Oculus Rift devs hoping for "Matrix-level" virtual reality

Founder Palmer Luckey says VR tech today is "very crude," but could advance to all-new heights in the years ahead.

Oculus VR founder Palmer Luckey has high hopes for his company's Oculus Rift virtual reality headset and for the future of virtual reality overall.

No Caption Provided

Speaking with Eurogamer this week, Luckey said though virtual reality technology still has a ways to go, it could advance to the level of what was seen in The Matrix in the coming years.

"VR tech today is still very crude, but it's advancing rapidly," Luckey said. "I think in a few years, maybe a few decades depending on how lucky we are, we'll be able to get Matrix-level virtual reality."

Also in the interview, Oculus VR COO Laird Malamed said the company has held discussions with Microsoft and Sony about bringing the technology to consoles.

"They're a little busy," Malamed said. "We've chatted, but they're trying to bring their new consoles out. It's a possibility--it would work. It's the same thing as iOS--it could technically work, but the business side isn't there."

There's even the possibility that Microsoft and/or Sony are working on virtual reality headsets of their own. Malamed said he would welcome this move, because it would mean the market for virtual reality games is growing.

"They're big companies with lots of resources. For us we'd say good," he said. "With John Carmack coming over as our CTO, we've had a great Kickstarter campaign; they continue to be great supporters, but we're still a start-up. VR's had a lot of failures in the past, and so the more people that enter the market is good because developers that ultimately have to develop the content, they know they'll have people playing their games, which is better for all of us."

Malamed also revealed that more than 20,000 developer units of the Oculus Rift have been shipped since they became available earlier this year. Development kits are available today for $300 each.

Earlier this month, Doom studio id Software cofounder John Carmack joined Oculus VR as its chief technology officer.

You know, new technologies and new consoles are or fine and good, but IMHO the thing really holding back games today is level design. I mean, most games (that acutally have levels) either (a) have you navigating a linear path to your goal or (b) dump you in a flat landscape and have you jogging to whatever vague goals are set up for you.

Games like Deus Ex:HR and The Witcher have really tried to combine the best aspects from these two styles, but I feel that there is SO much more do be done in how adventure games are laid out.

Sony and Microsoft should release their own for more competition and it would keep us on our toes more and it should have been out long ago but now I see why its been a while. Its actually time we got into this since both consoles are competitive enough for some top notch games that are coming

!? That's some serious overstating. The only way you'll get Matrix level VR is to scoop out the brain and put the whole thing into a computer. Even if you just talk about the visual experience, getting computer graphics to be indistinguishable from reality is a LONG way away.

@K-A_L-A_D-U_R @Zloth2 Beam away, you've still got to have the graphics to send and right now we are nowhere near anything that looks very real. A single tree with rustling leaves, swaying in the wind can't hold up to close scrutiny in a video game. A realistic forest would be difficult to pull off in a few decades, never mind a world.

@K-A_L-A_D-U_R I think I commented in that article, too. ;) Graphics have improved in the past decade but doing that same improvement five times over still would be very lacking. Especially when it comes to physics. Do you have any idea the number of calculations that would need to be done to get all the leaves on a tree to move right and sway the branches with the wind (as opposed to just playing an animation)? Heaven help you if it's the Fall and some of those leaves are supposed to detach and settle to the ground in the wind!

Maybe by the time Oculus Rift 4 launches the Matrix level experience can be reached? In the year 2044 maybe? Kinda reminds me of the promise of the Ultra Nintendo 64 with the promise of CGI supercomputer Ultra poject reality graphics running at the Jurassic park movie level graphics. Running at over 100Megahertz.

The N64 didn't quite live up to that hype. The Oculus Rift won't either, at least not this version of it. Matrix level virtual Reality games are a long ways off and won't cost well over $700.00 for the Oculus system alone if tech can get to that level.

I can't wait for the consumer kit to come out (they are aiming for minimum 1080 res and want it even higher for the consumer launch).

Star Citizen

Eve: Valkyrie

Everquest Next (in the behind closed doors video they showed an oculus rift being used for development of the game).

It's going to be amazing playing these games with one.

Pretty bold claim. I'm more excited about what VR will accomplish in the short term.

Although it would be cool to be able to download knowledge directly to your brain.

Ok I'm all for the Rift but let's not jump the shark with the whole Matrix level VR bullshit. Did this guy even see The Matrix to know what he's saying? The Rift is visually immersive and that is great, but Matrix level VR would be actually feeling things physically in a dream like state. It's gonna be a very long time, if ever, before we see something of that nature.

@Dasim64 One way VR could be achieved is by having the headset intercept signals from the brain thus altering your sense of reality. I'm sure its more complicated than it sounds but with the rate of scientific discoveries, I wouldn't be surprised if it was accomplished in my lifetime.

@blegit97 @Dasim64 THe most intercepting signals from the brain will do is allow us to control game functions with our minds. That is already being accomplished for simple functions and may possibly advance in our lifetime to have a real use in gaming. However taking game signals and putting them back into the brain to fool the brain, and us, into thinking it is reality is another technology altogether and one that we won't be seeing any time soon.

@Dasim64 I agree. Besides, the Oculus Rift, if anything, can only be considered as imitating VR at best. It's still just a 3-D screen, with lenses and movement sensors. Calling that VR is technically incorrect.

I just had a crazy idea, Oculus Rift + Arma III.

The ultimate "Matrix" experience, it's like real war, boring most of the time with not to often action.

On a serious note, Should I get an Oculus Rift or a PS Vita?
I was gonna hold off on the Rift until I got better hardware, but apparently it uses a lower resolution so I should get more fps than my 1080p res correct?

@DIGN Right now? Go with the VITA. The consumer Rift is still maybe a year out, they haven't given a schedule. The dev kit isn't worth getting just to play games right now, only get that if you plan on playing in the SDK and developing games.

@Norb_ @DIGN I had originally planned on developing some kind of Sword Art Online MMO placeholder. However with school starting back up soon I'm not sure if I'd have the time to pursue such a task.
