Nvidia Stands Up For Microsoft After UK Blocks Activision Merger

"We see this as a benefit to cloud gaming and hope for a positive resolution."

Nvidia has spoken up in support of Microsoft following the recent news that the UK's Competition & Markets Authority is moving to block the sale of Activision Blizzard to the Xbox company.

Nvidia's GeForce Now Twitter account said the service and other cloud gaming providers would "stand to gain an even deeper catalog of games" if the deal is allowed to go through. The company added, "We see this as a benefit to cloud gaming and hope for a positive resolution."

Microsoft recently signed a 10-year deal with Nvidia to bring Call of Duty games and other Activision Blizzard titles to GeForce Now if the deal goes through. GeForce Now allows subscribers to stream games to their machines without the need for powerful local hardware. Members can connect their Steam, Ubisoft, EA, and Epic Games accounts and stream games they own. New titles are added to the library--which already has 1,500 titles--every Thursday.

The CMA said it's blocking the Microsoft deal in the UK primarily over concerns about the cloud gaming market. Microsoft did not agree with the CMA's findings, with president Brad Smith saying the CMA made its decision based on faulty reasoning. Activision Blizzard CEO Bobby Kotick criticized the announcement, too, saying cloud gaming makes up an "inconsequential" component of the wider gaming industry right now.

Microsoft and Activision Blizzard are now preparing an appeal. Analyst Michael Pachter said he believes Microsoft could offer a remedy to the CMA by agreeing to not put Activision Blizzard's games on Game Pass in the UK.

Beyond the UK, the EU is set to hand down a decision by May 22, and in the US, the FTC's first evidentiary hearing is set for August 2023.

i guess, but cma probably see this as bad thing, since sony doesn't have their cloud gaming as strong as microsoft's xbox cloud gaming, some of the sony fans might go to other service that has it.

@Slannmage: Of course and there is nothing wrong with that as there number one goal is to make a profit and they are not a charity.

Sounds like smoke and mirrors to me. I'm pretty sure the U.K. read the fine print on the proposed deals regarding ABK titles on other platforms and smelt blood in the water regarding the lack of an actual revenue split with each of the platforms in question, with all of it going to Microsoft.

All they have to do is remove the single point of contention. Have Activision sell Call of Duty in all its iterations to Microsoft. They would not need such wide approve for that.

After that’s done, Activision could sell Blizzard to Microsoft in what would be seen as a much smaller deal. Then it is a done deal.

However, if they get approval for the sale through all other countries, they could just cease operations in the UK, unless they reverse their position.

@p3rrypm: They could if they want and both sides will lose UK, MS, and Sony as MS did say it would not be exclusive and again they may do just that withdraw and deal with the percussions of doing so and Sony will still lose.

The only way to beat this deal is that ABK and Microsoft should form a independent entity in the U.K. handle the U.K. operations for the ABK games, but they won't get gamepass. Or they can do this both ABK and Microsoft pull all operations away from the U.K. and let them be. With that the Politicians and CMA will have to deal their own problems when it comes why their gamers would become so angry when that happens.

This block is weird and all of the platforms and cloud platforms was gonna get cod and most of the ABK ips sometime in the future. It was like they didn't want to hear anything positive about this deal and just want to blocked it automatically.

As someone who doesn't really care about Activision's games (besides the older ones), this whole thing is hilarious to watch from the sidelines.

Seeing the console fanboys, rife with anxiety over the final ruling, going through emotional highs and lows every week, it's hilarious.
