Okami 2 Announced At The Game Awards

The legendary Hideki Kamiya is returning to direct the sequel to the critically acclaimed action-adventure game.

After nearly 20 years, Okami is back. Announced at The Game Awards 2024, Okami Sequel is the working title for the follow-up to 2006's Okami, a critically acclaimed action-adventure game beloved for its painterly visuals and beautiful retelling of Japanese mythology. As of right now, there is no release date for the title, but a brief teaser trailer shows us the return of its signature animation style and its main character, the sun goddess Okami Amaterasu.

Also returning to Okami is its creator, Hideki Kamiya, who will serve once again as the game's director. Known for his work on the first few Resident Evil games and for creating some of Capcom's most-iconic series--series such as Devil May Cry, Bayonetta, and Okami--Kamiya is an incredibly prominent figure in the gaming industry. Late last year, he announced his departure from long-time studio Platinum Games, stating he needed to follow his "beliefs as a game creator." It now seems as though this might have been to reunite with Capcom for the Okami sequel.

Based on the Japanese legend of Amaterasu, Okami follows the sun goddess as she takes on the form of a wolf in order to save Japan from encroaching darkness. Back in 2006, GameSpot called Okami a "game so well crafted from top to bottom that it's bound to impress just about anyone who gives it a chance" in our review.

Yet Okami 2 was not the only major reveal at The Game Awards 2024. We also got a look at The Last of Us studio's next game, Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet, and CD Projekt Red's The Witcher 4. Be sure to check out our coverage of all of The Game Awards' biggest announcements, as well as which studios were the night's big winners.

Capcom is really becoming my new favorite. Maybe they'll replace Sony in my heart. Let's see how this and onimusha does.

If it becomes a Soulslike... I'm out (at least, until a guide is inevitably posted for it), but if it remains the blissful, beautiful combination of toned down Devil May Cry-style hack-and-slashing mixed with its 3D TLoZ origins and maybe a few new mechanics, I'm in. Might even be worth pre-ordering (fat lotta good that does me without the ability to stand and talk to other fans in line while awaiting midnight at...GameStop).

My hopes are high, but I don't want the hype to overstay its welcome once the game releases. I just don't wanna support a studio forcing RDR2 levels of dev-crunching. Hideki being director is EXTREMEly good news, however.

I still want more reasons to revisit Nippon, but I've exhausted all the other versions of Okami. Hell, might break out the ol' eBay and find a loose copy of Okamiden in the meantime, while this sits and hopefully doesn't go through development hell while fans inevitably break the needed tension with mass leaks everywhere -_- Oh well. Only so much I can do and play out of my Zoom-er backlog as we all twiddle our thumbs, mice and/or joysticks in preparation for the coming of the sun goddess's return to feudal suburbia.

Let's just reveal Dark Cloud 3 next and I can die happy even if I never find the time to ever play either game.
