 hours. While you wait to get your hands on the game, you can check out our recent opinion about whether or not players will destroy No Man's Sky's universe.

They better add FREE content and patches to the game since the sold us a game that wasn't remotely what was advertised. Hell I really liked the game at first til I aw the Angry Joe review and saw how DRASTICALLY different the game was 3-4 months ago and was having features promised til the release date that were not in the game.

So are we supposed to start playing this game when we get it or wait for the patch?

Seems like people without a pre-order have a valid reason not to buy the game and wait for the patch and inevitable price drop.

All this fear generated from holding something hostage to a preorder.

£40? More than Wings of Liberty?

Hopefully they can continue to support the game post-launch if they sell enough.

I'd love missions like Destiny raids. I can't imagine it'd be too difficult to implement certain pre-made structures on certain planets and make humsn type alien species that protect it.

I think it would be great if they followed Rockstar's approach with GTA Online in regards to DLC. The game sounds like it would take really well to such a thing.

I bet this is one of the those games which the size of patches is bigger than the game itself.

I preordered this, but the more I read, the more worried I am that I will like it.

They really should have included missions in this game. The idea of farming for goods, upgrading equipment, rinse and repeat just sounds like it will get dull quick...

Some say the update creates a black hole event when you near the centre of the universe which then warps you to the outer edges extending the game time beyond 30 hours.

I want to play this but my backlog is crazy. I went overseas to do a government contract job and beat everything I took. Ac syndicate, division, nba 2 k, fallout, mad max, batman ak uncharted. Playing the Witcher 3 now still got bloodborne, dark souls 3, and mgs5. Is anybody real good in bloodborne they can help me breeze through that sh)t in like 2 days lol. I'm trying to clear these games before the end of August

@mark5225: haha I know the feeling man. In reference to titles like bloodborne and souls though, I wouldn't recommend trying to speed run it on your first time as your gonna miss so much of hat the games about, a buddy of mine has metal gear and he's about half way after over 200hrs, so that's sounds rather tough to finish fast. Good luck!

@mark5225: I gave up on the old school notion of 'beating a game'. My backlog is over 3000 titles strong (no lie) so it's become more of a matter of just enjoying a game 'till I feel like moving on.

So much negativity in this comments section. I never paid much attention to this game since they never really showed what would make this giant game have the diversity needed not to get bored. But then I looked into some gameplay, and it seems like it can be interesting if the random events are diverse and break up the pacing of the game in a good way. I want to see more about the crafting, it seems minimal but there is some cool potential, like if you go to a new planet and find that someone has already made something cool on it (doubt that'll be the case, which is why I'm waiting for a lot of reviews and gameplay videos to come out).

That's really the problem. They have been so vague that people have made up things they'd like to be there based off of what little we have been told.

@blueboxdoctor: Finding another player or something done by another player is next to impossible. That is simply not the point of the game. The game is based around your journey and you exploring and discovering things. So if your waiting to hear about building elements or multiplayer aspects this likely isn't the game for you.

@blueboxdoctor: You keep saying Crafting and what if a player made something cool on a planet. None of that exists in this game.. There is no building. And when you mine or whatever on a planet, when you leave it resets, so someone else would never see what you have done.
Also, there have been no "random events" listed anywhere like you mention.

@chubby170: To be clear it doesn't rest so much as small changes don't exist outside of your save. Small changes you make will be saved and when you return they will be there but only large changes will be saved server side for everyone else to see.

@phoenix1289: That is not what the developer has said that I read and is exactly the opposite.

He even made mention that is a player was to make large changes and mine an entire planet, once they leave it would be reset... Ill try and find the article.

Edit - Here you go:

"Can I leave my mark on the planets I visit?

In some ways you can. If you discover a planet or a creature, you can name it and add it to the galactic index. It will bear that name forever (or at least until the universe ends) and other players coming across it will know that you discovered it first.

You won't really be able to leave a physical mark on the game, however, at least not on the universe at large. As you travel to new planets, they are generated around you, and when you leave them, they degenerate. So, if you use a mining tool to blast a section of a planet, perhaps to draw a giant penis on the ground (I will just assume that is what you will do), once you leave that planet and fly away, the game will once again disassemble the planet behind you.

