Nvidia's RTX 3070 And 3080 Pricing Is Downright Surprising

The surprisingly good pricing of both the RTX 3070 and RTX 3080 add another factor to consider during the end-of-year upgrade cycle.

After weeks of rumors and leaks, Nvidia finally revealed three new GPUs in its RTX 30 series, all sporting the new Ampere architecture underneath. If there's one thing speculation before the event drove home, it was that these cards were going to be expensive. And while that's certainly true for the flagship, Nvidia uncharacteristically got very aggressive with the pricing for the two cards most people will likely buy.

Nvidia revealed the RTX 3070, the RTX 3080, and the RTX 3090 during its GeForce Special Event, which Nvidia billed as the biggest generational leap forward in the last 20 years of GPUs. On paper, those claims seem sound. The RTX 3070 was described as faster than Turing's flagship card, the RTX 2080 Ti, while the RTX 3080 boasts twice the performance of the RTX 2080. The RTX 3090, this generation's Titan card, is in a league of its own--and with a price point of $1500, it's not for even most enthusiast PC builds.

The pricing on both the RTX 3070 and RTX 3080 came as a bit of a shock though. The least powerful card in Nvidia's new range boasts better performance that its previous flagship while also costing less than half. Today, a RTX 2080 Ti can still run just over $1000 (not far off what it launched at), while the RTX 3070 launches at just $500 in October.

The RTX 3080 then strikes a good balance between appreciable performance gains while also being reasonably priced compared to the previous generation. The RTX 2080 Super--Nvidia's mid-generation refresh for the RTX 2080--launched at $700. While Nvidia says the RTX 3080 is twice as fast as the original RTX 2080, it's priced at the same $700 as its Super variant. That makes it a much sounder purchasing decision, eliminating the RTX 2080 Super's position in the market without a considerable price cut.

Pricing like this certainly aims at next-generation consoles, too, despite Microsoft and Sony still holding out on specifics for the Xbox Series X and PS5 respectively. While even the RTX 3070 alone might be in the region of a full next-gen console from a price perspective, Nvidia made a compelling case to consider PC. As Digital Foundry's Alexander Battaglia picked up, Nvidia used Microsoft's standard of reporting teraflops to paint a clear picture between the Xbox Series X and both its Turning and new Ampere architecture.

While not naming cards specifically, Turing has an expected peak of 34 TFlops performance, while Ampere boasts 58 TFlops. Compared to the Xbox Series X's 13 TFlops--a figure higher than the PS5 already--it's a massive leap ahead on metrics alone. It must be stressed that even $500 is still a lot of money for a GPU, especially during this year where the COVID-19 pandemic has stressed many people financially. But within the context of next-generation consoles arriving later this year, it's a comparison that Nvidia is sensibly making.

AMD, the manufacturer behind the RDNA 2-powered Xbox Series X and PS5, has yet to unveil its own consumer GPUs using its latest architecture. Considering what might be in the pipeline, Nvidia's aggressive approach might be in anticipation of a performance and market-share fight that the company hasn't had to pay too much attention too over the past couple of years.

All these figures and estimations need to be tested of course, which will happen as early as September 17 when Nvidia launches the RTX 3080. The monstrous RTX 3090 is expected this September too, while the RTX 3070 launches in October.

Seems like a good time to upgrade. By the way, mods, I've been having an issue where I am unable to randomly post replies and try to inform the mods of this problem. Basically, it says I've too many flags and when trying to create a thread to ask the mods my Karma's too high. Could someone please look into this?

The prices are the same as the last generation. I don't understand why people are "surprised". The 2080 was $700 at launch and so is the 3080. Similarly, the 2070 and 3070 are $500 at launch. Sure, the prices could be higher 2 years later but I am by no means happy with the price tag.

Those 3070 cards are not going to be available at those prices. They're going to sell out and anyone who has one will be scalping it for more than $500.

I still go for series x and ps5 just like now that I am using xbox one x and ps4 pro, the pc part pricing is so high in my country that it is not worth it to buy hardware anymore so with a price of I think 800$ I can get two very powerful systems which are very capable. I had gaming pc before the last one was a 980 Ti and 6600 K. after that i could not buy nvidia high end graphic card. 1500$ and 800 $ are very expensive for me I meet people who bought rtx 2080 and 2080 ti and still didnot get that sweet lock performance on 4K and those card are really expensive yet they didnot deliver on RTX aspect much.

I still want to play the next god of war and not even 2 3090 tixxx RTX GTX !!LOL can convince me to go and buy 1500$ card.

