Capcom has announced the third game in the Onimusha series, Onimusha 3, which takes place in two different places and in two different time periods--1582 Japan (Honnoji Temple) and 2004 France (Paris). The main character from Japan is Akechi Samanosuke, the samurai from the original Onimusha who set forth to fight a battle against the evil Nobunaga. The main character from France is Jacque Blan, a gun-shooting military soldier who finds himself fighting against Genma demons in the middle of modern-day Paris. Samanosuke and Jacque interact and will not be restrained to their own time periods, although it is not clear how they move through time. Samanosuke is still modeled after Asian actor Takeshi Kaneshiro, while the new hero Jacque is modeled after French actor Jean Reno (The Professional, La Femme Nikita, Ronin).

As a first for the series, Onimusha 3 will be featured in full 3D. Most of the production staff is identical to the previous in the series, with Keiji Inafune as producer and Flagship handling the script. However, the CG movie direction will be lead by Takashi Yamazaki (Juvenile, Returner) and Donnie Yen, best known as the fight choreographer for the movie Blade 2.

Onimusha 3 is scheduled for release on the PlayStation 2 in Japan in March 2004.
