No PS4 Pro Patch for Until Dawn

Supermassive's horror game is not being patched to support the new console.

Until Dawn developer Supermassive Games confirmed today that it has "no plans" to optimize the PlayStation 4-exclusive for Sony's soon-to-launch PS4 Pro console. The developer said this on Twitter in response to community questions.

Although Until Dawn is not being enhanced for PS4 Pro, the game's PlayStation VR version--Rush of Blood--will indeed have improved graphical quality on the new console. Check out GameSpot's roundup to see a list of all the games that are being patched to support PS4 Pro and those that aren't.

The $400 PS4 Pro features a 1 TB hard drive and launches at retailers this coming Thursday, November 10. An excerpt from GameSpot's PS4 Pro review follows below.

"Should you buy a PlayStation 4 Pro? If you have a 4K HDR TV and are looking to buy a console, I'd definitely recommend the PS4 Pro," reviewer Jimmy Thang said. "Even if you have a 1080p TV and are looking to buy a PlayStation, I'd still lean more toward the Pro. Yes, it does cost $100 more than the Slim model, but you get more ports, twice the storage space, more future-proof hardware in the event that you ever decide to get a 4K TV, and some games can look slightly better at 1080p.

"If you already have a PS4, however, I wouldn't make the upgrade unless you have a 4K HDR TV and the extra cash lying around. Graphics enthusiasts may appreciate the improved anti-aliasing and more vibrant colors, but the differences likely won't blow most people away."

A little disappointing, as while the game looks great, it definitely ran into some frame-rate issues at times.

@BigPrimeNumbers: I wonder whether the extra horsepower the PS4 Pro has will improve performance even without a graphical patch.

@dwbtd: without a patch, half of the cores will be turned off anyway so I doubt there will be noticeable improvements.

Didn't play much yet, but I tried it on Pro and FPS is still far from optimal. Too bad, the game could really use that extra power, 1440p with stable 30FPS shouldn't be too hard to implement (it doesn't require tweaking individual assets, just some settings here and there).

@igorphoenix: Hmm, didn't know about the way the Pro turns off some of the horsepower. Oh well.

I played through Until Dawn during Extra Life and I only had a couple of instances of really noticeable stutters, so I don't think it necessarily needs to have a Pro mode (but of course, it would be nice).

@dwbtd: it's not that bad in terms of momentary slowdowns but the game is pretty much constantly running at sub-30 FPS and that kinda detracts from the experience (well, that and some weird facial animations). It's not that kind of game where FPS is critical but still, why not, it's not like the patch would require remaking the game from scratch.

But I'm sure they have their reasons.

Honestly, this is one game I'd say didn't need it. It looks amazing as is.

@joshrmeyer: this is true. the atmosphere and lighting were fantastic. character models could have used a bit of work with the lip synching and facial animations at times, but otherwise great production values all around.

This is unacceptable because all Sony's exclusives should atleast take advantage of the Ps4pro. This is another case of Sony half stepping on their ideas. I just feel if they were going to commit to a more power Ps4 they could atleast make sure all of their exclusive games cross-over with patches.

@kentray1985: it is third party game. third party developers can do as they please for older titles... only new titles from here on out are required to release a pro patch.

@kentray1985: They don't own supermassive games so they cant force them to give it 4k support.

@gamingdevil800: Not directly, but as the publisher they can mess with companies who don't support their gamer-milking initiatives. Supermassive could find that there are significantly more stipulations to the deal the next time they pitch a game idea to Sony. As the console maker, you always have a fair degree of control, as long as the software developer isn't so huge and in-demand that you truly need their game on your console.

as much as I liked this game, the FPS was atrocious.

@hansond_jaysond_lee: it was? i just played through it recently and only noticed some jittering with the animations during some of the custscenes/quicktime events. otherwise, the walking sections looked like a stable 30fps.

@edinko: i don't get why you even bother to comment on articles that are about console games in the first place. we get it... you hate consoles and console games. why not go to a pc-centric site where you can kiss everyone's ass and join hands while you praise 120fps and 8k specs all day?

@edinko: i don't hate pc considering i game on pc form time to time. what i dislike is pc elitists who bash consoles every chance they get... all the debates you see are a result of console gamers defending themselves and what they enjoy. nothing more. someone who goes into an article about a console game and bashes it due to the frame rate... exactly what you did... that is what i am talking about. what a completely worthless thing to do.

@Xristophoros: Did you actually read my comment? I didnt say 1 word about the game itself I was bashing bad framerates. That applies both to console and pc games.30 fps is atrocious no matter where or when

@edinko: by bashing the framerate you are inherently bashing the game and the platform. of course, you had nothing positive to say about the game itself so when someone reads your comment, assumptions are going to be made. it is the pc mentality... do you mean to tell me that if every console game suddenly were to run at 1080p/60 these debates would stop? not a chance. there are pc gamers who refuse to ever play uncharted 4 due to it being 30 fps... that's what you call being elitist and stuck up.

@Xristophoros: it would probably stop. While there are people like you say they are some minority. I personnaly really dont like naughty dog games Last of us is one of the most boring games I had the bad luck to play. I couldnt even finish it I just quit after being beyond the half or so.The bad framerate there was just icing on the cake. I personally get sick of 30 fps. NAusea and motion sickness.
