Nvidia "Unlaunches" RTX 4080 12GB, Saying Its Name Is "Confusing"

The 16GB model that shares the 4080 name will still release on November 19.

23 Comments

Nvidia "unlaunched" the 12GB RTX 4080 after community backlash concerning the shared name with the 16GB RTX 4080.

In a blog post on the Nvidia website, the company explained, "The RTX 4080 12GB is a fantastic graphics card, but it’s not named right. Having two GPUs with the 4080 designation is confusing." The post also confirms that the 16GB model is on track to release on November 16.

The 12GB model was original planned to launch alongside the 16GB model. Despite having the same name, the two GPUS are quite different under the hood, which caused confusion and criticism. The 16GB GDDR6X memory model has 76 RT cores, 9,728 CUDA cores, and a memory with a 22Gbps throughput and 256-bit bus. The 12GB GDDR6X memory model has 60 RT, 7,680 CUDA, and a slower memory with 21Gbps throughput and 192-bit bus. The difference also shows up in price. The 16GB will start at $1199 and the 12GB would have started at $899. Additionally, according to a report from the Hardware Times, the 12GB 4080 only outperformed the 3080 model by 12% and ran slower than the 3090 Ti.

The unlaunch means that there will not be a mid-range graphics card alongside alongside the 16GB 4080. There has been no word as to whether Nvidia will release the 12GB 4080 under a different name.

@zerojuice:

They didn't do it initially because doing so would cost them a few hundred dollars. I'm sure they will eventually release the card and name it 4070, but I wouldn't be surprised if they drop the specs a bit and still make money and rip off the customer as well.

It is confusing, exactly what Nvidia wanted, and they wanted PC gamers to buy a 70-class aka RTX 4070 card for way more money.

I bet that this will just be rebranded to an actual 4070, as it should be since day one revealing the 4000 series. Oh and drop the price to $600 Nv'greedia. You can afford it and you don't need to be anti-consumer...you have done that yourself.

oh c'mon ... I was eager for the 4080 12 GB release, and now I'll have to wait even more. I didn't find the naming so confusing. What's worse is prob having to wait even more for something closer to an entry-level 4000 GPU, as there's no 4070 atm and the prices for the 4080 16 GB and 4090 are a bit prohibitive.

Edit: Or just rename it to 4070 TI or 4070 Super :-)

Not sure why people think it's a 4060. It's a 4070. A03 is in the name. All A03 cards are 70 models. No way Nvidia would over engineer a 60 model to beat last generations 80 model regardless of how greedy they are.

NVIDIA's past and present are littered with shady s***.

From bribing game devs to cripple performance on competitors' products in the 90s, review embargoes, deliberately reshuffling/renaming old crap to confuse consumers, lying about the pricing/features of the 3000 series cards, allll that BS with crippling their own products around the crypto mess, and now this slimy nonsense with the 4080 cards.

And I still haven't forgotten the s*** they pulled with every single GTX 970 card and its 4GB, including the one in my PC right now.

192 bus is way too slow for a $500+ card.

Gamers love to grumble about all sorts of things, but Nvidia is one of the few that deserve it. They do some super shady stuff.

@xavier141524: it's a 70 model A03 designation. All 70 models are A03. 60 is A04. Same shit though.

It's not confusing, it's a different product. Nvidia is making it sound like the consumer is at fault because they are confused. The consumer knows when a business is being underhanded and this is it.

Changing the VRAM size is common within the same model cards, but not changing the computing cores.

@sebb: They can't accept responsibility. If anything to do with this ever ended up in court it would be used against them. Business's will never definitively say they were at fault unless it is so blatant there is no talking their way around it.

@spectral: capitalism at its finest. Designed to **** over the customer and profit the rich. Between that and communism we seem to be fucked whichever way we go. I'd say this has to do with human nature, more precisely greed.

@sebb: oh brother. Another misguided person. Go live in Venezuela and beg for scraps then. Without capitalism, we would not have all these great games to play or these innovative cards to play them with. Innovation is driven by profit. Is the government going to give you a 4090?

@sail2thestars: profit at any cost, right? At the cost of screwing over the customer, right? At the cost of physically harming people maybe? At the cost of possible nuclear annihilation? Where does it stop? What are the limits of capitalism?

Imo capitalism is better than the alternatives but there has to be restrictions and companies have to be responsible, or the whole thing will be out of control. That's why we have regulators.
