No Man's Sky's 18 Quintillion Planets Take Up Just 6 GB on Disc

"A lot of that is audio."

No Man's Sky, a game that its developer says has 18 quintillion planets to find and explore, takes up just 6 GB of data on the PlayStation 4's Blu-ray disc.

That figure was provided by Sean Murray, founder of No Man's Sky developer Hello Games and a programmer. Posting on Twitter, Murray explained much of that 6 GB is actually taken up audio.

This is likely achieved thanks to the fact that much of the content in No Man's Sky is procedurally generated, which means there's less space taken up on disc. Or it could all be witchcraft.

Continuing, Murray revealed on Twitter that No Man's Sky had passed certification in Europe, United States, and Asia. It is currently being submitted for certification in Japan.

Additionally, the studio is "already busy on Update 1" for the space exploration game. Details on what it will include were not discussed.

No Man's Sky went gold on July 7 and Hello Games celebrated with a selfie.

No Man's Sky is scheduled to launch on August 9 in North America, followed by August 10 in Europe, and August 12 in the UK. Hello Games recently settled a three-year legal battle over the No Man's Sky name, allowing the title to stay the same.

So I guess there really won't be a bunch of video walk throughs on Youtube for this game. At least not in the normal sense.

Game development is like chess. Each dev tries to compete by either positioning or distracting when in a vulnerable position. This Pokemon go craze is sweeping the world and it is providing a fun distraction to traditional gaming. Sony needs to consider delaying this game so it gets the attention it deserves, although most of us agree it may be too late to the party. It will be interesting to see how this plays out.

@droweprice: If the game was 600GB and came on 10 bluray discs, would you pay $60 for it?

Even if it was the same exact game?

How about if it happens to be 60GB like a lot of big title games have been?

The one thing I'm looking forward to seeing from NMS (il buy it when it's on sale because I'm tight) is all the glitch videos on youtube, the possibilities with procedurally generated content has the potential to be hilarious.

NMS is gonna tank so badly. Just the fact that it's a full retail release at 60 dollars with PSX graphics alone has doomed it. It's went from cool indie ppl will download and have fun with to a delayed out of people's hearts and mind 60 dollar game. If it's great word of mouth can sell some copies tho..

@SchNerdy: I must admit that I was really excited for NMS until I found out they were charging full retail price for it.

I think they let the hype go to their heads, all the excitement around the game has made them think that they can over charge for the game.

I foresee a very rude awakening for these Hello Games as the price has meant that of the 300 odd people on the clan forum I go to, only 7 of them were not getting the game.... then the price was announced and now there's only 20 odd people that still want it!

It's a shame as I like to support the few remaining English Devs when I can but I won't do it at any cost.

I wonder if the legal battle with Sky has anything to do with the price?

@martyngiles: you do know that this game has been in the lead for preorders for quite a while now, topping final fantasy 15. Already surpassing how many preorders Dying Light had....etc.

If you buy with amazon you dont pay the full price. My pre-order sits at $41 with shipping and taxes, and to be delivered to me on release day or i get a refund of the shipping and get the game a day or so later if it's late.

@martyngiles: Well better to over charge for a few months and get a few early adopters. Then mark it down and get the rest. Assuming that it gets good reviews of course.

Ok so just to clarify a few things for the people who CLEARLY haven't the time or couldn't be bothered researching themselves:

- THE UNIVERSE ISN'T RANDOM and it's procedurally generated based on rules that create the game's universe (yes, there IS a difference between procedurally and randomly generated). So planets closer to the sun will be hotter, planets further away are colder, different chemical elements that make up the star systems/planets affect the weather, climate etc on planets and these rules in turn affect whether life grows there or not. With so many different rules affecting how the universe is made, it *should* lead to lots of variations.

IT'S THE SAME UNIVERSE FOR EVERY PLAYER because it generates everything around you based on your co-ordinates in the universe. So if someone eventually goes to the same co-ordinates, they will see the same things.

