No Microtransactions in Star Wars Battlefront, Says DICE Dev

Real-world currency "not part of the core design," with credits only accrued by in-game performance.

A senior developer at Star Wars Battlefront studio DICE has put to rest longstanding speculation about whether the game would incorporate microtransactions.

Battlefront uses a two-tier currency system of points and credits, with the latter being used to rent more exotic and dangerous weapons. By convention, two-tier credit systems are typically developed in games to pave the way for microtransactions, with players converting their real money into another currency, and thereby masking how much players are spending on in-game items.

But in an interview with GameSpot at DICE's Stockholm studio, Battlefront design director Niklas Fegraeus made it clear that the game does not allow for microtransactions. He said microtransactions were "not part of the core design" of how Battlefront works.

A verbatim passage from the interview follows:

---

GAMESPOT: Just a point of clarification, I'm not sure whether there is microtransactions in Star Wars Battlefront. Could you explain?

FEGRAEUS: Well the currency system is based on your game performance. The credits that you use to buy things in the game are earned. You play the game, complete challenges, and that's how you get credits.

So, is that the only way you can obtain credits? By earning them by performance?

Yes, that's what's in the game. Absolutely.

Ah, the reason I asked is because Battlefront has a two-step currency system, which is usually a telltale sign of paving the way for microtransactions to be introduced. But it sounds like, from what you are saying, that you are moving away from that?

Yeah, that's not part of the core design of how it works. This is a progression system based on your gameplay performance.

---

Elsewhere in the interview, Fegraeus emphasised how player performance would be the only way to earn credits.

"There are several [credit] systems working together here. Just doing things in the game earns you points, and those [points] earn you credits. That's the baseline system; the more you do, the more credits you get," he said.

"But then there are other systems, such as small challenges for you to complete, and rewards for different actions.

"If you're really competitive, the coolest things you can get is star cards to best suit your play style. If you really like to snipe, for example, you should totally go for the blaster cannon. Or if you're looking for something cool in terms of expressing yourself, then I would say if you gather a lot of credits, you can buy some expensive in-game items, such as being able to play as an alien race. You can be a Rodian while everyone else is human."

In the video above, GameSpot offers hands-on impressions of the EA shooter. Follow the links below for further videos:

Star Wars Battlefront ships to PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC in North America on November 17, and comes to the UK and Australia on November 19.

Meanwhile, the Star Wars Battlefront Beta begins on October 8 and runs until October 12.

EA is outright taking lies

there will be a microtransaction system using the "shortcut" kits like BF

and it will be pricey to encourage only the richest and laziest to purchase

"...you can buy some expensive in-game items, such as being able to play as an alien race. You can be a Rodian while everyone else is human."

- wow ...that's kinda weak...do not want to be a complainer , but that is weak, seriously somebody at EA, somebody with voice, better be looking around (what other developers are doing in their games) and taking notes.

I am not going to be one bit surprised if later (following battlefront's release) EA changes his mind and decides to add micro-transactions.

I honestly don't find the big deal about a game having or not having microtransactions IF!!! these don't give ANY kind of advantage to people that spend real money, for example BF4's microtransactions are there, but they offer little to no advantage to people that pay, and the items paying users get (battlepacks) can be also obtained by simply playing the game.

I don't trust EA either, and I believe that if they don't add "micro's" they will most certainly release a lot of DLC, I'm almost seeing them as "Star Wars Episode I Map Pack", "Episode 2 Map Pack" and so on.

"...part of the core..." < that part there is very specific. Because it's EA, I take it to mean, later on there will be microtransactions. I really wish EA would get to the point where negativity wasn't my initial reaction to something they say or do, but they brought it on themselves.

So many people will be so lost and confused by actually needing to play the game to advance instead of just paying.

Battlefront WILL have Microtransactions. I don't believe a single word of this. EA could always add them in at a later date.

Or it'll nickel and dime you with shitty DLC.

Is anyone out there stupid enough to think that this game won't try to nickel and dime you to death anyways? Either they are blatantly lying about microtransactions to not affect pre-orders / day 1 sales, or they will simply find another way to bleed money from players while "technically" staying within this statement through semantics.

Short version. Never, ever, EVER, trust EA. EVER.

And LOL! That pic of the Luke model...his head is waaaaay too big.

Basically Rob asked Niklas Fegraeus (DICE), "will there be microtransactions," and the man replied, "we didn't design the game for microtransactions." Then Rob asked for clarification, "so there won't be microtransactions," and Niklas once again responded with, "we didn't design the game for microtransactions."

If there's such a thing as "dancing around the question," then Niklas just twerked all over Rob's interview.

No microtransactions, but you'll have the:

Preorder custom helmets, day one maps pack, digital deluxe Edition weapons, season pass bonus cards, class X shortcut pack, ultimate edition bonus pack, console bundle costumes for Darth Vader.. Etc

One way or another the content will locked behind a pay wall, and you'll pay to get it

Um..Gamespot, that's not a clear NO. If anything, they are being tricky with their wording. Unless there is more context that you're not providing- that quote is anything but confirming that there are no microtransactions.

They've probably just found a new way to nickel and dime people to death.

Hah, I'll believe that when I see it. What they didn't mention was DLCs, of which I'm sure we'll see tons. We'll most likely have map packs and weapon packs and skins and all sorts of "extra" stuff that may or may not be a power boost but will be cosmetic. So even though it's not in the game (technically not a microtransaction if not in game?) it will be DLC that players who are into the game will feel compelled to purchase to stay competitive.

The game is so rushed they probably didn't have time to add them. They would if they could. The fact that there is a multi-tiered currency system is a give away.

Don't worry, they'll almost certainly be patching them in after release.

@Moonco: Maybe yes, maybe no. What's worse? Earning currency that allows you to actually buy the weapons and attachments that you want, or a stupid XP unlock system that forces you to use an inferior gun every time you unlock one just so you can earn attachments and turn it into a gun that competes with what you used to have (not to mention being forced to unlock weapons in a set order)? I can't imagine anything more grindy than the XP system that Battlefield 4 uses.

It truly is sad when a game not having microtransactions makes headlines. It is even sadder when people are shocked by the news.

But being realistic, it won't need microtransactions to still be a bum deal for gamers. I promise you, there will be map packs. LOTS of map packs.

Sounds like we'll get 4 DLC map packs at $15 each that split up the community then. Too bad a game can't have no MT's and all the DLC free.

No DLC and no Micro transactions, no buy. What they expect me to buy the game once and never pay for it again? How am I supposed to get new skins and better weapons to kill the noobs? Actually play the game and get better? Oh well... back to candy crush.