@rzagtx: You are missing 3060, rumored to be less than $400 and still crush consoles. People just talk about 70 and up and are ignoring the hole 60 mid range that is better in comparison with a new console cicle every time there is one. It's part of Nvidia's strategy to wait till consoles price reveal before announcing 3060 for sure.

On the other hand 3090, even 3080 imho, is just for enthusiast gamers. No need to buy any of those revealed to be in pair with consoles. Those people you mention did not had the performance on 4k you expected, but they did had better graphics than consoles nontheless. Every single game on console, always, is at most mid settings in comparison with the pc port. And most games aiming to consoles have really crap pc ports, another issue added to that performance you did not liked at all. As I say probably because the just turned up too high settings that are not needed at all to pair console fidelity.

@ganondorf77: Why is anyone comparing GPU's to consoles given what else you need to spend to use them?

@ganondorf77: graphic is not every thing. There are games on console that blow pc graphics out of the water. God of war and last of us part 2 are visually stunning so.. For me i dont care about graphics. Children of morta for example is one of my favorite games. I do play AAA titles a lot but graphics are not every thing. Those people spent 1000$ on a thing that didnot delivered and they became nvidia'stest lab. Consols are the way to go specially with seris x.

I do not care at all about graphic fidelity.. your argument is valid... but 80% of console gamers go just all for graphics, and believe there will always be better those from consoles fr the money. You buy a 1000$ pc from scratch to be in pair with consoles, that's true, but if you consider everything carefully you can go under $150/year with hardware ever since then, and when 16 years have passed you do notice how cheapper pc could really be. I will buy a 3060 because my last graphics was 960, and I've been really fine with it. If you buy consoles obviouslly it's because it's confortable to be in the couch (I do that with my pc but ok), because the exclusives (something I really hate it exist at all but ok), and nothing else, for sure nothing else, and that's ok, of course.

@rzagtx: Graphics is everything, it assists with artificial neural learning, it allows the creation of amazing things, it pushes laptops beyond comprehension when installed inside a external GPU hub, it can calculate stuff a CPU can't in parallel clusters, it can create facial recognition in deep neural algorithms and achieve deepfakes, it can hack bitcoins that are not popular right now, and explode in possibilities.

If you purchased the Xbox series X it would cost you $150 a year or less to keep a console for 5 years, for the new Nvidia GPU, roughly between $300 a year or $500 for 5 years.

Graphics are everything baby.

Oh sorry, I think I understand what you mean.

What are you talking about? 3060 will last more than a new gen console cycle, like 3070 will, and 80 and 90 could even more pass 6 years in the future... I never ever spent more than $100/year in graphics, ever, i'm under $150/year with my entire rig since i started it 16 years ago. Of course I don't game with the highest res ever, but almost always everything maxed out at any time for the last 16 years, at least 1080p30, 1080p60 most of that time, which is more than any console in any moment. Exclusives save consoles of course... ok.

@rzagtx: Reason it "blows PC graphics out of the water" is bc Exclusives maximize the hardwares power (combined with familiarity as years go by)
Whereas all other games on PC arent exclusive to one specific hardware config.

But when a studio makes one exclusive to PC and decide to push the current hardwares limits, then u get games like Crysis 1 where it outdid all games graphically, even console exclusives till 2015/2016. (a good 9 years, where they finally culd match Crysis)

Besides buying a GPU like RTX 3000 series (especially 3090) can last u a good 8 or more years
Whereas consoles u hav to pay another one after 5-7 yrs are up, if u want to play the next set of games.

Also lets not forget about other brands tht might sell cheaper variations of the RTX 3000 series.

Even launch models of Series X and PS5 will make early adopters as "test lab". To help figure out any thermal issues, hardware failures, etc. (and clean up possible clunky UI); So later they wuld release "Slim" models tht hav all the fixes and QoL updates.

@firepistol95: i still have ps3 fat and its working fine.i have ps4pro day one and it is fine. I spent only 250 on them. I bought x 350$ !lol go and find a system at 350 $ price point that can do what x does. I had 8800 gt at the crysis release with cor2quad a very highend dystem at that time. 25 years veteran gamer here i know how the system works and Ps5 is a one time purchase. No one makes exlusive aaa game For 5000$ pc because 0.1% userbase even 90% of steam users Are using 1050 970or 1060ti. Console is the way to go and nvidia can milk those who are ok with nvidia scams i dont buy their bs hardware. Thay are angry beacuse amd has control on the gaming industry and all the hardware design is from amd so they try to sell 800and 1500$ cards lol. Goodluck with your 1500$ graphic oh and soon another 1000$ super verion come out that has more grunt than your 1500$ purchase.