IT'S A UNIVERSE WITH MANY, MANY GALAXIES. Everyone starts on the outer edges of the same galaxy, however there are lots and lots of galaxies

THERE IS STUFF TO DO. LOTS OF IT. You're goal is to get to the centre of the starting Galaxy but it's up to you how to make your journey there. On the way there are countless missions and points of interest, buildings and ruins to explore, wreckages to salvage, weapons to find or craft and alien factions to find/trade/ally/fight with.

All this and a lot more information on WHAT YOU ACTUALLY DO!!!?? is available with a simple search online.

Now, I'm not saying nms will live up to the hype - we'll have to wait until it's released to find out. However some people talk about the game as though they've played it for months when clearly they have NO IDEA what they're talking about.

@tronald_dump: (1) Hilarious user name, good work. (2) I have a couple questions:

"IT'S THE SAME UNIVERSE FOR EVERY PLAYER because it generates everything around you based on your co-ordinates in the universe. So if someone eventually goes to the same co-ordinates, they will see the same things." ... Right on, I've read the exact same information here on GS. My question may be more of a technical one, but in case you DO know the answer... If everything is procedurally generated, that means it's using the power of MY PS4 to create the planets/life forms/etc. as I explore them, right? (It's not like their servers have enough juice to do that for everyone playing.) So once I've explored a few planets and named them and named some of the flora and fauna on them, then I go to the record tower beam or whatever it is and upload my names. At that point, anyone else who ever visits those planets or sees those life forms will see exactly what I saw and can see what I named them, right? Okay, then here's my question: Where/How do the servers store that information so that in case somebody else stumbles upon where I have already been, THEIR PS4 won't generate new content, but will instead generate the same content that MY PS4 already created? I think I understand the DIFFERENCE you were talking about between "procedurally" generated and "randomly" generated. It's not RANDOM, but the game also can't have a set algorithm that has a predetermined 18 quintillion planets, so somewhere on their servers needs to be the information for every single planet/animal/plant/structure/ship/etc. that has EVER been discovered, JUST IN CASE someone else ever stumbles upon it, right? How do they store and redistribute THAT data to all players? Hopefully my question makes sense...

"THERE IS STUFF TO DO. LOTS OF IT... On the way there are countless missions..." There are? I don't remember reading anything about mission based gameplay. Not saying I don't believe you, just curious where you read that? I vaguely remember something about needing to accomplish certain things in order to understand the alien races' languages, but I thought it was just trading with them and finding Rosetta stones throughout the planets, not necessarily doing missions. If you recall where you read that, I'm interested to read it as well. Thanks!

Ok lets talk Diablo for a minute.

Diablo came out in 1996, and it has randomly generated levels/dungeons

Same for Diablo II and Diablo III

I really, really enjoyed the Diablo series and kept playing and replaying them despite running through dungeons that are different each time with monsters that are now purple or green or blue

But I was hooked, reason being : There is always NEW LOOT TO DISCOVER, some cool armor, a rare hammer or sword or some such artifact and when you find a complete set, it turns you into a b4darse killing machine ready to teach the end of level boss some hard hitting lessons

So to me as long as NMS sticks with the above formula I'm in for the long haul

Misleading title. It's a procedurally generated game, all those planets are not stored in the disc. Imagine the loading time if they were.

To all the people saying it's going to get boring in a few hours, let me ask you, what do you do in Destiny, COD, battlefield, FIFA, Madden, Forza...etc that isn't boring after a few hours? Have fun turning around after 900 yards when you are "leaving the mission zone". And killing the same guys, throwing the same passes, driving the same cars on the same tracks endlessly like everyone already does. People complaining about the 1,000,000 guns in borderlands like it wasn't one of the most popular games of its time. Give it a break already. Also, at $60 this game is a steal. Or, you know, you can run around the same Destiny map 40 Times and hope to get a different gun. Because That's entertainment. Amiright?

