NYCC 2019: Ms. Marvel Revealed As Avengers Game's Main Character

The Inhuman takes center stage.

Despite the game's title, Marvel's Avengers aren't the stars of the show. As revealed at New York Comic-Con 2019, Ms. Marvel is the main character of Crystal Dynamics' upcoming game.

"An optimistic fangirl of the Avengers, Kamala Khan is the perfect character for the story we're telling in Marvel's Avengers," Crystal Dynamics creative director and writer Shaun Escayg said in a press release. "Telling our story of Kamala's coming-of-age brings a fresh, hopeful perspective to the gameplay experience and her unique abilities as Ms. Marvel makes her a character every person can relate to and will want to play."

Now Playing: Why Ms. Marvel Is The Real Hero Of The Avengers Game

"I think Kamala is a perfect fit for a game like this, since she sees the Marvel world the same way we do as fans and players," Ms. Marvel's co-creator G. Willow Wilson added. "Kamala allows us to imagine what we ourselves would do if we suddenly discovered we had superpowers and got to stand alongside our heroes in their time of greatest need."

For those unfamiliar, Kamala Khan burst onto the superhero scene in 2013, quickly growing popular for her relatable struggles, quirky humor, and heroic spirit. She's also a comic book icon as Marvel's first openly Muslim hero. Kamala is your everyday teenage girl who loves superheroes and idolizes Carol Danvers, the first Ms. Marvel and current Captain Marvel. After becoming an Inhuman with the ability to stretch and grow any part of her body (which she dubs "embiggening"), Kamala adopts the mantle of Ms. Marvel and becomes a costumed crimefighter. She's teamed up with Spider-Man, the Secret Warriors, and the Avengers.

After a confusing reveal for Marvel's Avengers, Crystal Dynamics announced it was changing pretty much "everything" about the game prior to launch and that Marvel is closely involved in the process of developing the game. Our subsequent time with the game has helped shed light on how the game plays--a superhero game that offers cinematic single- and multiplayer missions.

Interesting choice to have it star a b-level character. But then again, the guardians of the galaxy were kind of a b-level comic until the movie's great success. Wonder if the next game will star squirrel girl. That would be awesome.

I’ve had zero interest in this ever since the first gameplay video released. It just doesn’t look good. I feel like it’s going to end up getting a 5 and flopping.

Now I'm even more interested, a sixth playable character. Those big hands will do some damage.

Why are white men so threatened? They prefer that all media to have a white male as the archetype or template. I'm sorry for you, but no more Disney mammy characters or Negro blackbird characters. No more bucked toothed Asian characters. Clearly Disney knows their racist awful past history, and clearly they want to change it.

Anyone concerned with the graphics should definitely stick with the PC version of course as Digital Foundry has confirmed that the PC version is stunning having played it first hand, but the console versions (particularly PS4 Pro) left them deeply concerned with choppy frame rates, and no per object motion blur, oh and wait for it... a checkerboard rendered solution.

If the main character is going to be Ms. Marvel, pass. It's got nothing to do with her gender, nationality or anything else allegedly controversial...I just think her power set is pretty lame. If they wanted to go the route of rookie hero moving to the big leagues, they should've given us a character creator. That would've been an instant buy for me.

Who cares? This game will be a crap anyway, without her or not.

Having Square-Enix as publisher already made me to stay away from this crap.

Everything shown of this game feels underwhelming. The character design looks uninspired, bland setting, questionable voice acting for certain characters, gameplay looks floaty with no real impact to showcase the power of the heroes.

I hope the game turns out great but after viewing each trailer the game feels its missing something to make it truly standout.

Seems strange to make an Avengers game, right when the MCU has just been at its height, show off the main characters from those movies in the reveal and subsiqent trailers ... and then say, "But the MAIN character is this lesser know super hero who hasn't been in the MCU at all." Isn't the target audience for this game going to want the main movie characters to be the core of this game?

But then I thought it was weird they didn't use Disney money to get the voices and likenesses of the actors either. So I guess I really don't know what's up with this game.

Reading comments related to gender on gaming websites makes me sympathize with Anita Sarkeesian, which I never thought I would say but in ways gaming communities have become so toxic when involving gender or race.

@magneisuemwinterjuice: Or they just don’t like the character in general? Was there this big of an uproar for Horizon Zero Dawn or Uncharted: The Lost Legacy? Maybe it’s because Ms. Marvel isn’t the first thing you think of when you hear “The Avengers”?

No doubt there are those who hate just because it’s a woman, but don’t generalize over everything.

She a perfect fit due to both being popular with fans and not being a character that's been a member of the Avengers like 400 times already, so she can function in that "fish out of water" role to learn about the inner workings of the Avengers organization.

@Redblaze27: That's a fine thought, but this game isn't called "Ms. Marvel". It's called "Avengers" and was heavily positioned as something so much more. Now it just feels like a kick in the pants.

I think this paired with the announcement that “everything” is changing suggests this is still very much a work in progress. Having a young fan type who is also a burgeoning superhero is fine as a POV character for fans, but it’s a bit curious they put an established character in that role when that would usually be occupied by a player generated original avatar.

