Online Freeroam Mode Coming For Free To Need For Speed Payback

Take to the open roads with friends for a casual drive.

Despite featuring an open-world environment, Need for Speed Payback doesn't offer a multiplayer freeroam mode, much to the disappointment of fans. That will change sometime this year, as EA and developer Ghost Games have announced plans to add such a mode in a forthcoming update.

The official Need for Speed Twitter account confirmed the news, though it shared virtually no details. Online Freeroam mode will be released at some point in 2018--no specific date has been announced, as it remains in development. Once it's ready, it'll be available for free to all players on PC, PS4, and Xbox One.

Now Playing: Need for Speed Payback - Open World Guide

Beyond that, we don't know what to expect or how soon it might arrive. As it stands, there is no freeroam support in multiplayer outside of a waiting room lobby feature, which players have used as a substitute in place of a proper option.

After the series took a year off in 2016, Payback was released in November. It focused on a more action-oriented, Fast and Furious-inspired style of gameplay and narrative. In our Need for Speed Payback review, critic Richard Wakeling laid out many of the game's issues, though the open world itself was called out as a highlight--making the absence of a freeroam mode a disappointing omission.

@playstationzone: They don't. Gives you in-game credits, accessories and tokens/cards for upgrades for FREE after every level up and completed activities (I'm fairly certain).

With Payback they managed to make a step backwards from 2015. StepBack would be more correct name for this game. I coudn't even finish "story".

@g4m1ngon: I've rented it recently and I totally agree.

Whomever is in charge of NFS these days surely doesn't give a crap about believability and clearly designs games that holds player's hands. I hate that.

They need to remove all of the barriers and make the game truly open world. Don't just cater to the multiplayer.

A few adjustments and Payback would have been--would be--pretty decent. It's fun, but its also annoying in a lot of areas.

And, please for the love of god, get rid of NOS entirely.

@lonesamurai1: Need For Speed right now is a wandering ghost in EA's mansion. Once this mansion floats, everything in it will finally reach peace, all it matters now the event time being.

@lonesamurai1: People buy EA games because there is no other choice in a lot of cases. The only EA game that I buy is NHL and I don't buy it yearly i just buy one per console generation. No one else is doing hockey games, if you want one it has to be EA.

*edit: EA also has exclusive rights to make star wars games so it you are a fan you also have no choice on who you buy from though I personally haven't bought a single EA star wars game

@lonesamurai1: Really, if ppl don't like a company and their games are crap, how hard is it to not buy their games? This addictive consumerism is slowing poisoning everything good in our culture. "I don't have a choice"??? Isn't there an article on gaming addiction somewhere nearby? People need to get grip on reality.
