Okami pounces onto DS in Japan

Famitsu reveals first details on portable installment of Clover Studios' swan song, due in island nation next year; all-new adventure, stylus controls.

Though it initially appeared on the PlayStation 2 in 2006, Clover Studios' swan song Okami is a game that was seemingly built for Nintendo's platforms. As the white wolf Amaterasu, players trigger magical abilities by painting symbols onscreen, a motion that easily lends itself to the Wii's motion-sensing remote or the DS's touch-screen stylus.

Famitsu's first look at Okamiden.
Famitsu's first look at Okamiden.

The first transition to Nintendo's platform occurred in April 2008, when Capcom and Ready at Dawn teamed on the highly regarded Wii edition of the game. Following on from a Japanese Patent Office filing last week, Famitsu now has the first details on the DS version of the game, titled Okamiden: Chisaki Taiyou. (A scan of the magazine was obtained by WiiEveryday and translated by GameSpot.)

According to Famitsu, Okamiden will be an all-new adventure in the Okami universe, though it will be set in the same areas as the PS2 and Wii editions. Further, the game will follow a new, younger character several months after the events of the original. Gameplay will be similar to previous versions, and players will use the DS's stylus to draw the franchise's hallmark magical symbols.

Famitsu notes that Okamiden: Chiisaki Taiyou is due in Japan in 2010, though it did not indicate when, or if, the game would see a worldwide release. Capcom's North American arm had not responded to requests for comment as of press time. According to the magazine, a playable version of the game will be on hand at the Tokyo Game Show, which runs September 24-27.

So excited to use the stylus!! I loved Okami on the Wii, but sometimes using the motion controls to draw the symbols was aggravating. I can't wait... I just can't wait!! By far the most original series I've ever played.

Okami at the end definitely revealed that the series was continuing and I am glad that it is. I am glad that the series was not canned by Capcom. I think this will be a great sequel, like MGS2: Sons of Liberty, that will segway into MGS4 as of terms of plot development. I am really looking forward to this title and definitely plan on getting both the Japanese and American versions. Everybody better start learning Japanese now. ;) It's great to have another game/story with a wolf as the protagonist in an age in real-life, where wolves are in danger once again in the United States. And around the world.

This is the smartest move they have done, Okami was in development after the DS release and considering all they had in mind was Zelda with a gimmick why they didnt switch to that in the first place is mind boggling.

I would have cried Ninja Gaiden Sigma Syndrome on this if it was another remake. Thankfully, it's different. Also note that most gaming intellectuals claim a second remake is one too many, i.e. Far Cry 1.

Hopefully this does well enough for a console version to be made. But, the ds version doesn't look that much different from the ps2/wii versions. I heard capcom say, okami 2 would have to wait for okami 1 to sell better. This might be it!!!!!

Also, I really hope this gets to the states. They probably would, since it's a sequel, and I haven't played the 1st yet, because of the Wii reviews complaining about the brush controls, but if this gets to the US, I would so buy both. On the same day.

The graphics look amazing for a ds. This would have never been possible if they have stuck with the "realistic" graphics that they showed when the PS2 game was first announced.

that guy on your back better not be on your back for the whole game, that would be stupid. I didn't want to buy a ds because nintendo is the bane of my existance, but now I want a ds for this game. I'll have to bite the bullet!

It looks fantastic on the DS and it really does lend itself to the use of the stylus. I will be anxiously awaiting this one.

It would take this to come out on ds to pry me away from kingdom hearts when it comes out heres hoping I have Dissidia completed by then. Rolling with a ds in one pocket and the psp in the other. life is good.

This is outstanding news for fans of the series, they might not like the fact that it's coming to the DS, but at least they're working on a sequel, thus giving us hope for another game on one of the home consoles.

I don't think DS is a good choice personally. Some of the things I remember Okami for are it's Sounds and Graphics, which WILL take a hit for sure. But I'll buy it anyway. It's Freaking Okami, and the world is unclean for letting both the PS2 and Wii Version Bomb.

OK if you have a PlayStation 2 or a wii don't be stupid by the game. But if you cant play a game with what it says on the back then don't get it. But it is cheap and i cant wait for the ds one.