@izraal: avatars are so seen. with that they have to make narrative sacrifices and gameplay sacrifices. now they can focus on what the stretch girl can do and say. have the game revolve around marvel instead of some randok non canon character

though if they really chose kamala i dare to wonder if having mr fantastic as alternative would have hurt anything. they could even boost replay value by having basically 2 plots. kamala is a fan of avengers. mr fantastic hangs around because the rest of team died or disappeared

@PrpleTrtleBuBum:

I suppose I should clarify, I’m not suggesting one as better than the other. The article mentioned how much of the game was still having changes. I wonder if a player created avatar was the original design, and they chose to place a canon character in that role instead, later on.

It’s all purely speculation, as is anything at this point.

@moonco: Carol Danvers used to be Miss Marvel, until PC Disney decided to make her Captain Marvel, then created Kamala so that Muslims could have superhero representation in the Marvel Universe. I've been iffy about this game since it was first shown, now I don't care for it anymore.

@alex33x: you clearly know a lot about comics and obviously are a big fan of the original captain marvel and read all the issues about him that (with a few exceptions in between) have not been published since 1979.

Obviously they only made her Captain Marvel because the totally evil Disney (who‘s evil plan is to conquer the world by creating a diverse representation of the world‘s population) made them do it...not because it made sense for the character to pick up the mantle after her mentor had died

And how dare they create a muslim character...and even worse...they did it in a multiple Eisner award winning comic. The fact that they would use one of the most successful newly created characters in this game is a disgrace.

That's pretty funny. Though I wasn't interested in it, I had thought 'wow finally a proper superhero game that's not Batman'.

This isn't a bad idea in a vacuum, but I'm sure most people just wanna play with the iconic superheroes, not the 4th Ms Marvel, this is dipping into too many sauces to be a great game like Arkham.

Kamala Khan is very lame and not popular at all. she doens't have any great stories of her own, she has some fun moments in other books but her own series hasn't done her any justice, many other superheroes have done the superhero while in school thing and her sctick is to fan girl out whenever she is around another hero.

if you guys use your free trial of Marvel Unlimited go read her stuf on the app or the website, its trash

also for what its worth on Marvel Ultimate Alliance 3 whenever i play coop on line with randoms she is rarely ever chosen

so idk where this "she is a popular recognizable character" stuff comes from but also keep in mind that the person who is VP of Marvel and behind its global marketing is a girl named Sana Amnat...so let that put things in perspective for you

@alastor529: Oh, its a lie. You dont reboot a series that is popular, every 6 months. Its a garbage character because shes written badly, by bad writers. Ms Marvel has dumb powers, and has never had an interesting story, so unless you pretend to like her because of some political agenda dependent completely on her skin color.....which is the racism of white virtue signalers......there is nothing about her that is worthy of a video game.

The game will tank.....maybe it was always going to....but now its guaranteed.

@titan6669:Just checked Comichron. Ms. Marvel Vol.9 Trade, written by G Willow Wilson, sold 2,923 in the year of it's release (2018), becoming the 297th most popular graphic novel of the year. Ms. Marvel Vol 1 outsold it in that same year (4,416, 126th). Which is... really odd. Either there's an extreme move to digital, or the series is really losing sales. Or the first volume sells well but fails to provide strong incentive for readers to continue the series, which is not good for the series, despite the volume itself having some legs.

It sells... okay, but I wouldn't call her mainstream. Though she's still among Marvel's best that aren't Avengers members, Spider-man, X-Men, or Deadpool, but there's many more DC and even Image properties outselling it by a mile. I can see why Marvel are interested in trying to push the character further, but it's still a push into the mainstream, and not one of it's strongest properties.

Not sure how I feel about this.

On the one hand I think it’s a smart move to center the story around a not as familiar character that takes on the role of the audience in some way as they discover things that other more seasoned members wouldn’t already know but at the same time choosing an actual character from the marvel universe that, let’s just call it what it is, isn’t really known and will no doubt be confused with Captain Marvel from the recent Avengers movie might turn some off completely.

I will admit, when I heard the news that Ms. Marvel was the main character I thought this was perhaps for some other mobile or spin off title; not the main Avengers game that was getting so much play from the gaming media.

Imagine my reaction when I realized it wasn’t.

It’s not that I think there is no way they can pull it off, but I think I would feel the same way if they said the main character of this new title was Colossus, Winter Soldier, or even Hawkeye. Those are all great characters but I just don’t get the same feeling that an entire game (especially a huge one like this.) should be centered around them.

Then again, my knowledge of the comic world is extremely limited. So, what do I know?

-Ya’ think, Ninja!?-

I would be more interested to hear what those gamers out there who are big into the comic scene have to say.

-CALLING ALL COMIC GEEKS NINJA APPROVED-

@videogameninja: I am not very familiar with Ms. Marvel outside of some Avengers Assemble appearances. I do like how she seems to have been a big fan of the Avengers as a kid, then grows up to want to use her powers for good and help them. I am not sure any other character would have fit that role (Besides Spider-Man).

I am more of a DC Fan (Or Dynamite .. Love Vampirella and their Army of Darkness Comics :D), so as of right now I think Kamala is a good random pick. Some times the less known heroes need to be in the spotlight and shine as bright as the titans they look up to.
