Over 1 million concurrent viewers watch $500,000 esports championship

The ESL's grand finals event in Katowice, Poland drew over one million concurrent viewers for Counter-Strike: Global Offensive, League of Legends, and StarCraft 2.

As the above infographic shows, ESL's Intel Extreme Masters in Katowice was not only a success, it showcased the continuing trend of esports growth--not only breaking several of ESL's own viewing records, but also proving to be one of the most viewed professional gaming events of all time. And combining this with concurrent viewers across Asia, over 1 million people tuned in to watch the tournament

The break-neck pace of growth is exemplified by the League of Legends finals between South Korea's KT Rolster Bullets and Europe's Fnatic, setting a new record for the most viewed single match in ESL history with 511,000 concurrent viewers tuning in on Twitch (which does not include Asia), a whopping 69% growth over the previous record set at IEM Cologne just five months ago.

"It was only six or seven years ago that we were happy to see 12,000 concurrent online viewers on a single match," said ESL's Director of Progaming Michal Blicharz. "We had 12,000 watching matches live in the flesh in Katowice and hundreds of thousands online. This growth is simply mind blowing."$508,000 in prize money was given out to competitors including Counter-Strike champions Virtus Pro, League of Legends champions KT Bullets, and StarCraft 2 winner Kim 'sOs' Yoo Jin who took home $100,000 in a winner-takes-all tournament.

This is one of the first actual pieces of evidence that I have seen that CBS Interactive owning twitch can damage a news article on GS.

Notice how they completely breezed over the Twitch competitor stats (I'm assuming Azubu TV)... to the point the article didnt even make sense? When i first started reading I'm like "Where is the 1M Viewers, the twitch infographic says 600k"... then later in the article it explains that 'asia' regions had others.

If you are making an article on esports growth, any objective site would give ALL the information, not create an infographic with only half of the information and write half an article.

EVEN if this is the information as the author downloaded/recieved it, you can still see the author blatently avoiding using any Twitch competitor names. Which isnt consistent with unbiased journalism on 'esports growth'.

I'll admit i dont see it happen often but bias does happen occasionally.

@jeremy- CBSi doesn't own twitch. And this wasn't streamed anywhere else other than twitch. The Asia numbers were on TV.

Anyone else feel like there needs to be a real Arena Shooter also in the esports scene? Quake Live 2.0, Unreal Tournament 2015, Cliff's new game?

<< LINK REMOVED >> I am a biiiig Unreal Tournament fan (except for the crappy UT2003). The first UT was the first game to get me to play on a computer and the game I spent the most time playing (with the first Guild War as a tie).

And I really hope there will be another good arena shooter soon! One that require more skills than just sniping people and hiding. I miss shooters where you could see the projectiles coming your way and dodge them!

But with that said, I don't think I'd watch it as an esport (and yes, I watch SC2 and lots of different games on twitch). It's not as fun to watch something in first person, without seeing the whole thing, like SC or LoL (even though I don't watch it, I can understand why people do).

<< LINK REMOVED >> FPS might be hard to watch if plays keep jumping and running like in quake .. maybe a 3rd person game .. but it has to be made with Esports in mind like league of legends :D ..

<< LINK REMOVED >><< LINK REMOVED >> imo, Counter Strike is infinitely more fun to watch than LoL, Dota, or Starcraft. CS and Dota 2 are 2 of my most played games.
