During today's Nintendo Direct, Square Enix revealed Octopath Traveler II, a brand-new game in the Octopath saga, which is due to release February 24 on Nintendo Switch.

The game will be set in the world of Solistia, a world of two massive continents separated by a great sea. The story of Octopath Traveler II will once again feature eight unique travelers with intertwining stories, with some paths differing depending on whether they're being explored during the day or at night. The eight heroes' names, according to the Square Enix blog, are as follows:

Now Playing: OCTOPATH TRAVELER II - Announcement Trailer - Nintendo Switch

  • Hikari, a Warrior
  • Agnea, a Dancer
  • Partitio, a Merchant
  • Osvald, a Scholar
  • Throné, a Thief
  • Temenos, a Cleric
  • Ochette, a Hunter
  • Castti, an Apothecary

Octopath Traveler II will once again employ the HD/2D graphics style that originated with the first Octopath game in 2018, and has since been employed by Triangle Strategy and the recent Live A Live remake. This new Octopath game is also confirmed to have no story connection to the previous titles, meaning new players will be able to jump in with no issue. However, the Break and Boost battle system from the first game will return, so players can still prepare for the sequel if they so choose.

Octopath Traveler II will tell a new story in the growing Octopath universe when it launches February 24 on PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Nintendo Switch, and PC via Steam. A Collector's Edition has also been announced, which will include an art book, a soundtrack, and miniature busts of all eight playable characters for $180.

Would you look at that. The first initial of each character’s name can be arranged to spell out “Octopath”.

Loved the first one! But like many of the comments already here, I wish the stories intertwined a bit. BUT there IS an ultimate end of the game - THE GATE OF FINIS. Easily my favourite moment of the game. The music during that quest is hauntingly beautiful.

This was very much the treat of the Direct for me. I was in love with the first game and this looks like an actual proper iteration of that idea.

I know people had issues with the lack of an intertwined story in the first one, but it was designed that way because you don't have to recruit other party members. My first run was a duo run with Tressa and Cyrus, and if their stories had intertwined in an actual meaningful way beyond road discussions here and there, I imagine it would have been a challenge to make each story feel complete individually.

It might have been too ambitious to attempt that for the first game when that wasn't the primary vision for the game. That said, I really look forward to seeing how they possibly solved that problem.

While I enjoyed the first Octopath, I was disappointed that the 8 travelers stories ... well just ended with no overall intermix of the stories to reach a final goal. And while the stories were pretty good for each of them, some of them just finished with a fizzle. IT would be nice if the sequel would finish their backstories and then all 8 go on to ... well you know, JPRG save the world/universe/a slime, etc type ending.

I wish there was more information on that.

Triangle strategy was awesome in its battle, but wow the 3 path story ending was such a let down. Better writing for the closures or at least some path that would allow a ending would be nice.

I do not like playing these types of games that have often open endings, or just origin story endings with no over arching ending. Great visual styles and combat.

Looking forward to this one. Really enjoyed the first one, but a couple travelers had meandering stories and the end game pacing slowed down. Reminded me of the end game portion of the first Bravely Default though not quite as bad.
