Ouya CEO "pissed" about delayed shipments

Julie Uhrman apologizes to backers for shipping issues; consoles now expected in 15-17 days.

Ouya founder and CEO Julie Uhrman is "pissed" about delayed Ouya shipments, she said in an update to the console's Kickstarter page today (via GamesIndustry International).

No Caption Provided

"I am pissed," she said. "Some of you have not yet received your Ouya, and to you, I apologize. I did not promise to ship to most of you before we hit store shelves. I promised to ship to all of you. I've been reading your comments, and we are working to solve this."

Uhrman said Ouya shipment issues are the fault of the company's distribution partners. She said units were delivered in May, but some still have not been shipped.

"We paid for shipping, yet the deliveries remain incomplete. We know everyone is getting their Ouya, but it is taking longer than we expected," she said.

Ouya head of operations Ken Stephens said those who ordered a system can expect their console to arrive in 15-17 days once shipped from Hong Kong.

"Over the past few months, we encountered and conquered many challenges spanning both hardware and software in order to bring the best product we could to market," Stephens said. "We have tried to make sure that the challenges we faced did not impact our early supporters, but unfortunately we came up short."

The $99 Android-powered Ouya launched today in the United States and internationally. The console is currently sold out at Amazon.

They sell the motherboard that is inside the OUYA in Korea and other asian countries for like 45-50 bucks or something like that to consumers ready to use out of the box. With the discount they are getting for buying bulk, I would say they are making a good amount of profit on this console after full production. With the 50 dollar charge on the controller, which I am seeing a high profit marging on this as well, this is a manufacturing dream. With that said, I believe the OUYA is a piece of trash. That's just my opinion. I don't believe it is worth the hype and people just bought an old hardware version of a tablet all-in-one mobo to play Google Play apps. I get the same and better quality games on my Samsung Note 2, and you can achieve this with most smart Android phones out already. They even have a nice android based controller that sells for about 20-40 bucks you can hook up and most Android phones and tablets can output HDMI for a better price and value. People just bought into the marketing when these features were out for a long time. They were just able to capitalize on it before the masses knew the real potential of an Android device.

@fiendless7 It plays android games from the google play store. So basically tablet/smart phone games on your TV with a controller.

@fiendless7 Also HD video playback and emulators for SNES etc. play fine on it (from what I've read). So honestly it's not really that bad for 99 bucks. If you don't own a tablet or in a low income house that can't afford a bad ass PC or a console this has a quite a bit of value.

He isn't pissed. He has his money.

And jesus Christ that thing is a hunk of shit. I got one and all I could think is "I paid 100 bucks for this shit? I could use an hdmi out on my android phone and hook up my moga controller and play the same damn games on my tv"

Its slow, the controller feels like shit and a waste of money. Luckily where I bought it I can get my money back.

@Gargus lol The name "Julie" is literally the fifth word in the article, and you're all, "HE isn't pissed. HE has his money."

Maybe actually read the articles before you comment, so your opinion, you know, matters in any way to anyone. Even yourself.

@FrankFoxYaeger Not for a 100 bucks it can't and it's not trying to beat or even compete with PC, since, you know, it plays nothing the PC does. It's a cheap console that is also, from what I have read, a really solid HTPC that can play 1080p video playback smoothly. If you aren't a hardcore gamer and just looking for some casual gaming and video playback this is pretty hard to beat. Not to mention apparently is plays emulators smoothly as well, so again for 100 bucks there is lots of value here.

Well how about this for a change, since you received a lot of funding from the USA, why not make the %@*%$(* thing in the USA and oh I don't know give jobs to people in America.

No that would make sense.

@jtmellon Yeah true. The problem is these U.S. companies don't want to spend the big bucks for U.S. labor. They want to manufacture overseas where it's cheaper so their company can make a larger profit. The problem is those same Asian markets who are manufacturing the products. AREN'T BUYING US PRODUCTS. It the Americans who usually by these products and if they don't have high paying jobs to do so. These big businesses still lose money. It's really a catch 22. It would make sense if the Asian manufacturers who made the U.S. product, were all selling them into the Asian market for U.S. to make millions, but they really aren't.

@jtmellon If the console was made in the US it would probably cost more than 100$. But from what I heard General Motors are on the rise again, so maybe that willl bring jobs to US.

@Maverisk @jtmellon I agree, my point is, you make an item in Asia, then you bitch that it's not shipping on time. And who would by a GM car anyway? Maybe someone's grandfather.

"muricans" would be a GM car also.