These types of changes (digging caves, drawing dongs) will not be visible to other players if they happen to visit that planet. As Murray told Game Zone:

“Changes the player makes are saved locally,” Murray explained. “So if you start destructing the terrain, that’s saved on your own machine. And if you try and make -- what we would consider -- really significant [changes], some of those [changes] are stored on the server, along with the discoveries that you make. But in general, a lot of what you’re doing is considered insignificant. If you kill a creature, we scratch that, we save that that’s happened, but we don’t feel the need to like, kill that creature for everybody.”

So it sounds like you'll be able revisit and view the dongs you've drawn, even if no one else can see them."

@chubby170: The article you posted directly proves what I said.

"These types of changes (digging caves, drawing dongs) will not be visible to other players if they happen to visit that planet."

"“Changes the player makes are saved locally,” Murray explained. “So if you start destructing the terrain, that’s saved on your own machine. And if you try and make -- what we would consider -- really significant [changes], some of those [changes] are stored on the server"

When he talks about the planets degenerating and regenerating he's referring to how the game handles returning to areas. Whereas most games have an in game map that is saved and loaded up on command No Man's Sky does not. Instead everything is based on the algorithm they use meaning the game can just regenerate the planet from scratch every time from the core equation rather than having to hold the map of every planet you visit in memory. As you make changes the small ones are saved locally and factored in when it generates the planet so that it matches up with how you left it and for large changes the same method is used except the change is saved to the severs so that it will appear for everyone.

To put it simply:

You approach a planet. The game then looks at all the factors involved in the generation to create an equation along the lines of A+H+J+R=X with A, H, J, and R being various factors like distance from sun which go into determining things like animals, climate, and faction presence while X is the resulting planet. After generating that it adds in factor P which is the players changes from memory so you end up with the generated planet with the changes the player made all the while the game only has to keep the changes you made in memory rather than the entire map.

@phoenix1289: No, that is not what it is saying. You will not see changes that others have made as it says. Since it is saved on your machine, only you will see (minor) changes that have been made..

It does say some significant changes may be saved... Be curious what that will be..

You said in your OP that large changes would be seen by others, and that doesnt seem to be the case.

Can someone actually point me to the actual PC release date. Seems like there is a ton of confusion.

"No Man's Sky launches on August 9 for PS4 and PC", Gamespot said.

No Man's Sky website says.."No Man’s Sky is a game about exploration and survival in an infinite procedurally generated galaxy, coming to PS4 on August 9th in North America and August 10th in Europe, and on PC worldwide on August 12th." http://www.no-mans-sky.com/about/

@captnforever: Ah yes, 1993. When games arrived on floppy discs, single CD-ROMs, and 16 megabit cartridges, loaded onto kilobytes of system RAM, and blazing along at 480 resolutions, with 512 colors and cutting edge sprites mixed with 50 polygons per second.

Shipping such complex games was a miracle without day 1 patches.

(Satire aside, yes I agree that in many cases a Day 1 Patch has become a crutch for today's developers. On the other hand, game complexity has massively increased as well. Besides, being able to tweak a game between gold and launch is something devs would've killed for in the 80s and early 90s too).

@jellyman68: It's not just gamespot. Pretty much every media site and a good chunk of the fan base have been hyping this game up beyond anything the devs have actually stated. Sadly this means many are going to be dissapointed simply because they were mislead whereas they could have just enjoyed the game for what it was if it hadn't been hyped up as the greatest thing since sliced bread.

@phoenix1289: I don't feel its hyped, they have said the same thing every time about the game, trillions of plants, if you focus down you can get to the center somewhere between 20-100 hours. You make your own goals, its a true sandbox. Sounds 100% what i am expecting and wanting.

@kargion: When you say 18 Quintillion Planets, and an entire universe to explore... people's imaginations run wild. That's the hype.

That is what they can't live up to.

It's not their fault, it's the ridiculous assumption of the majority of consumers who have no idea how game-design works.

@phili878: There is but not here. Gamespot is not "Game news". It's game and movie related collection of clickbait articles, that are posted according to trends and not with the intention to inform people of something. If you want news there's Gamasutra or some honest youtube channel, even RPS, to an extent, can be called a "news" site (when they aren't preaching their cancerous politics). But Gamespot or IGN or Polygon (worst one) are just a collection of clickbaits. They are good to visit to check what are the current hot topics, but you shouldn't come here for news or reviews or you won't have a good view of the industry.
