Orcs Must Die! Unchained will be a PC-exclusive free-to-play “Fortress Siege” multiplayer game when it’s released in late 2014, developer Robot Entertainment has announced.

Orcs Must Die! and Orcs Must Die! 2 offered a more action-oriented spin on the tower defense genre, asking you to defend your castle against hordes of orcs by setting traps and fighting them yourself from a third-person perspective.

“After the first game, fans told us they wanted cooperative gameplay, and we were thrilled to deliver it in Orcs Must Die! 2,” Robot Entertainment CEO Patrick Hudson said. “After the sequel, we heard the cry for competitive gameplay. Orcs Must Die! Unchained is an answer to that and much more. It’s a realization of Robot’s ambition for what the franchise could ultimately become.”

Orcs Must Die! Unchained keeps the basic mechanics, but structures them around a head-to-head multiplayer game where one team defends a fortress, and the other attacks it. Players will be able to choose between dozens of unique heroes, including War Mage and Sorceress from the previous games, and new heroes like Blackpaw, Midnight, Stinkeye, and Bloodspike. As you play, you’ll add more heroes, weapons, traps, and minions to your arsenal.

While Orcs Must Die! Unchained will be free-to-play when it’s released, you can start playing the Alpha instantly if you buy The Master Founder’s Pack for $150. It will also get you five heroes to play with, 200 in-game gold, one Alpha code to give to a friend, five unlock codes for the previous Orcs Must Die! games, access to the developer forum, and more. The $60 War Mage Founder’s Pack will put you at the front of the line for Alpha testing, and the $20 Apprentice Founder’s Pack will get you priority access to the closed Beta.

You can find the full list of rewards for each Founder’s Pack on the game’s official website. If you’re at PAX East, you can also check out a playable version of Orcs Must Die! Unchained at booth 1124.

I love all the "Free to play or pay to play now" comments. It's obvious none of them saw the page where it says they give you roughly three times the amount paid worth of stuff in the game, including stuff you can't get after the game is released.

But that's none of my business.

Wait to play finished, polished game FOR FREE, or pay $150 to play a broken pre-alpha mess RIGHT NOW?

Ooh, that's a tough one. :P

For $150, I could get the last few parts I need to get two pc's up and running.

this trend of paying for unfinished games is getting out of hand. I bought Godus on a steam sale and I still regret it to this day.

@hystavito @yosus Why be concerned about it, if some moron wants to pay $150 for an incomplete mess of a game. And I get to play the full finished game for free as a result, thats a win in my book.

Pay to alpha test a game? LOL!! Pass. Let me know when it's completed, FREE and ready to be downloaded. I have the first game, but I'm not shelling out any money for this until it's 100% done.

Its a pretty fun game tbh, even this early in development. The $150 is worth it if you are someone who believes the developer should be supported. Plus you get more than just early access

Really disappointing i loved the first 2 some of my favorite tower defense games. One of the hardest as well but i think plants vs zombies has taught us that f2p and tower defense dont mix at all. So im gonna be skipping this.

@nurnberg Shhhh, they call it "early access". In short they buy a portion of a game with no promise of it ever living up to expectations and they seem fine with it. idk

@waffleiron88 @nurnberg Actually it's supporting the devs. What you are describing is kickstarter and that is the whole reason behind it, to hopefully bring games to light that otherwise would rot in the shadows.

This is so gross. I was on the fence on about getting this, but this just pushed me over. I will never support this Alpha shit. What a scam.

@drysprocket This is basically like donating to a project via Kickstarter, and it makes all of that information very clear from the start. Scams generally don't give you all the information - that's what makes them scams.

@Lhomity @drysprocket i understend you defending this, i loved orcs must die 1 & 2, but a 150€ price tag is just not something you can justify

@demondogx @Lhomity @drysprocket I don't think it needs justifying anyway. Because the alpha doesn't interest me, personally. Am more than happy to just wait for the final release.

If some people are willing to fund them for the $150 package, and it helps the devs to improve the game, then it's a good thing for people like you and me who would rather play the game when it's done and released.

Nothing but a blatant cash grab. Another developer succumbs to greed.

@tethar So everything on kickstarter or indiegogo is a blatant cash grab, and an act of greed?

I like the previous games, but asking $150 when they're making a leap into multiplayer vs.. its too much. $150 is clearly more money then the game + .... i dunno.. 10 dlcs.

Really interesting. I love Orcs Must Die 1 and 2, and also enjoy some free to play team-competitive multiplayer games, like LoL and Team Fortress 2, so this may be quite good. Let's wait and see.

@nl_skipper Yeah, as many shitty things EA have done, even they didn't charge for the multiplayer beta of Crysis back in the day.

Now days companies want you to pay $30 for a demo, or $30+ for a fucking pre alpha. It's disgusting.

It's not really a new trend, developers just take thing farther than what was the norm until now.

You pay more to play earlier.

It's like that for every games, buy the games on day one pay 60$ or wait for a while and get the games at more then 50% off.

No its not. Arma 3 had cheaper beta than release version. Some devs are trying to capitalize on people that want to play early thats all.