Me personally, Im a Toyota man. Every one I ever owned lasted a decade with just general maintenance and occasional brake and serpentine belt replacement.

@Maverisk @jtmellon jtmellon has a point. Although it would cost more if made in the US, the bottom line is this: if you provide better paying JOBS to US citizens, then they have more money in their pockets to spend...and could therefore afford to buy more expensive stuff. Henry Ford was famous in his day for telling Wall Street investors to go **** themselves when they complained he payed his workers too much...he said, "I want to pay my workers enough money so that they can afford to BUY the products we produce right here."

So, I guess we can have a "race for the bottom" by paying workers less at service sector jobs like Wal-Mart and McDonalds and hoping that the prices of products and food/shelter stay low enough for them to afford to survive...or we can strive for something better and provide living wage jobs here so that more people can afford to live above the poverty line.

@jtmellon @mjswooosh @Maverisk True. That was a decent salary. You're right though. Companies really need to keep more jobs in the U.S. Both my wife and I would for Top 10 U.S. companies and we've already had 100's and 100's of jobs shipped to Asia, India and South America markets. Most U.S. citizens hate dealing with these other markets on the phone.

@mjswooosh @Maverisk @jtmellon Well said MJS. Well said.

Before I was laid off I had an ok job, not a great job but an ok job, I was making 2400 a month after taxes, now I know that's not a lot to some people but for me a guy with no college it paid my bills and gave me extra to buy what I wanted. Then boom now I am making next to nothing and it all goes for food and housing. So no new ouya for me, no new Sony PS4 for me and no new Xbox (not that I was going to buy one anyway). But if you make things here in the USA and pay people a good wage, people will buy it if its 125 or 150.

After giving it a little thought, I could care less about gaming on this thing ("F2P" games that nickel-and-dime the shit out of you to reach the next level? Um, no)...BUT...I am curious if this thing will play 1080P / 720P video smoothly, what file types it will play (.mkv, avi, mp4, etc...), and what sort of local/expandable storage it offers....

EDIT: I found this Amazon review which addresses my needs/curiosity perfectly...

"...XBMC works really well at streaming 1080p files from my Windows SMB PC, and it also plays local 1080p files from a 2TB portable hard drive formatted in NTFS (it played back everything I threw at it). That alone has made my Ouya so worthwhile since it has now replaced my Raspberry Pi XBMC gadget because it runs faster and is much easier to work with!"

SOLD. :)

The same reviewer went on:

"I was also able to install Sega Genesis, SNES, NeoGeo, N64, and PSX emulators onto my Ouya while reading the game files from that same portable hard drive. Everything works extremely well."

Now, THAT'S the kind of gaming I could get with if the Ouya pulls it off well...I may have to consider picking one up soon...not sure if I want to wait until version 2 given how well it seems to work as a miniature HTPC....

@mjswooosh it'll do retro games and streaming/playing movies in 1080p. Its really hard to argue with those points alone. Its a good value for what you pay. I've paid 100$ for far worse.

@abhisheknerdy20 it's a game console streaming media device that went through kickstarter for funding. The system is android based and will have a new upgraded version once a year. Best of all they have a lot of developers making games for it I suspect 60% to be casual shovelware but for $99 it's worth the risk to buy and hope for 20% to be fun to play. It also emulates older game systems if you are into retro gaming like me that is a good thing.

@benelori I'm not being a smart-ass when I ask this: can you please explain the potential of this console to me? I follow the industry pretty closely, but I must admit I don't know much about this thing and am curious to know more. At first glance I don't see a reason to bother purchasing one, but perhaps someone could convince me otherwise....

@BamaGoatt Thanks for the response. I ended up hunting down some reviews on Amazon to do a little prelim research...posted my findings at the top of this thread...it only took reading thru a few reviews to discover this thing would be absolutely *perfect* as a mini HTPC media/movie player. I doubt I'll bother gaming on it much if I pick one up, but the ability to perfectly play movies via XBMC with such a small form-factor is awesome. :) The only thing I need to verify is what file types/containers it will play out of box...assuming it will basically play anything you can throw at it if it uses XBMC...

@mjswooosh @benelori basically it is a console made by gamers for gamers with some streaming and emulators. So it's not a pc or a pc replacement. But unlike the ps4 Xbox one and Wii u ouya will be upgradeable once a year. I don't use on live but this is supposed to support the service if you do or have the internet to support it. It also allows you to make your own games if you have a pc. Also something about every game must be free to use chances are every game will have a demo or a time limit trial. Which means if you don't like a game don't buy it. The only negative to me is the credit card thing but I will just get one from walmart and only add money when I need to.