@cheevis: You have objectives in those games. Yo get a better weapon to access areas that you couldn't before. You compete against other people. Are you saying that the NBA and the NFL is worthless? Because one is just trying to put a ball through a rim and the other is trying to cross a line with a ball? If you dont understand too bad.

Does that mean the game is being printed on dvd's, or will it have multiple copies on a blu-ray so that it can be read faster?

Oh my God. I'm, sadly, beginning to believe the gaming community is poisonous and cynical to an extreme. Something awesome happens, like No Man's Sky being made, and people still whine. No Man's Sky doesn't have to be your cup of tea, that's fine, and you can express that, but all I see are people going on and on about how, "there's nothing to do in this game", "the planets are made by the engine, so it sucks", "this game is going to flop". Seriously? This game has done something quite amazing, and whether or not it lives up to the hype or not, it still has accomplished much. Give it a rest guys. Maybe think positively for a few minutes.

@battlestreak: Well, first, everyone is entitled to speak their opinion, which is good cause it brings attention to ideas that people may have never thought about. In this game, we are not exactly sure how it will play out once released. Yes, it does seem like an impressive game in what it is trying to achieve; however, because it's a procedurally generated game there is a lot of doubt about how it will actually make the game diverse with compelling objectives.

It reminds me of the saying, Quality over Quantity is better; but in this this title, Quantity is trying to be the Quality, which majority of the time is unnecessary, and is a marketing ploy.

@martyngiles: Ugh, you have it backwards, it's everyone is entitled, and can share their opinon, it's just that people don't HAVE to accept, or even acknowledge those people's opinions.

Simply put: I can give my opinion about anything, and you have the right to disregard it, ignore it, do everything to not accept it.

But, people don't have the right to tell other people to STOP saying something because they feel it is whining, or going against what they believe.

It's like me saying all the people need to stop whining about Donald Trump's agenda, because they are poisonous and cynical... See where I am going with this?

@tranceology3: Not at all. In many cases there is no reason whatsoever to be so cynical.

How about this? I think Donald Trump is going to become a dictator, and throw the world into chaos and nuclear war. We're all going to die if he's elected!

Well? That's just my opinion! You can't refute it! I'm being perfectly reasonable!

(That's not really my opinion by the way)

See? That could be someone's opinion. But, it's overly cynical and negative. So, I can't call them out on it? You're not making sense.

All the hype for this game keeps talking about the impossible size of it. Honestly, I don't care if it has a kajillion planets or just 1...I want to know how it plays and if it will be fun/entertaining. All that content means absolutely nothing if the game is boring and feels flat/empty because you can't really do all that much with the content.

@ZIMdoom: I made sure to watch an E3 live video of it, and it just kind of seems like Minecraft in space. The entire demo was spent walking around looking at the different creatures generated you can name as they're discovered, talking about native structures and the lore you can uncover behind them, and then shooting into the ground to mine for ore. Is that enough to entertain for hours on end? Personally I have major gaming ADD, so probably not, but I can see the Minecraft crowd looking to move on from that finding a comfortable home here

@Pipboy360: I personally didn't really enjoy Minecraft but my kids have got thousands of hours in it, my daughter has even asked for her own XB1 to play it on so if NMS is anything like Minecraft I'm sure they could get hooked on it but then there is the price difference.... I don't mind buying 3 copies of Minecraft because I paid £15 (so £45 for 3) for each copy but NMS will cost me £150 for the 3 copies I would need for me, my son and my daughter to be able to play together on separate consoles!

I was honestly expecting NMS to be priced at a similar level to Minecraft, £15- £25. I never imagined £50 a copy!

@martyngiles: valid point. I played Minecraft as much as I could (for some reason it hated my video card and crashed frequently) but I'm with you there, I didn't really care for it. I was shocked when NMS switched to premium pricing honestly, because like you I was ready to drop twenty bucks or so for a weekend of (imo) mostly forgettable fun. $60 is a high cost of entry, and I don't even have kids like you to factor in. Good luck, lol :D