@rzagtx: So wht ur systems are "working fine"? I never said they were designed to fail. Any hardware tht launches will always be "test lab" as u hav said urself. and give improved in ireative updates aka Slim models (or for GPUs other brands make their improvements on the cards for higher boost clocks, better thermals, card sizes, etc.)

and u fail to realize tht u can find cheaper cards via 2nd hand market and after a 1st time build, its cheaper upgrading piece by piece compared to building a whole new PC.

Also I never said tht ppl will build a game tht is exclusive to PC. Only in rare cases nowadays, in terms of a AAA budget. I used Crysis as an example if a Dev decided to do it again and push boundaries. Showing tht PC CAN outdo console exclusives graphically if they wanted to, DESPITE anyones most common hardware rigs.

PS5 is of course a one time purchase. I mean having to buy the next $500 system after to play the next gen games once the launch year cross gen titles are done. If ur lookin for future games when they let previous gen die out slowly.

Besides Nvidia is extremely popular for GPUs (where AMD is for CPUs) and u dont ha to buy ON BRAND, u can buy other brands tht will make those cards. (MSI, EVGA, Zotac, etc.) Where they can be cheaper and 2nd hand market of used cards can go even cheaper.

and ur build can outlast a current gen console as I hav said, even when they move to the PS6 u can still use ur current pc rig to play the games without having to worry about buying the next system.

For someone who is a "25yr vet gamer" and owned a PC build, u sure talk out of ur ass and very misinformed. I've only got into BUILDING a PC 5 months ago and went into research to know wht im doin. (and b4 then I've watched and read tech for 4 years bc I hav genuine interest in technology pertaining to gamin)

U and me hav only a 5 yr difference in "gaming exp". But seems u dont research in the fun tht is hardware and software in tech, especially when it comes to gaming.

How long hav u been away from PC gaming? Im sure its been a long while, otherwise u wuldnt b talkin about ur "feelings" on it, instead of logic.

This culd've been a nice convo but u had to be a triggered asshole.

Definitely building a new PC instead of buying a PS5/Xbox this year. The RTX 3080 wil be a perfect fit for my 4K living room setup.

I love my consoles, but it's been really nice hooking my PC up in my living room. I want to be able to utilize my setup to it's fullest potential.

RTX 3080 will have no problem doing that.

@hitomi69: I always have a beefed up PC, but I also always get the new playstation, because there are games I want that you simply can't get on PC.

I've also bought the xbox of every generation, but finally hitting the brakes on that with series X. My XBONE did nothing but collect dust until I sold it on ebay. If you have a good PC, there is really no reason to own an xbox unless you really need their online experience because that's what all your friends are on.

@Bamda: in 3 years at most for each cycle? of course they have to worry, i'm not upgrading a new gen cpu+mobo+32 ram in less than 6, even 7 years. And mid range 3060 is missing, and still will be better for less than $400 perhaps.

@Bamda: You say that until a hardware refresh is due for Sony/Microsoft in 3 years. To put it in perspective, the PS4 launched in November 15th, 2013. Pro launched in November 10th, 2016. Technically, the PS4 wasn't even 3 years old yet!

While not everyone upgraded to the PS4 Pro or Xbox One X when they came out, the hardware of the launch systems clearly showed their age in 2016 and it was not a great experience playing some of these games unless you upgraded. I upgraded to the Pro when Spider-Man came out. I had a 4K TV at the time, so of course I wanted the full experience...after spending another $400 on a new console.

With the success of the PS4 Pro, do not be surprised if Sony or MS will do the same thing again. Are you prepared to spend ~$800 in the course of 3 years, or are you going to deal with outdated hardware when newer games come out in the future?

That sort of thing may not matter to most people up front, but it is a factor to consider since 4K TV's are more common, and hooking up your PC in the living room is becoming a normal thing to do.

I'm at the point now where I'm just going to wait until the hardware refresh comes out, unless there are no first party titles I care for. I love console and PC gaming but after building a gaming PC strictly for my living room (wireless xbox controllers/PS4 bluetooth), it's really tough justifying these new consoles in 2020.

There's no games out yet that fully utilize the RTX 2000-series or its ray-tracing feature. So this is just really future-proofing.

Probably since most game devs target the twin consoles (PlayStation/Xbox) while PC version tend to just be slightly higher-resolution versions of console games.

So maybe PS5 games will look like "PS6" games on an RTX 3000-series GPU.

My 1080 is still serving me well, but is starting to show its age. Ultimately I'm glad I decided to hold off on the 2080, which I felt wasn't special enough to warrant its price. The 3080 however definitely is. Pre-order!

I will get a PS5 but I want a PC with the RTX 3080. I just saw the Digital Foundry video on it, and if there is a version of future proof, that's it. I will wait a bit though. Developers need to take advantage of the ray tracing and stuff.
