Ouya CEO "pissed" about delayed shipments

Julie Uhrman apologizes to backers for shipping issues; consoles now expected in 15-17 days.

Ouya founder and CEO Julie Uhrman is "pissed" about delayed Ouya shipments, she said in an update to the console's Kickstarter page today (via GamesIndustry International).

No Caption Provided

"I am pissed," she said. "Some of you have not yet received your Ouya, and to you, I apologize. I did not promise to ship to most of you before we hit store shelves. I promised to ship to all of you. I've been reading your comments, and we are working to solve this."

Uhrman said Ouya shipment issues are the fault of the company's distribution partners. She said units were delivered in May, but some still have not been shipped.

"We paid for shipping, yet the deliveries remain incomplete. We know everyone is getting their Ouya, but it is taking longer than we expected," she said.

Ouya head of operations Ken Stephens said those who ordered a system can expect their console to arrive in 15-17 days once shipped from Hong Kong.

"Over the past few months, we encountered and conquered many challenges spanning both hardware and software in order to bring the best product we could to market," Stephens said. "We have tried to make sure that the challenges we faced did not impact our early supporters, but unfortunately we came up short."

The $99 Android-powered Ouya launched today in the United States and internationally. The console is currently sold out at Amazon.

@Clownbabby @bunchanumbers bleem was completely different as it contained the bios of the console, emulators remain legal by not providing the bios. it is up to each individual what they do, using their own morality values

@Clownbabby but its an avenue. If you own the cartridges you can legally use a rom. Emulators are legal too.

@bunchanumbers @Clownbabby Nintendo says different.

https://www.nintendo.com/corp/legal.jsp#emulator

There is a good deal of misinformation on the Internet regarding the backup/archival copy exception. It is not a "second copy" rule and is often mistakenly cited for the proposition that if you have one lawful copy of a copyrighted work, you are entitled to have a second copy of the copyrighted work even if that second copy is an infringing copy. The backup/archival copy exception is a very narrow limitation relating to a copy being made by the rightful owner of an authentic game to ensure he or she has one in the event of damage or destruction of the authentic. Therefore, whether you have an authentic game or not, or whether you have possession of a Nintendo ROM for a limited amount of time, i.e. 24 hours, it is illegal to download and play a Nintendo ROM from the Internet.

That is actually different in different countries. Nintendo don't make laws.

Further more the EULAs of yesteryear weren't as comprehensive as they are these days.

Can't retroactively change that.

Either way the emulators themselves aren't illegal unless they contain copyrighted code from whatever they're emulating. They usually don't.

I'm really shocked that Ouya is going to retail when their customer service is so bad. Overnight they amazingly resolved "thousands" of issues by simply sending a generic e-mail message and then closing all the trouble tickets. Issues resolved. Great customer service strategy Ouya!

WTF?! That's how they treat their so called valued customers.

If you're considering buying one - Don't!

The major retailers will soon find out how bad their customer service is and stop carrying the stock. Ouya won't last past December when the new consoles are released.

@Ngentot25

It's not competing with xbox one and ps4.

It's competing with raspberry pi and cheap media players.

The games bit just makes it way more attractive.

In a way it's it's own market segment because it's fairly unique with its pricepoint and features.

Next best thing would be a mini itx PC

That would be more expensive, bigger and have problems with the interface and controller setup. It would also be x86 based and not run android apps natively.

And you'd pretty much have to buy it in parts and build it yourself.

Now I would prefer that setup but the price is too high for me.

I never said Open Source automatically means good.

What it does mean is it always has the potential to be good. The whole philosophy of Open Source is, "if it isn't broken, break it, then use the parts to make something more awesome"

Because I like to play alot of classic games on my television screen, split-screen with friends. And the Ouya is portable and easy to get to any friend's apartment, and it's nice and cheap.

This just goes to show that companies need to stop putting faith in their distribution partners to actually do their jobs properly and on time. Delivery to distribution warehouses in MAY and still sitting there? That's pathetic, and hopefully these distributors go out of business for crap like that.

Don't make promises that hinge on the efficiency and capabilities of other companies.

I have an Ouya.

Works very well with all games I've tested so far.

Sliiiiiight frame-rate drops in Majora's Mask, but I stress they are small.

@Clownbabby @Pre_ordered_PS4 Yes I know you can but would be nice to get a Ouya and link it up to my 60 inch TV, with controller in hand (even though it is fooking ugly!)

@Clownbabby @Pre_ordered_PS4 They are not horrid for what i want it for. I don't need it to be a 360 or ps3. I already have those. I just want a cheap option for emulators and fun indie games like towerfall

@Clownbabby @Pre_ordered_PS4 again, I appreciate I could do that but my PC is in the spare room and it would be a right pain in the arse moving it all about

I'm considering an Ouya because it sounds convenient for playing roms and its dirt cheap at £99

@Clownbabby @bunchanumbers @Dezuria @Pre_ordered_PS4 convenience. I could convince a friend to plug in a ouya if they have little technical experience. I would have trouble getting a tech beginner to set up a laptop for emulators.

@Dezuria @Pre_ordered_PS4 @Clownbabby and its convient. It can do most of the stuff that consoles today can do (netflix, games, market etc.) and it runs emus so you can get tons of games. Its just not a graphical powerhouse.

@Pre_ordered_PS4 @Clownbabby I use a wireless 360 controller and a 25ft HDMI cable to do this. :) Ouya does seem like a nice option for emulation if you can't run a cable from your PC though.

Can anyone enlighten me to how roms and emulators work on the Ouya. I'm interested in getting one so can play some classic NES, N64 & PS1 games.

Do you have to pay for each rom or is it a sort of illegal process? (downloaded via torrents)

You can get the emulators free on the Ouya store. ROMS, however, you need to download on your computer and transfer to the ouya, just use a USB stick or a dropbox app, and you're good to go.

I'm using Mupen64 and SuperGNES. You can download them directly from the Ouya. Mupen64 is for N64, and SuperGNES is for SNES. Haven't tried out the others yet.

Looking at the comments is just depressing.

We finally get an Open Source console, the a huge win for the Open Source movement, at the same time we are fighting tooth and nail against intrusive DRM in other consoles such as the Xbox, and poor third party support in the Wii U, driven by their restrictive dev kit licensing.

Then a console comes out, open source, free SDK: and how does the game community that complained so much respond to it?

"KILL IT WITH FIRE!"

Well, here's to a future driven by DRM and 1000 dollar dev kits with 100 page license agreements. Cheers everyone.

It doesn't matter that it's open source. The people making this thing have really shit the bed, and it should be criticized harshly whether it's open source or not.

I'd love to see the Ouya succeed if for no other reason then I'm all for more options for gamers of all income statuses and interests, but if a company fucks up, they **** up, and they need to be called out on that. That's all there is to it.

@liandrikonflict @Lambchopzin Way to deflect my argument. Also, MS hasn't failed to ship units to paying customers weeks after promising to do so. They certainly screwed up with the 360 by shipping broken hardware (Red Ring of Death).

I am by no means an MS fan, in fact I'm a PC gamer, but deflecting criticism of the Ouya by claiming MS is worse is asinine.

@Clownbabby Developers are abandoning AAA games and jumping ship to mobile.

If only it occurred to them to simply just adjust their game budgets.

While I am not a fan of what i've seen of the Ouya, I do genuinely hope the thing performs well enough to warrant new models of it in the future. While I think its a mess in its current state, an Android console is a very good idea and can be pretty handy if they improve it.
